In 2026, Ru and I decided to celebrate our birthdays outside of Lima. Coincidentally, my birthday fell during our trip to Argentina and Uruguay—not because we planned it that way, but purely by chance 😂.
So in June, to make the most of the many vacation days we’d accumulated from work, we decided to visit Oxapampa.
The most comfortable way to get there if you’re not driving is to take the buses with reclining seats—we traveled on Movilbus—because the trip is almost 12 hours on the road, so you can get some sleep.
Luckily, our lodging was free because my brother, my sister-in-law, and my little niece were waiting for us there.
We spent five days at their apartment, during which we were able to visit a few places and enjoy some delicious food.

We spent five days at their apartment, during which we were able to visit a few places and enjoy some delicious food.
The first place we visited was the butterfly garden, where you can learn a bit about the local flora and fauna.
We chose the second package, which also includes a tour of the area’s suspension bridges; since we arrived at that time of day, we didn’t have time to take the more comprehensive tour.
Each ticket cost 50 soles, which is $14.90 per person.
This 40-minute guided tour includes access to the butterfly garden and a walk across the area’s suspension bridges.

It was a really fun and relaxing outing; honestly, I love being in touch with nature—I’m so happy just looking at trees.
Then we went to the historic district. It’s small—since Oxapampa is a town with few residents—but it has everything you need. Plus, the architecture—something I pay close attention to when I travel—is very distinctive, because many of the buildings are made of wood.
There are descendants of Austrians and people from other European countries living here, so you can see that influence in the architecture and the cuisine.

Another iconic spot we were able to visit is the Manantial de la Virgen. This is another popular tourist attraction with several natural pools where you can take a dip.
That said, the water is very cold, so getting in is quite a challenge—but it’s worth it.
Admission to this site is 20 soles, or $5.90 at the current exchange rate, per person.
There are also areas to relax and buy local and traditional sweets.
It’s best to go early because the weather in this area tends to be a bit chilly, and since it’s surrounded by dense vegetation, you’ll occasionally encounter tiny bugs that bite—and bite hard.
That said, it’s a place where you can also unwind and spend a pleasant time with family or friends.

Oxapampa is another place I’ve added to my list of places to revisit because it offers many outdoor activities, the locals are very friendly, and you can have an incredible time there.

See you in the next post 😉
Hasta el próximo post 😉
