Tengo que reconocer que últimamente he pensado mucho en considerar a Apple TV como una de las mejores por no decir la mejor plataforma de streaming en lo que a calidad de contenido respecta, cada vez que publico la reseña de una de sus series lo digo pero es que sería sumamente injusto no hacerlo. Llevo varias series vistas de ellos y no puedo decir que alguna haya sido mala porque sería una gran mentira, todas gozan de unas cualidades únicas y esta miniserie del día de hoy no es la excepción, el nivel de enganche que me generó ver esta historia fue importante, es una que te incomoda a un máximo nivel y esto pasa ya que es una trama en donde le estás viendo la cara a la maldad y a la muerte personificada.
I have to admit that lately I have thought a lot about considering Apple TV as one of the best if not the best streaming platform in terms of quality content, every time I publish a review of one of their series I say it but it would be extremely unfair not to do so. I have seen several series from them and I can not say that any of them has been bad because it would be a big lie, all of them have unique qualities and this miniseries today is no exception, the level of engagement that generated me to see this story was important, it is one that makes you uncomfortable at the highest level and this happens because it is a plot where you are seeing the face of evil and death personified.
Black Bird es de las historias que nos invitan a explorar mundos totalmente desconocidos para muchos, el como es la vida en una prisión de máxima seguridad para enfermos mentales y el como funciona y responde la mente humana ante hechos de nuestra infancia que sin saberlo marcan la personalidad y la forma de actuar una vez las personas en cuestión van creciendo; en otras palabras, es como una consulta psicológica en donde el paciente es una maquina de matar "inofensiva". Pero bueno, vayamos al grano y hablemos un poco de lo que es, por lo menos para mi, lo mejor que he visto en lo que va del año en lo que a thrillers se refiere.
Black Bird is one of those stories that invite us to explore worlds totally unknown to many, the life in a maximum security prison for the mentally ill and how the human mind works and responds to events of our childhood that unknowingly mark the personality and the way of acting once the people in question grow up; in other words, it is like a psychological consultation where the patient is a "harmless" killing machine. But well, let's get to the point and talk a little about what is, at least for me, the best thing I've seen so far this year as far as thrillers are concerned.
Esta es una historia basada en hechos reales sacada de un libro cuyo autor fue el protagonista de esta trama. Nos habla de Jimmy Keane (Taron Egerton) un futbolista de futbol americano que estaba llamado a ser una estrella pero que los malos caminos hicieron que esos planes se torcieran un poco y se trastocaron porque era una persona que estaba en el mundo de las drogas y del tráfico de armas. La cosa es que a él lo sentencian a diez años en la cárcel pero le ofrecen un trato que no se, si por lo menos yo, lo hubiese aceptado. O cumples tu condena completa o te trasladamos a una prisión de máxima seguridad, un propio infierno, para que consigas que un presunto asesino te diga todo lo que ha hecho. Esa fueron las palabras que le dijeron, quedaba de él si aceptaba o no.
This is a story based on true events taken from a book whose author was the protagonist of this plot. It tells us about Jimmy Keane (Taron Egerton) an American soccer player who was called to be a star but that the bad roads made that those plans were twisted a little and were upset because he was a person who was in the world of drugs and arms trafficking. The thing is that he is sentenced to ten years in prison but they offer him a deal that I don't know if I would have accepted. Either you serve your full sentence or we move you to a maximum security prison, a real hell, to get a suspected murderer to tell you everything he has done. Those were the words he was told, it was up to him whether he accepted or not.
Evidentemente se va por la segunda opción y es ahí cuando comienza la verdadera trama de esta miniserie. Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) es nuestro supuesto asesino y de quien Jimmy tendrá que hacerse "amigo" para lograr una confesión y así poder salir en libertad. La historia se pasea por todo el proceso en el que estos dos presos comienzan a hacerse amigos con conversaciones muy profundas y perturbadoras ya que la idea es que Larry entre en la mayor confianza posible pero como reza un dicho: "La confianza da asco". Pronto Jimmy se dará cuenta de la verdadera naturaleza de aquel lugar y sobretodo de Larry quien puede ser que realmente sea un asesino o tan solo un vulgar mentiroso buscando fama y reconocimiento?... nada está claro por lo que la investigación seguirá su curso.
Evidently he goes for the second option and that's when the real plot of this miniseries begins. Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) is our alleged murderer and the one Jimmy will have to "befriend" in order to get a confession so he can go free. The story walks through the whole process in which these two prisoners begin to become friends with very deep and disturbing conversations as the idea is that Larry enters into as much trust as possible but as a saying goes, "Trust sucks". Soon Jimmy will realize the true nature of that place and above all of Larry who may really be a murderer or just a common liar looking for fame and recognition... nothing is clear so the investigation will take its course.
