I recently had the opportunity to watch this film. I was highly curious to determine if it truly lived up to its critical acclaim, as it was widely recognized during the awards season earlier this year. It received four Academy Award nominations, won Best Foreign Language Film at both the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, and secured the Best Director and Best Actor awards at the Cannes Film Festival.
Finalmente me animé a ver esta película Brasileña, El Agente Secreto. Tenia mucha curiosidad por saber si realmente es tan buena como dicen, ya que fue ampliamente galardonada en la temporada de premios a principios de este año. Tuvo cuatro nominaciones al Oscar, ganó en los Globos de Oro y Critics Choice como mejor película extranjera, y en el Festival de Canes se hizo con los premios al mejor director y mejor protagonista.
It is important to clarify first that the film's title can be somewhat misleading. The narrative does not revolve around highly trained secret agents or James Bond-style espionage. Instead, it delivers a profound message regarding social struggle and serves as a sharp critique of totalitarian regimes

The title is the result of an ironic and political choice by its writer and director, Kleber Mendonça Filho. Personally, I did not fully grasp the reasoning behind the title until the film concluded. Upon reflecting on what I had just watched, I found myself empathizing deeply with its message, particularly due to the current political climate in my own country.
El título es el resultado de un juego irónico y político de su director y escritor Kleber Mendonça Filho. Personalmente entendí porque decidió llamarla así hasta que finalice la película y me detuve a pensar en lo que acababa de ver, terminando empatizando profundamente con el mensaje, debido a la situación que vivo en mi país.
The Espionage of Ordinary People
The premise centers on Marcelo, whose real name is Armando, portrayed by Wagner Moura. He is a technology expert, university professor, and scientist who is simply fleeing and living under a false identity against the backdrop of the Brazilian military dictatorship in the 1970s.

La premisa se centra en Marcelo, cuyo verdadero nombre es Armando, personaje protagonizado por Wagner Moura. Es un experto en tecnología, profesor universitario y científico que simplemente está huyendo y escondiéndose bajo una identidad falsa, en el contexto de la dictadura militar brasileña de los años 70.
Marcelo is not a genuine secret agent; he is an ordinary citizen forced to operate in hiding, collaborating in an amateur capacity with civilian networks that oppose the dictatorship and strive to overthrow it. Lacking formal training or official backing, they make every effort to remain unnoticed, effectively becoming secret agents for society.
Marcelo realmente no es un agente secreto, es un ciudadano común que se ve obligado a moverse en la clandestinidad, colaborando de forma amateur con redes civiles que se oponene a la dictadura y hacen lo posible por derrocarla. Cómo no tiene entrenamiento ni respaldo oficial, hacen todo lo posible por pasar desapercibidos, convientiendose así en agentes secretos para la sociedad.
Real Persecution and Survival
The central message of the film focuses on how individuals survive under a regime where those in power routinely abuse their authority. Marcelo is not fleeing directly from the government, but rather from a corrupt and ruthless businessman named Guirotti, who possesses strong ties to the military regime.

An important detail to highlight is that this narrative is not based on a true story. The only factual element is the legend of the Hairy Leg that purportedly attacked people, a well-known urban myth at the time. It turns out that this was an invention by the press to write freely about the dictatorship, allowing them to report on the regime's real attacks under the guise of folklore. This was a clever strategy that illustrates the creative methods society invents to resist an oppressor.
Uno detalle importante a resaltar, es que está historia no está basada en hechos reales. Lo único cierto es la historia de la Pierna Peluda, que atacaba personas, un mito urbano en aquella época. Resulta que fue un invento de la prensa para escribir libremente sobre la dictadura, y así contar sobre los ataques que perpetraba. Una jugada inteligente que muestra los inventos de la sociedad para resistir al opresor.
Final Reflections
Ultimately, the film is much more than a pursuit thriller; it is a raw portrayal of how corruption and unchecked power can strip an individual of their life, identity, and peace. Wagner Moura's brilliant performance successfully conveys the palpable anguish of a cornered man, allowing the audience to immediately connect with his vulnerability in the face of an oppressive system.
Definitivamente "El Agente Secreto" es más que un thriller de persecución; es una muestra cruda de como la corrupción y el poder, en manos de demagogos, le roban la vida a cualquiera. Me gustó el desarrollo del personaje por parte de Wagner Moura, creo que logra transmitir la angustia y vulnerabilidad frente a un sistema que lo aplasta, esto me hizo conectar rápidamente.
It is a work that justifies each of its accolades, not by offering explosions or special effects, but through its capacity to awaken consciences. Its message is an echo that, unfortunately, continues to resonate strongly within our current Latin American realities, reminding us that often the greatest act of rebellion is simply to survive.
Es una obra que recomiendo ver, la verdad justifica cada uno de sus premios. No vas a ver explosiones o efectos especiales, pero si un mensaje que sacude la conciencia, porque lamentablemente hace eco a las realidades que aún vivimos en Latinoamérica. A quienes nunca han experimento esto, les invita apreciar sus libertades. También me hizo pensar en la resiliencia que tenemos en mi país, donde actualmente el solo hecho de sobrevivir es un simple acto de rebeldía.
