Personalization remains a major trend; children and teenagers love having their own notebooks featuring their favorite characters. That’s the case with my young neighbors—two wonderful girls I adore. After watching the movie Coraline, they became huge fans of everything related to it. They asked me for some very special notebooks, specifically requesting that the pages inside also feature designs.

I also gave my nephew, Diego Alejandro, a notebook featuring Miles Morales’ Spider-Man. I was delighted to spoil them by making these notebooks in a half-letter size. I’d love to share the process with you; while I lack some tools, there are others I do have and make the most of... Welcome!

La Personalización sigue siendo la tendencia, los niños, niñas y adolescentes, desean tener sus propias libretas de sus personajes favoritos. Tal es el caso de mis vecinitas, que son dos niñas geniales que adoro, ellas vieron la película de Coraline y quedaron como Fan oficiales de todo lo relacionado con Coraline, me pidieron unas libretas muy especiales, y que las hojas también tuviesen diseños.

Por otra parte, le regalé a mi sobrino Diego Alejando un libreta con el Spiderman de Miles Morales, y yo complacida con consentirlos les hice sus libretas en tamaño media carta. Te quiero contar sobre el proceso, hay muchas herramientas que no tengo, pero también hay varias que si tengo y las aprovecho al máximo... Bienvenidos.

The notebooks are half-letter size, so I opened a landscape-oriented, letter-sized canvas in Canva.

I laid out the notebook pages with lines and some framing elements. I added personal touches and elements to customize the pages, using two different designs and some transparency effects.

El diseño de las libretas es media carta, entonces abrí en Canva un lienzo en tamaño carta y horizontal.

Diagramé las dos hojas de las libretas con líneas y algunos elementos para enmarcar. Coloqué algunos personales y elementos para personalizar las hojas, con dos diseños diferentes y algunas transparencias.

For the cover, I chose a design that I adjusted to half-letter size, and I took advantage of the empty spaces on the canvas to place a few bookmarks and another decorative element that I’ll use in a few days.

But you should always—always, always—make the most of the empty spaces that remain as you design.

Para la Portada elegí un diseño que ajusté al tamaño de media carta, y aproveché los espacios libre en el lienzo, para colocar algunos marcapáginas y otro elemento decorativo, que usaré en algunos días.

Pero siempre, siempre, siempre hay que aprovechar los espacios libres que nos van quedando cuando diseñamos.

I printed 30 sheets to get 60 copies of my design, since two designs fit on each sheet of paper I print. Then, I used a paper cutter for greater precision and speed, though there is always the option of cutting them with scissors or a utility knife.

Imprimí 30 hojas, para conseguir 60 hojas de mi diseño, ya que caben dos hojas diseñadas en cada hoja de papel que imprimo. Luego, corté con la guillotina para más precisión y para hacerlas más rápida, pero siempre está la opción de cortar con tijera, o con cúter.

Once I have cut the front cover, back cover, and pages, I proceed to punch the holes for binding along the top edge, although they could also be placed on the left side.

Una vez que corté Portada, contraportada y las hojas, procedo a perforar los espacios destinados a la encuadernación, en la parte superior, aunque pudiera ser también en el lado izquierdo.

These are the binding coils I use; each strip has 36 loops, but I cut them into groups of three for the design I use on these notebooks. I insert the coils into the punched holes of the covers and pages and close them—either by machine or by hand—because the important thing is finding a way to get the job done, even without the specialized tool.

Estos son los aros de encuadernación que uso, cada tira tiene 36 aros, pero yo corto en grupos de 3 cada uno, para el diseño que hago en estas libretas. Introduzco los aros en las perforaciones de las portadas y hojas, y cierro los aros con máquina o manualmente, lo importante es resolver aunque no tenga la herramienta especializada para hacerlo.

Here is what the bound notebook looks like; I really love the final product, and the personalization turned out great, since Coraline is also one of my favorite movies.

Así luce la libreta ya encuadernada, realmente me gusta mucho el producto final, y la personalización quedó genial, ya que Coraline también es una de mis películas favoritas.

As an extra touch, I created a collage of iconic Coraline elements for the inside of the front and back covers; I think it adds value to the design.

Como detalle extra, realicé un collage de elementos emblemáticos de Coraline, para la parte interna de la portada y contraportada, me parece que es un plus en el diseño.

Here is what the two Coraline notebooks and the Miles Morales Spider-Man one look like; they were all a hit—everyone loved them.

Así lucen las dos libretas de Coraline y la de Spiderman de Miles Morales, todas fueron un éxito, les gustaron muchísimo.

As you can see, I have the tools, but I’m missing the binding machine—which is actually built into another machine I dream of buying someday. Still, the important thing is not to let anything stop or limit you; you have to keep moving forward, creating, and being happy.
