Review and Opinion of the HBO Miniseries The Outsider [ENG-ESP]

Lately, I’ve stopped relying on recommendations from TikTok or Instagram, since I know from past experience that not everything they tout as a “masterpiece” is actually any good. However, I recently came across a post about The Outsider, a 2020 miniseries. Since the recommendation came from a well-known figure in the industry and the premise was perfect for grabbing my attention 100%, I decided to give it a try.

The story begins with an exemplary family man and beloved youth baseball coach who is accused of the brutal murder of an 11-year-old boy. What the detective in charge of the case didn’t take into account is that, in addition to the fingerprints and irrefutable evidence they had against Terry Maitland (played by Jason Bateman), evidence of equal weight would soon surface placing him in another city at the time of the crime.

We’re faced with an inexplicable situation, because logic tells us that no one can be in two places at once. That’s the big mystery that will be investigated over the course of the series’ 10 episodes. The show walks a very fine line that, little by little, shifts from being a police drama to becoming a paranormal investigation—something even the detectives themselves are completely reluctant to believe.

Amid this skepticism, Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo)—a highly unconventional private investigator with unique perceptual abilities—steps in. She’s the one who begins to connect the dots that science and traditional law can’t explain.

The series keeps you glued to the screen by unfolding its mystery in stages. In the first few episodes, what hooks you is the sheer uncertainty of not knowing what’s going on. In the middle episodes, the intrigue revolves around Holly’s discoveries and where her investigation leads us. Finally, the last two episodes focus on the tension of how they’re going to stop this entity. Each stage poses a different question to be solved.

You’d expect nothing less from the storytelling, since it’s based on a Stephen King novel and bears HBO’s hallmark of quality in terms of production, cinematography, and direction. That said, it’s worth noting that this isn’t a nonstop action series. At times, the pace can feel slow, with scenes that seem like filler because, as a viewer, you just want quick answers: to find out what the creature is and how they’re going to destroy it.

As for the ending, I have to say it was a little disconcerting. Those final minutes came to an abrupt end with nearly half the cast gone. Plus, the defeat of the source of all the misfortune happened rather easily; I had imagined a much more elaborate showdown, though it’s fair to admit that the series had already hinted at his physical weaknesses in earlier conversations.

Although the finale may not have been the most impressive or epic, it did provide the answers and resolutions that had been building up. The curious thing is that they left us with a post-credits scene that clearly hinted at a second season—a promise that today, six years after its premiere, still hasn’t materialized. Even so, it’s a suspenseful journey worth taking.

Últimamente he dejado de guiarme por las recomendaciones de TikTok o Instagram, ya que por experiencias anteriores sé que no todo lo que pintan como una "obra maestra" es realmente bueno. Sin embargo, hace poco me topé con un post sobre The Outsider (El Visitante), una miniserie del 2020. Como la recomendación venía de una persona muy reconocida en el medio y la premisa era perfecta para llamar mi atención al 100%, decidí darle una oportunidad.

La historia arranca con un padre de familia ejemplar y querido entrenador de béisbol infantil que es acusado del brutal asesinato de un niño de 11 años. Lo que el detective a cargo del caso no tomó en cuenta es que, además de las huellas y pruebas irrefutables que tenían en contra de Terry Maitland (interpretado por Jason Bateman), pronto aparecerían evidencias del mismo peso que lo ubicaban en otra ciudad al momento del crimen.

Nos encontramos ante una situación inexplicable, porque la lógica nos dice que nadie puede estar en dos sitios a la vez. Esa es la gran incógnita que se va a investigar a lo largo de los 10 capítulos que dura la serie. La producción camina sobre una línea muy fina que, poco a poco, muta de ser un drama policial a convertirse en una investigación paranormal; algo en lo que incluso los mismos detectives se muestran completamente reacios a creer.

En medio de este escepticismo entra en acción Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), una investigadora privada sumamente particular, con habilidades de percepción únicas. Ella es quien empieza a atar los cabos que la ciencia y la ley tradicional no pueden explicar.

La serie te mantiene atento a la pantalla dividiendo su misterio por tramos. En los primeros capítulos, lo que te atrapa es la pura incertidumbre de no saber qué está pasando. En los episodios intermedios, la intriga gira en torno a los descubrimientos de Holly y hacia dónde nos lleva su investigación. Finalmente, los dos últimos capítulos se centran en la tensión de cómo van a detener a esta entidad. Cada etapa plantea una interrogante diferente que resolver.

No se podía esperar menos del desarrollo, ya que está basada en una novela de Stephen King y cuenta con el sello de calidad de HBO en cuanto a producción, fotografía y dirección. Eso sí, hay que advertir que no es una serie de acción constante. Por momentos puede sentirse un ritmo lento, con escenas que parecen de relleno porque uno como espectador solo quiere respuestas rápidas: saber qué es la criatura y cómo la van a destruir.

En cuanto al final, debo decir que fue un poco desconcertante. Esos últimos minutos acaban de forma abrupta con casi la mitad del elenco. Además, la derrota del causante de las desgracias ocurrió de una manera bastante fácil; yo me imaginaba un enfrentamiento mucho más elaborado, aunque es justo admitir que la serie ya nos había adelantado en conversaciones previas cuáles eran sus debilidades físicas.

A pesar de que el cierre tal vez no fue el más impresionante o épico, sí dio las respuestas y los resultados que se venían construyendo. Lo curioso es que nos dejaron una escena post-crédito que insinuaba claramente una segunda temporada, una promesa que hoy, seis años después de su estreno, sigue sin materializarse. Aún así, es un viaje de suspenso que vale la pena recorrer.