Ver esta miniserie es entrar en un universo extraño y perturbador, los primeros capítulos son tan solo el preámbulo para lo que más adelante se podrá disfrutar, una historia llena de tensión, de una angustia perenne por no saber el como será la reacción de los personajes, una intriga ya que a medida que pasa el tiempo parece que la trama pueda cambiar repentinamente en gran parte por la angustia de la que les hablé antes, es una verdadera montaña rusa de emociones que embargan al espectador al punto de que a pesar de lo incomoda que llega a ser es muy disfrutable por la calidad que hay en pantalla. Te enganchas no solo por el factor psicológico sino porque también hay una trama policial, detectivesca e investigativa, es un seguimiento a crímenes que tienen años sin poder resolverse y que con esta movida del FBI con Jimmy se espera que hayan avances.
Watching this miniseries is to enter a strange and disturbing universe, the first chapters are just the preamble for what you can enjoy later, a story full of tension, a perennial anguish for not knowing how will be the reaction of the characters, An intrigue because as time goes by it seems that the plot may change suddenly largely because of the anguish I spoke of before, it is a real roller coaster of emotions that overwhelm the viewer to the point that despite how uncomfortable it becomes it is very enjoyable because of the quality that is on screen. You get hooked not only because of the psychological factor but also because there is a police, detective and investigative plot, it is a follow-up to crimes that have been unsolved for years and that with this move of the FBI with Jimmy is expected to have advances.
Es una historia muy cruda y triste y lo es por el trasfondo que tienen los personajes en cuestión. Es impresionante y es algo que uno piensa cuando está viendo algún capitulo, como es posible que algo tan insignificante que haya ocurrido en nuestro pasado o infancia pueda repercutir en sobre quienes somos hoy en día, que tanto nos pudo llegar a afectar "algo" y que gracias a eso tenemos la personalidad que tenemos? - eso lo podemos saber yendo a un psicólogo claro está pero a lo que me refiero es que todo esto es la premisa de esta miniserie, como un trato, unas palabras, unas acciones pueden detonar ciertas conductas en las personas. Es más simple de lo que parece pero no deja de ser curioso y fascinante.
It is a very raw and sad story and it is so because of the background of the characters in question. It is impressive and it is something that one thinks when watching a chapter, how is it possible that something so insignificant that happened in our past or childhood can have repercussions on who we are today, how much "something" could affect us and thanks to that we have the personality we have? - We can know that by going to a psychologist of course, but what I mean is that all this is the premise of this miniseries, as a deal, a few words, a few actions can detonate certain behaviors in people. It is simpler than it seems but it is curious and fascinating.
Entender la psiquis de un asesino serial es algo que hasta para los psicólogos debe de ser complicado, imagínense para uno como espectador al ver la forma de actuar, de hablar y de expresarse de Larry en pantalla, es algo que en muchos pasajes y escenas daba miedo y generaba un desconcierto muy grande. Lógicamente esto en parte es gracias a la increíble y brutal actuación de Paul Walter Hauser, tenía tiempo que no veía una interpretación como la que vi a él, en par de oportunidades podía llegar a poner la piel de gallina la frialdad con la que actuaba. Podemos decir también que es una historia que es llevada en dos frentes, lo que ocurre dentro de la cárcel y afuera con la investigación en manos de dos detectives por lo que hilo de la historia no se pierde nunca, es otra de las cosas que nos mantiene siempre alertas.
Understanding the psyche of a serial killer is something that even for psychologists must be complicated, imagine for one as a viewer to see the way Larry acts, speaks and expresses himself on screen, it is something that in many passages and scenes was scary and generated a very big bewilderment. Logically this is partly thanks to the incredible and brutal performance of Paul Walter Hauser, it had been a long time since I had seen a performance like the one I saw from him, in a couple of opportunities I could get goose bumps with the coldness with which he acted. We can also say that it is a story that is carried on two fronts, what happens inside the prison and outside with the investigation in the hands of two detectives so the thread of the story is never lost, is another thing that keeps us always alert.
Hablando un poco de los personajes empecemos con Jimmy. Todos sabemos que Taron Egerton es muy actor, todos sus trabajos han sido sólidos pero este en especial me llama la atención no tanto por las grandes interpretaciones que pueda hacer porque no, por lo menos no se compara con Paul pero si que es un personaje con una carga brutal de sentimientos, frustraciones y de ira encasillada por todo lo que le está tocando vivir y por todo lo que le tocó en su juventud y eso él lo refleja muy bien en pantalla. Cuando toca manifestar algunas de esas emociones lo aborda sin ningún tipo de problemas, si toca ser una roca lo hace pero si toca ser frágil como un cristal también lo desempeña muy bien. Un personaje que aparenta ser muy normal y común pero que en la realidad es muy complejo y está muy roto internamente.
Talking a little bit about the characters let's start with Jimmy. We all know that Taron Egerton is a great actor, all his works have been solid but this one in particular catches my attention not so much for the great interpretations that he can make because no, at least he does not compare with Paul but he is a character with a brutal load of feelings, frustrations and pigeonholed anger for everything that he is living and for everything that touched him in his youth and he reflects it very well on screen. When he has to show some of those emotions he deals with it without any problems, if he has to be a rock he does it, but if he has to be fragile as a crystal he also plays it very well. A character that appears to be very normal and common but in reality is very complex and very broken internally.
