I need to preface this by saying I know this movie got torched by a lot of critics when it came out, and box office wise it was basically written off as a disappointment. I get why on paper... nearly $140 million budget, mixed reviews, people calling the story thin. But I rewatched it recently with genuinely no expectations, and I came away thinking this is one of the more underrated action movies of the last decade. Sometimes the internet consensus just gets it wrong, and I think this is one of those times.
Will Smith plays Henry Brogan, an elite assassin trying to retire after one final job goes sideways, only to discover that the agency he worked for has been hunting him with a weapon he never saw coming.. a younger clone of himself, grown and trained specifically to be the perfect killer to take him down. On paper that sounds like a gimmick. In practice, it's a surprisingly effective way to force a character to confront literally every choice he's made with his life, staring across a room at a version of himself who hasn't made those choices yet.
Here's what really got me: Will Smith is doing double duty here, playing both the older, weathered Henry and the young clone, Junior, and it's genuinely impressive work. The de-aging technology used to create Junior is remarkably convincing... there were stretches where I completely forgot I wasn't watching an actual younger actor. But more than the technical achievement, Smith brings real distinction to both performances. Henry carries exhaustion and regret in every scene... Junior has this raw, coiled aggression paired with a kind of innocence that comes from not yet knowing what it costs to live such a life and Watching those two versions of the same man collide is genuinely compelling even way more than I expected going in.
Ang Lee's direction is the other reason this movie works so well for me. He shot this in high frame rate, and while that format got a rocky reception when it debuted, watching it properly, the clarity during the action sequences is honestly stunning. There's a motorcycle chase through Cartagena that's one of the most fluid, legible action sequences I've seen in years and you can actually track every movement, every hit, every near-miss, instead of the shaky-cam chaos so many modern action movies default to. Lee treats action like choreography worth actually seeing, not just feeling in vague bursts, and that restraint pays off constantly throughout the film.
Clive Owen, playing the man behind the cloning program, brings a chilling, quietly menacing presence to the antagonist role.... he's not a mustache-twirling villain, he genuinely believes in what he's built, which makes him scarier in a understated way. Mary Elizabeth Winstead holds her own well too as Henry's ally, giving the film some grounded, human stakes outside the sci-fi premise.
I know the story itself isn't doing anything wildly original.. "man confronts a version of himself" is a well-worn sci-fi concept, and the plot mechanics around the agency and the conspiracy are fairly standard genre stuff. But I don't think that's actually a weakness here. The emotional core being an aging man face to face with everything he used to be, given a literal chance to try to save a version of himself from repeating his own mistakes.. carries real weight, and I found myself thinking about it well after the credits rolled.
Maybe I just caught this one on the right night, or maybe I went in with low enough expectations that I could actually appreciate what it was doing instead of what people wanted it to be. Either way, I think history's going to be kinder to this movie than its initial release was, and I'm happy to be an early advocate for that reassessment because the movie is Genuinely well-crafted, emotionally grounded, and visually stunning.. it Deserved so much better than it got.
