Elite, whenever I hear or read about it, it makes me think about something that is on top of the hierarchy. If I remember right I first heard the word "elite" in the military. In the military, it describes a soldier or a group of soldiers that is head and shoulder on top of the military institution. Think about the famous groups of soldiers such as the Navy Seals, the Green Berets, the 101st Airborne, and the Delta Forces the word elite is synonymous with them.

In school, some are also considered "elite" because of having high academic and social prestige. Think about the members of the "Ivy League" with its famous member schools such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia. Of course, there is also Stanford, Cambridge, and "The University of Tokyo".

So, when it comes to anime, having used the elite word makes me very curious about what it can bring to the table and one particular anime that caught my attention is "Classroom of the Elite".

Episode one introduces a school that was established by the government to nurture the future leaders of Japan named "Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School". At first, each students were treated with extravagance and free to do almost whatever they wanted until the cold truth stung them.

The protagonist, Ayanokoji Kiyotaka, was narrating when a student confronted him because he looked at her inside the bus while they were on their way to the school. At first, I found it quite arrogant how she confronted Ayanokoji Kiyotaka. The student that confronted him turned out to be Horikita Suzune. The confrontation made me think that the school is full of narcissistic students but it didn't stop me to continue watching since the opening narrative made me quite interested in this anime.

I was surprised that the students were surprised when the school gave them "100,000 points" which is equivalent to "100,000 Yen" as their "monthly allowance" which they can spend whenever they want and on whatever they want. The points, as mentioned by a teacher are based on merit. They were given 100,000 each because they have shown immense value just by getting admitted to the school alone.

Okay, so, let me get this straight. Because of the word "elite", I expected that there were no moron students that were admitted to the school. But then as a teacher points out, there are actually moron students in class 1-D and then emphatically said "You're worth nothing, so, you get nothing" when some students questioned that they have not received any points because it is the beginning of the month already.

To be honest I expected that students would slug it with each other because they are all intelligent and will not give an inch of advantage to another student but then it was revealed that they have to compete with themselves for them to get good merit and in turn get points.

I was also surprised that there was a twist in this episode because I was expecting a chaotic environment between students. Instead, what episode one showed is a typical student life inside the classroom/campus (except for sleeping during class of course).
