An extraordinary ballad that broke several music records in its time-- "Hey Jude" - 1968

Tonight I present a review based on one of The Beatles' most memorable and formidable hits, a song that broke several music records in its time, a song that had a great cultural impact in many countries around the world, practically becoming an icon for them. I am pleased to present to you the song "Hey Jude."

For me, this song has several bars and melodies that make it unique. It's a very long song, lasting more than 7 minutes, and was recorded at the fledgling Apple Records recording studios and credited to Lennon McCartney. Paul stated years later that the lyrics were written to console Julian Lennon, John's son, during his divorce at that time.

This song was recorded between July and August of 1968, and it had a promotional video (which I've included in this review). This video shows the four Beatles being introduced by David Frost. Several shots were taken from his television program, edited together, and released as the video. In it, we can hear an orchestra, or part of one, and about halfway through the video and the performance, the audience from that program joins in on the famous chorus: "Na na na na na ra na na nara na na Hey Jude."

Three facts about this song impressed and caught my attention. The first is that it was certified gold at the time for its high sales, but it was certified platinum almost 30 years later. Wow, only they could achieve such a feat!

The other thing that caught my attention is that a few years ago I learned that the single "Hey Jude," with "Revolution" on the B-side, was released in a sleeve. The sleeve was plain, without any printing or photographs, unlike Capitol Records, which always released singles with printed photos. Instead, Hey Jude opted for a white sleeve, only showing the front of the single with an apple (the Apple logo), and on the B-side, the same apple cut in half. I loved that detail.

And the third thing that struck me as odd and surprising was that they invited the orchestra members to clap and sing the chorus. Everyone agreed, accepting double their pay for that song, except for one, hahaha, who said, "I won't participate in that chorus or clap along to such an annoying and complicated song to play!" Hahaha. How stubborn! He didn't even get to tell his children, grandchildren, or anyone else that he lent his voice to a Beatles song... (What can I say?).

The song featured all four Beatles, part of the orchestra hired by George Martin, and members of the audience. The instruments included violins, violas, cellos, flutes, bassoons, clarinets, double bass, trumpets, and trombones—a true work of art that fused popular music with classical and academic music. I can also tell you that it was the first single over seven minutes long to be played on the radio and reach number one on the Billboard charts. Not only them...
