Hello, internet people. Today I want to talk to you about one of my favourite teen movies, and even though it has plot holes I think it's one of the most well cared for ones. Let's break this movie down without further ado!
Hola, gente de internet. Hoy quiero hablarles de una de mis películas de adolescentes preferidas, y es que aunque tiene agujeros de guion creo que es una de las que está mejor cuidada. ¡Sin más desglosemos esta película!
Let's start with the story: Mack and Brady are a couple of young sweethearts who enjoy the summer together, however, Mack's aunt wants to enroll her in a school far away from the island where she is with her grandfather, as that was the wish of her late mother (as always in Disney) Mack is torn between going and staying and since she hasn't told Brady but Brady found out from Mack's aunt by surprise, they fight and Mack goes surfing to clear his head. Due to a storm, Mack falls off her board and Brady goes for it on a jet ski, however they are both swallowed up by the water and when they surface, they realise they went to another beach.
Empecemos por la historia: Mack y Brady son un par de jóvenes novios que disfrutan el verano juntos, sin embargo, la tía de Mack quiere inscribirla en una escuela lejos de la isla dónde se encuentra con su abuelo, pues ese era el deseo de su mamá ya fallecida (como siempre en Disney) Mack se debate entre ir y quedarse, y dado a que no le ha dicho a Brady sino que este se enteró por la tía de Mack sorpresivamente, ellos discuten y Mack va a surfear para despejarse. Debido a una tormenta, Mack se cae de la tabla y Brady va por ella en una moto de agua, sin embargo a ambos se los traga el agua y cuando salen a la superficie, se dan cuenta de que salieron a otra playa.
It turns out that it is not known how or why, both of them entered the universe of Brady's favourite movie Love Without Sands (a sort of parody of Love Without Barriers). Brady and Mack must figure out how to get back into their universe and, at the same time, help the film's protagonists grow as people and develop their own story.
Resulta que no se sabe como ni porqué, ambos jóvenes entraron al universo de la película favorita de Brady Amor sin Arenas (una especie de parodia de Amor sin Barreras). Brady y Mack deben descubrir como volver a su universo y a la vez, ayudar a los protagonistas de la cinta a crecer como personas y desarrollar su propia historia.
The characters in Love Without Sands are extremely unlikable and that is precisely where the jokes of the whole film lie, how Mack and Brady (who are not supposed to be characters) see them and can't believe the absurd situations that go on around them. Brady is extremely happy to belong to the film and enjoys it while Mack wants to run away at all costs because the situation terrifies and overwhelms her.
Los personajes de Amor sin Arenas son en extremo inverosímiles y precisamente ahí radican los chistes de toda la película, el como Mack y Brady (que se supone no son personajes) los ven y no pueden creer las situaciones absurdas que pasan a su alrededor. Brady está sumamente feliz de pertenecer a la película y lo disfruta mientras que Mack quiere huir a toda costa porque la situación le aterra y la supera.
The real problem comes when, through a series of events, the main characters of the film "fall in love" with Mack and Brady respectively, and the film stalls and even loses continuity because that's not supposed to happen, and in fact it happens during one of my favourite songs in the film:
El verdadero problema viene cuando, por una serie de acontecimientos, los protagonistas de la película "se enamoran" de Mack y Brady respectivamente, y la película se estanca e incluso pierde continuidad porque se supone que eso no debería pasar, y de hecho pasa durante una de mis canciones preferidas de la película:
The absurd situations are the main source of the jokes and the film is actually quite funny, plus there are messages like the typical ones about friendship, ironing out differences and working together. There is also a part in one of the songs where both Brady and Mack try to teach the main characters how to act in a more modern way, but I'll get to that later when I talk about character development.
Las situaciones absurdas son la fuente principal de los chistes y la verdad sí es bastante graciosa la película, además hay mensajes como los típicos sobre la amistad, limar asperezas y trabajar juntos. también hay una parte en una de las canciones dónde tanto Brady como Mack tratan de enseñar a los protagonistas a actuar de manera más actual, pero ese tema lo tocaré más adelante al hablar del desarrollo de personajes.
Lela is my favourite character, she is very gentle and tender, she is always looking to make friends and in fact she integrates Mack into her circle of friends so that she is not alone, she asks her for advice and she admires her a lot for the independence that she has and that she (for logical reasons of the time of her world) lacks. Lela starts out as a girl dependent on the love of her romantic interest, wanting to behave more in line with the ideals of her time (except for the fact that she was a motorbike mechanic), delicate and fragile, however, on meeting Mack and being inspired and advised by her, Lela decides to be happy according to what she wants and not what is expected of her, becoming a more independent girl but retaining her lovable personality.
Lela es mi personaje preferido, es muy gentil y tierna, ella siempre busca hacer amigos y de hecho integra a Mack a su circulo de amigas para que no esté sola, le pide consejos y la admira mucho por la independencia que tiene y que a ella (por cuestiones lógicas de la época de su mundo) le falta. Lela empieza siendo una muchacha dependiente del amor de su interés romántico, queriéndose comportar más apegada a los ideales de su época (salvo por el hecho de que era mecánica de motos) delicada y frágil, sin embargo, al conocer a Mack y ser inspirada y aconsejada por ella, Lela decide ser feliz según lo que ella quiere y no lo que esperan de ella, convirtiéndose en una muchacha más independiente pero conservando su personalidad adorable.
