Speaking of Halloween—though I don’t really celebrate it much these days, mostly due to my various responsibilities, haha—it’s a time that some might associate with witchcraft or something negative. For me, however, it’s rooted in what I was taught about All Hallows' Eve: a time when people dress up as monsters to scare away evil spirits. It’s also a day for children to have fun, going from house to house in their cute costumes to collect treats—a special, enjoyable day for them. Rather than focusing on anything sinister, it’s really all about the kids having a great time in their costumes and going on their candy hunt.

When I was little—well, at school, they didn’t celebrate it; since it was a Catholic institution, they thought it was akin to witchcraft—and, well, everyone’s opinion is to be respected. But at home—we lived in a rural area—we would dress up in costumes and go from neighbor to neighbor to see what we could get. It was a lot of fun; we’d even compete to see who had the best costume. And although there was always someone who would make an inappropriate remark—especially toward the children—we still had a great time. It was hilarious to see how some kids would even use paper towels to dress up as mummies just to come up with something different; or, if their parents couldn’t afford a costume, they’d get creative so the kids wouldn’t miss out on the fun. Then, after we’d collected all those sweets, it was impossible to get us to sleep—much to the frustration of our parents, who were desperate for us to finally go to bed.

It was always fun, as far back as I can remember. Now that I have a son, I don’t really dress him up much—whether for Carnival or Halloween—since he isn’t particularly interested in costumes. That said, if it meant getting candy, he’d probably be all for it—that would be his motivation! In my view, while this day might hold different meanings for some, for children, it’s really just about dressing up and collecting treats. As for dressing up as monsters—well, I’ve always felt that one’s outward appearance doesn’t necessarily reflect how "monstrous" someone might actually be on the inside; so, wearing a costume doesn’t imply anything bad. It’s a day to pay respects to our departed loved ones and remember them more deeply, while also creating a fun experience for our little ones—a day where you can enjoy yourself and perhaps even pretend to be a witch who’s about to change everything!
