Sobre el tablero de la década de los años cincuenta y sesenta, una reina irrumpe en un conflicto de reyes y castillos, diestra para la victoria y siniestra para todos aquellos que osen poner una mesa de ajedrez frente a ella. Beth Harmon ( Anya Taylor-Joy) es una niña que desde los primeros años de su vida queda huérfana, tragedia que la llevará a un lugar nada deseado pero donde logrará descubrir un gran talento que yace dentro de ella.
Es así como un día llevada por la curiosidad, conoce a un conserje llamado William Shaibel (Bill Camp) un hombre común y corriente que en sus tiempos libres se dedica a jugar ajedrez solo. Beth, desde el primer momento siente una conexión especial por el ajedrez, y en menos de lo que el mismo William lo cree ya una niña de tan solo 8 años se ha convertido en una extraordinaria jugadora, dando así comienzo a una magistral historia marcada por jugadas, estrategias, victorias y derrotas dentro y fuera del tablero.
On the chessboard of the fifties and sixties, a queen bursts into a conflict of kings and castles, dexterous for victory and sinister for all those who dare to put a chess table in front of her. Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) is a girl who from the first years of her life is orphaned, a tragedy that will take her to an unwanted place but where she will discover a great talent that lies within her.
One day, driven by curiosity, she meets a janitor named William Shaibel (Bill Camp), an ordinary man who in his spare time plays chess alone. Beth, from the first moment she feels a special connection for chess, and in less time than William himself believes it, a girl of only 8 years old has become an extraordinary player, thus beginning a masterful story marked by moves, strategies, victories and defeats on and off the board.
Basada en el libro “Gambito de reina” de Walter Tevis (1983) esta película nos muestra la vida de Beth y todo lo que deberá superar si realmente quiere convertirse en la mejor jugadora del planeta. Cabe destacar que incluso para alguien con un talento innato, el camino al éxito no será nada fácil y mucho menos cuando ese factor de seres humanos imperfectos empiece a decir presente en varias etapas esenciales en la vida de Beth.
Son siete capítulos que encierran una gran y maravillosa historia, con una ambientación muy típica de la época y un tema que no deja de percibirse en cada segundo de esta producción: el ajedrez, un deporte mental que por muchos años se ha ganado la admiración y el respeto de mucho, y que gracias a esta serie podremos ver con más de la debida atención y tensión que nos convertirá en verdaderos fanáticos de una de las historias más interesantes que hayas podido conocer en el mundo del ajedrez.
Based on the book "Queen's Gambit" by Walter Tevis (1983) this movie shows us Beth's life and everything she will have to overcome if she really wants to become the best player on the planet. It is worth noting that even for someone with an innate talent, the road to success will not be easy and even less so when that factor of imperfect human beings begins to be present in several essential stages of Beth's life.
There are seven chapters that contain a great and wonderful story, with a very typical setting of the time and a theme that does not fail to be perceived in every second of this production: chess, a mental sport that for many years has earned the admiration and respect of many, and that thanks to this series we can see with more than due attention and tension that will turn us into true fans of one of the most interesting stories you may have known in the world of chess.
“The Queen's Gambit” es una serie que mezcla el drama y la tertulia de un personaje hacia un deporte, un juego en el que llegas a obsesionarte por aquello en lo que cualquier competidor desea alcanzar: ser el mejor de todos. Pienso que el productor logró alcanzar ese equilibrio ideal entre la vida de Beth y el ajedrez, sin caer en desniveles que tornaran aburrido la trama y sin que las escenas perdieran sentido ni importancia, y es que todo parece encajar de manera perfecta como si se tratara de una pieza de ajedrez sobre el tablero.
Todo llega a ser muy relevante desde el primer momento en el que te enlazas en la historia, y al igual que en el ajedrez, vas hilvanado jugada tras jugada que entre triunfos y pérdidas te deja la sensación final de que has disfrutado de una magistral producción. Así como dicen que “las mejores fragancias vienen en frascos pequeños”, la historia de Beth Harmon se compacta de la misma manera para el deleite del espectador.
"The Queen's Gambit" is a series that mixes drama and the talk of a character towards a sport, a game in which you become obsessed with what any competitor wants to achieve: to be the best of all. I think the producer managed to achieve that ideal balance between Beth's life and chess, without falling into unevenness that would make the plot boring and without the scenes losing sense or importance, and everything seems to fit perfectly as if it were a chess piece on the board.
