One of the most incredible stories you can enjoy in this compilation is 'Jíbaro'. The story focuses on a deaf merchant and his entourage who, during an exchange of goods, are stalked by a mermaid who will try to lure them with her song to eliminate them. In a wooded setting, with a large lagoon in the middle, soon each of the men gradually fall to the mermaid's dance and song. All except one, the deaf gentleman.
This mermaid is presented to us in an unusual way to the legends. She wears a suit of armor adorned entirely with beautiful jewels and accessories, as well as a mask to hide her identity. She comes ashore when the deaf knight picks up from the water a small piece of gold belonging to the mermaid. Immediately the mermaid emerges from the water and begins to perform a dance and sing. Killing (and making them kill each other) men. Noticing that the deaf knight does not succumb to her charms, she is attracted to him and spares his life.
The knight escapes through the forest, not knowing what to do because all his companions are dead. What he doesn't know is that the mermaid is chasing him along the currents of the river (where she belongs). Inevitably they meet and she kisses him wildly. The knight takes advantage of this weakness and decides to hurt her in order to steal all her jewels. The merchant emerges from the water laden with the mermaid's jewels and she falls faintly into the water.
For some reason, as the knight comes down the mountain, he decides to return to the mermaid's pond and as he drinks from the water, he notices that it is dyed red. The mermaid has soaked everything with her blood. The knight is startled when he suddenly begins to hear sounds. He has regained his hearing.
But the story does not end there. The mermaid has reappeared, practically undone and cries for the jewels he has usurped from her and for the betrayal, producing a new song that this time, will be inescapable for the Jíbaro. The knight cannot stop his end and is dragged to the depths of the lagoon where he finally dies.
This story is fascinating for many reasons. This version of the charms of a mermaid (sensual and hypnotic) with a character that is totally impressive in both its aesthetics and its development. The animation is exquisite, the mermaid's movements and the final dance between her and the knight is perfect. The music, which are basically sounds of nature, make you get into the atmosphere.
The director of this episode is Alberto Mielgo, who has produced some other works in Love, Death & Robots, comments that part of the context of this story is that there are no good guys or bad guys. Both the Siren and the Jibaro acted on their own desires and instincts and triggered a tragedy. That which made the Jibaro invincible against the Siren, being deaf, was his strength but unleashing the rain of blood led to his curse. We can almost feel pity for the mermaid, outraged and violated. An exchange of roles between victim and victimizer and how love can become painful, told in a very poetic way.