Tanner is a first class flirt, he loves to look good and conquer the ladies, he is quite silly, he is like the typical nice guy, beautiful, but quite silly (taken to the extreme) and that's where the jokes about him come from, however he is very loyal to his friends, brave and capable of doing anything for Lela (his beloved) even if it means confronting Butchy, Lela's bully brother. He has no development whatsoever in my opinion, except for letting Lela be and not hindering her "strange" hobbies and desires. I think that in the second film is where this character has more development.
Tanner es un coqueto de primera, le encanta lucir bien y conquistar a las damas, es bastante tonto, es como el típico chico buena gente, hermoso, pero bastante tonto (llevado al extremo) y de ahí provienen los chistes entorno a él, sin embargo es muy leal con sus amigos, valiente y capaz de hacer lo que sea por Lela (su amada) así se trate de enfrentar a Butchy, el hermano brabucón de Lela. No tiene desarrollo alguno en mi opinión, salvo dejar ser a Lela y no ponerle trabas a sus aficiones y deseos "extraños" creo que en la segunda película es donde más desarrollo tiene este personaje.
Brady is a rather cheerful and carefree boy, he takes things quite lightly and can even pass for irresponsible, although we could also think that Brady acts more in accordance with his age while Mack acts more like an adult. Brady's development is not very noticeable in this film, however, the viewer's empathy and affection is achieved.
Brady es un muchacho bastante alegre y despreocupado, se toma las cosas bastante a la ligera e incluso puede pasar por irresponsable, aunque también podríamos pensar que Brady actúa más acorde a su edad mientras que Mack actúa más como adulta. El desarrollo de Brady no es muy notorio en esta película, sin embargo se logra la empatía y el cariño del espectador.
Mackenzie is a strong, intelligent and independent young girl who, although in many ways is quite mature and almost acts like an adult, is swayed by her aunt's opinion and her mother's wishes. Mack advises Lela about fulfilling her dreams without others getting in the way and it is something that she herself does not follow (and in fact in one part of the film she mentions it) although she believes herself to be independent and mature (which to a large extent she is) Lela unwittingly makes her realise that she (Mackenzie) is living for others and not for herself and therein lies her development.
Mackenzie es un jovencita fuerte, inteligente e independiente que aunque en muchos aspectos es bastante madura y casi actua como adulta, se deja llevar por la opinión de su tía y los deseos de su madre. Mack aconseja a Lela sobre cumplir sus sueños sin que los demás se interpongan, y es algo que ella misma no sigue (y de hecho en una parte de la película lo menciona) aunque ella se cree independiente y madura (que en gran parte lo es) Lela sin quererlo le hace dar cuenta de que ella (Mackenzie) está viviendo para los demás y no para ella misma, y en eso radica su desarrollo.
I thought the performances were quite good (like all the Disney productions I've seen) and because the script is well done, the story well structured and the characters well developed, the actors make us empathise with the characters and enjoy the story.
Las actuaciones me parecieron bastante buenas (como todas las producciones de Disney que he visto) y dado a que el guion está bien hecho, la historia bien estructurada y los personajes bien desarrollados, los actores logran que empaticemos con los personajes y disfrutemos la historia.
I think the best thing about the film is undoubtedly the soundtrack, most of them are songs set in the 50's, the choreographies are magnificent, I love them. What I like the most is that in the CD of the film, the songs are incorporated in their instrumental version and so 'we can analyse the music in more detail, which is an added value to this aspect of the film.
Creo que lo mejor de la película es sin dudas la banda sonora y es que en su mayoría son canciones ambientadas en la época de los 50's, las coreografías son magnificas, me encantan. Lo que más me gusta es que en el CD de la película, están incorporadas las canciones en su versión instrumental y así podemos analizar la música a mayor detalle, lo que supone un valor agregado a este aspecto de la película.
The photography is beautiful, the rising and dynamic shots make the film quite entertaining. What I like the most is the colour palette that works in the part where they are inside "Love without Sands", which is more colourful and warmer than normal, to make reference that this place is "perfect" and they also use a filter that "ages" the environment a little, so that helps with the atmosphere of the film to perfection.
La fotografía es preciosa, los planos ascendentes y dinámicos hacen de la película una bastante entretenida. Lo que más me gusta es la paleta de colores que trabaja la parte donde están dentro de Amor sin Arenas, la cual es más colorida y cálida de lo normal, para hacer referencia de que ese lugar es "perfecto" además usan un filtro que "añeja" un poco el entorno, así que eso ayuda con la ambientación de la película a la perfección.
Without a doubt it's a very enjoyable film, of course it's not among the best I've seen but considering that it's a film for teenagers, it's much better made than many others. Sin dudas es una película bastante disfrutable, claro que no está entre las mejores que he visto pero tomando en cuenta que es una película para adolescentes, está bastante mejor hecha que muchas otras.
