Greetings, @theanimerealm community…
Today I’m sharing an anime whose second season arrived sooner than I expected; I’m so used to long waits for sequels that this really took me by surprise. Although I had heard rumors that it was confirmed, I hadn't paid much attention to them—so I’m recommending it to you now, ensuring you don’t miss out on the second chapter of a story that has only just begun.
Koori no Jouheki (氷の城壁)
Its Spanish title translates to “Breaking the Ice,” and it premiered in April of this year under the direction of Mankyū; Studio Kai was responsible for bringing this romance, school-life, slice-of-life, and coming-of-age story to the screen. For those unfamiliar with the coming-of-age genre, it focuses on the protagonist's psychological and moral growth, often spanning the transition from youth to adulthood.
As for the plot…
The story follows Koyuki Hikawa, a high school student who keeps others at an impenetrable distance. This stems from past traumas and negative experiences in middle school that led her to build an "ice wall" around herself to avoid getting hurt or drawing attention, preferring instead to remain unnoticed. However, her impenetrable sanctuary is shaken by the arrival of Minato Sotomura—an outgoing, warm, and charismatic classmate who bursts into her personal space without warning or ill intent.
As their worlds collide, they are joined by Miki Hino—Koyuki’s only close friend—and Yota Usui—Minato’s childhood friend. Together, the four form a dynamic group, each grappling with their own insecurities, misunderstandings, and unrequited feelings. Through realistic growth, emotional dilemmas, and complex relationships where no one is quite who they seem, this story immerses you in the struggle of opening one's heart while the fear of getting hurt remains. Will the warmth of those around her finally melt her defenses, or will the fear of falling in love and being vulnerable end up freezing her feelings forever?
Personal opinion
This anime drew me in right from the start because of the themes it promised to explore—especially since so many people have related to the characters—so I decided to give it a chance. On the surface, it may appear to be a teenage romance, but it goes much deeper than that; at its core, it is a psychological drama about personal growth. Among its messages, I appreciated how it addresses the idea that healing requires vulnerability and that building walls to avoid getting hurt also prevents you from being loved. It teaches that empathy and friendship aren't about forcing someone to change, but rather about respecting their pace and offering a safe space for them to choose to step out of their shell.
I enjoyed the animation; it complements the work's introspective atmosphere well, utilizing a color palette that reflects the protagonist's state of mind—shifting from cooler, muted tones when Koyuki isolates herself to warmer hues as the group of four friends solidifies. The animation truly shines in its depiction of micro-subtle facial expressions and body language—such as averted gazes and rigid posture—effectively conveying social anxiety without the need for dialogue. The characters also deserve special mention; starting with Koyuki, she is neither a *tsundere* nor an aggressive *kuudere*. Her aloofness stems from a genuine instinct for self-protection, and her internal monologues are uncomfortably relatable, allowing the viewer to grasp the depth of her insecurity and isolation. As for the group comprising Minato, Miki, and Yota, they do not exist merely to serve as the protagonist's "love interest"; each of the four friends possesses their own unique perspective, identity struggles, fears about the future, and communication issues.
Positive points…
- Realistic portrayal of trauma: Koyuki’s social anxiety and defense mechanisms are written with great maturity and sensitivity, making the character undeniably compelling.
- Balanced main cast: The four group members develop in tandem; there are no irrelevant or clichéd supporting characters.
- Excellent internal monologue: It allows for immediate empathy with the characters' emotional contradictions.
- Organic romance: Trust and friendship are built before the relationship turns romantic, making the interactions feel genuine.
Negative points…
- Slow initial pace: By prioritizing personal introspection over dramatic events, the early episodes may feel leisurely to those seeking a dynamic romance.
- Tension stemming from a lack of communication: While realistic for the teenage years, the characters' recurring hesitation to speak openly can at times be frustrating.
The score I give it…
8.9/10 Story │ 8/10 Animation │ 7.8/10 Sound │ 9/10 Character Design │ 8.7/10 Overall
This anime is truly a highly recommended work if you enjoy slice-of-life stories rich in character development, empathy, and emotional sensitivity.

Koori no Jouheki (氷の城壁)