Everything becomes very relevant from the first moment you get involved in the story, and just as in chess, you are threading move after move that between triumphs and losses leaves you with the final feeling that you have enjoyed a masterful production. Just as they say that "the best fragrances come in small bottles", Beth Harmon's story is compacted in the same way to the delight of the viewer.
Y es que durante la trayectoria de esta destacada jugadora, llegarán muchos otros personajes para aportar y dejar su huella en la vida de Beth, un camino que todo ganador desearía obviar, a menos que este lo lleve a alcanzar la cima. Además del señor Shaibel como su mentor, un personaje muy fundamental en la historia de esta chica será Jolene (Moses Ingram) una amiga con quien Beth hará clip desde el orfanato y que hasta el final tendrá una participación muy trascendental en lo que quizás es la parte más importante de la carrera de Beth.
La vida de Beth Harmon develará muchas cosas para una historia que solo dura unos cuantos capítulos, y en donde se destaca una obsesión desenfrenada por el éxito que te puede llevar a un gran vacío cargado de vicios, excesos y depresiones. También veremos una sabia lección de cómo los peores inicios o las peores tragedias de la vida en algún momento llegarán a lastimarte pero nunca a destruirte de modo que no puedas levantarte, y de que si bien las heridas dejan huellas imborrables, estas mismas pueden convertirse en un incentivo que te animen a jamás rendirte.
And during the trajectory of this outstanding player, many other characters will arrive to contribute and leave their mark in Beth's life, a path that every winner would like to avoid, unless it takes him to reach the top. In addition to Mr. Shaibel as her mentor, a very fundamental character in this girl's story will be Jolene (Moses Ingram), a friend with whom Beth will clip since the orphanage and who until the end will have a very transcendental participation in what is perhaps the most important part of Beth's career.
Beth Harmon's life will unveil many things for a story that only lasts a few chapters, and which highlights an unbridled obsession for success that can lead to a great emptiness full of vices, excesses and depressions. We will also see a wise lesson of how the worst beginnings or the worst tragedies of life will at some point hurt you but never destroy you so that you can not get up, and that although the wounds leave indelible marks, they can become an incentive to encourage you to never give up.
Otra de las cosas que nos enseña el personaje de Beth es lo peligroso de ese egoísmo enfermizo en el que cualquier profesional, queriendo ser el número uno de su ocupación, puede guardar y abrigar para su propio daño. La vida puede ser como una montaña rusa en la que al estar arriba nos sentimos invencibles, pero al bajar pensamos que nadie está con nosotros para fortalecernos y apoyarnos.
Me quito el sombrero ante la actuación de Anya Taylor-Joy quien se tomó muy enserio lo del personaje al leerse el libro en algo menos de dos horas, esto como para no perderse ningún detalle del personaje de Beth y plasmarlo con la mayor originalidad posible, algo que sin lugar a dudas queda en evidencia con la calidad de trabajo que demuestra durante toda la mini serie. Hoy, mucho se habla del éxito alcanzado por “The Queen's Gambit” y de los premios alcanzados por esta, pero lo hecho por Anya es digno de un maravilloso reconocimiento.
Así que, si eres fanático del ajedrez vas a amar esta serie, y si no conoces mucho del juego de seguro le darás una oportunidad después de disfrutar de esta excepcional producción, y me atrevo a decir que si crees que el ajedrez es muy aburrido, “The Queen's Gambit” te hará cambiar de opinión. Te recomiendo esta serie con la plena convicción de un victorioso jugador al decir “JAQUE MATE”.
Another thing that Beth's character teaches us is the danger of that unhealthy selfishness in which any professional, wanting to be number one in their occupation, can save and harbor to their own harm. Life can be like a roller coaster where at the top we feel invincible, but on the way down we think no one is with us to strengthen and support us.
Hats off to the performance of Anya Taylor-Joy who took the character very seriously by reading the book in just under two hours, so as not to miss any detail of Beth's character and capture it with the greatest possible originality, something that is undoubtedly evidenced by the quality of work demonstrated throughout the mini-series. Today, there is a lot of talk about the success achieved by "The Queen's Gambit" and the awards it has won, but what Anya has done is worthy of a wonderful recognition.
So, if you are a chess fan you will love this series, and if you don't know much about the game you will surely give it a chance after enjoying this exceptional production, and I dare say that if you think chess is very boring, "The queen's gambit" will change your mind. I recommend this series with the full conviction of a victorious player saying "CHECKMATE".