Pero el verdadero espectáculo acá es sin dudas Paul Walter Hauser con un nivel de actuación más allá de lo que cualquier pudiera esperar. Este es un actor que no ha sido muy protagonista en su carrera, más bien ha tenido papeles secundarios pero amigos, eso estoy seguro que va a cambiar después de Black Bird. Interpretar a un asesino serial tan frio, calculador y desconectado de la realidad como Larry Hall es algo que no es sencillo de hacer yo diría que hasta para un actor de nombre y la manera en como Paul lo personificó es suprema. El cambio físico, en el habla, en la mirada y hasta en la crueldad de la personalidad creo que fueron elementos que Paul logró exponer y llevar a un nivel mucho más aterrador de lo que originalmente se pudiera pensar al comenzar a ver esta miniserie. Me sorprendió gratamente porque no esperaba una actuación del calibre del que vi en esta historia, la verdad es que vale mucho la pena de ver y apreciar.
But the real show here is undoubtedly Paul Walter Hauser with a level of acting beyond what anyone could expect. This is an actor who hasn't been much of a leading man in his career, more of a supporting role, but my friends, I'm sure that will change after Black Bird. Playing a serial killer as cold, calculating and disconnected from reality as Larry Hall is something that is not easy to do I would say even for a name actor and the way Paul portrayed him is supreme. The change physically, in speech, in the look and even in the cruelty of the personality I think were elements that Paul managed to expose and bring to a much more terrifying level than you might originally think when you start watching this miniseries. I was pleasantly surprised because I was not expecting a performance of the caliber I saw in this story, the truth is that it is well worth watching and appreciating.
Hay que hacer una mención especial a Ray Liotta quien falleció en mayo de este año y que por suerte pudo terminar esta miniserie. Otro gran actor que hizo vida en esta historia haciendo del papa de Jimmy. Aunque su paso por la pantalla fue limitado lo poco que vimos fue estupendo, como siempre lo hacía en sus papeles. Un padre con un amor incondicional hacia su hijo pero que por diversas cosas que verán acá no pudo ser lo que él quiso ser. Un personaje muy dramático y sentido. Una lastima su partida pero afortunadamente pudimos disfrutarlo una vez más actuando.
A special mention must be made to Ray Liotta who passed away in May of this year and was fortunately able to finish this miniseries. Another great actor who played Jimmy's father in this story. Although his screen time was limited, the little we saw of him was great, as he always did in his roles. A father with unconditional love for his son but that for several things that you will see here could not be what he wanted to be. A very dramatic and heartfelt character. A pity his departure but fortunately we were able to enjoy him acting once again.
Termino diciendo que esta es de las mejores cosas que he visto en lo que va de año, un thriller que no te dejará indiferente por la trama tan oscura y por la calidad y el nivel de actuaciones que hay en ella. Un suspenso psicológico como pocos en donde lo que predomina es la incomodidad e incertidumbre del convivir tan cerca de una mente tan marchita y dañada como la de Larry Hall. Otro buen producto de Apple Tv.
I end by saying that this is one of the best things I've seen so far this year, a thriller that will not leave you indifferent because of the dark plot and the quality and level of performances in it. A psychological suspense like few others where what predominates is the discomfort and uncertainty of living so close to a mind as withered and damaged as that of Larry Hall. Another good Apple TV product.
9.5/10 porque cuando dije que era el mejor thriller del año hasta ahora no mentía al respecto. Creo que todos deberían de verlo, esto si es un contenido que merece llevarse los premios a los que puede ser nominados en un futuro. Consta de seis episodios de una hora aproximadamente y ya saben donde encontrarlo. Les dejo el tráiler para que le echen un vistazo.
9.5/10 because when I said it was the best thriller of the year so far I wasn't lying about it. I think everyone should watch it, this is content that deserves to take the awards it may be nominated for in the future. It consists of six episodes of about an hour and you know where to find it. No había visto absolutamente nada sobre esta serie. Sí que la había oído y visto en algunos otros lugares, pero no una review sobre tal, no. Gracias por hacerla y pues, ahora sí me han dado ganas de echarle un ojo y verla por mi mismo. Buen trabajo, amigo.
Ya sabes que opino igual, esta gente de Apple tv al tener pocas producciones se enfocan en hacerlas de calidad. Me recuerda a la edad de oro de HBO que igualmente todavía produce más calidad que cantidad. Es bueno que existan estás alternativas. Los de Apple tv dijeron que el streaming no les produce nada de ganancia, su negocio está en sus productos, están pensando a largo plazo y al mismo tiempo es algo que complementa su marca.
Paul Walter Hauser es quien hace la mejor interpretación. La primera vez que ví a ese actor fue en la serie de artes marciales mixtas Kingdom, allí hacia un personaje un poco autista pero que también llega a hacer cosas malas.

you got me at Taron Egerton, but i stayed for this interesting plot! 😃 and add the fact that there's nothing as spine-chilling as the the words 'true story' when we're taking a thriller genre approach here, might be something I'll decide to see, thank you for sharing about this with your awesome review! 😄
