It's well known that tastes in the arts are highly subjective, and film is no exception. You wouldn't believe how many videos I watched where people recommended movies, and this one, "Don't Go In," was among them. When a lie is repeated often enough, it can become the truth, and I think that's exactly what's happening, or rather, what happened, with this attempt at a horror film. I decided to give it a chance, and the result wasn't what I expected; it was much worse. I struggle to understand how someone who calls themselves a "film director" can produce such a mediocre film. But anyway, I watched it, and if you're curious, I'll tell you a little about what it's about.
Se sabe de sobra que los gustos en los artes son muy subjetivos y el cine no es la excepción a esa regla. No se imaginan cuantos videos llegué a ver en donde personas recomendaban películas y entre ese grupo de films estaba esta, "No Entres". Cuando una mentira se repite muchas veces se puede convertir en verdad y creo que justamente eso es lo que está pasando o pasó con este intento de película de terror. Quise darle la oportunidad y el resultado no era el que esperaba, fue bastante peor. Me cuesta entender como una persona que se hace llamar "director de cine" es capaz de salir con semejante mediocridad de película. Pero bueno, igual se vio y por si la curiosidad les gana, les hablo un poco de que va.
Marc Klasfeld directed this "brilliant" film based on David Morrell's novel Creepers. The need to be someone on social media is absurdly strong, the desire to be noticed and have numbers, virality, and views. This affliction affects four friends who dedicate themselves to urban exploration and have a YouTube channel. For those who don't know, urban exploration is simply investigating abandoned places. Faced with their lack of fame and impact, they decide to raise the bar and visit the Paragon Hotel, a hotel with many stories, including paranormal ones and disappearances; it has a mafia past, and to top it all off, there's talk of a hidden $300 million stash.
Marc Klasfeld fue el director de esta "genialidad" basada en la novela de Creepers de David Morrell. La necesidad de ser alguien en redes sociales es absurdamente grande, de querer figurar y tener números, viralidad y reproducciones/vistas y ese mal lo padecen 4 amigos que se dedican a la exploración urbana y que tienen un canal de Youtube. Para los que no sepan que es la exploración urbana es simplemente ir a investigar lugares abandonados. Ante la poca fama y repercusión que están teniendo deciden subir la vara y emprender una visita al Hotel Paragon, un hotel que tiene muchas historias entre ellas algunas paranormales y de desapariciones; tiene un pasado mafioso y para cerrar se habla de la existencia de botín de 300 millones de dólares escondido.
Driven by curiosity and the need to achieve the coveted internet recognition, they head to the Paragon to see what awaits them. The surprise is that, in addition to encountering another group of brainless explorers, they'll have to share that space with a creature that will gradually begin to stalk and hunt them. The film doesn't really get going until about halfway through, lasting an hour and a half, which is appreciated. At the beginning, we get some context about who they are and the group dynamic: typical young adventurers who think they're invincible. Once at the hotel, the suspense finally kicks in. Well, half-hearted suspense. For me, as a horror film, it never worked; I never connected with it. This creature (something like Slenderman) inspired anything but fear or respect, and I didn't understand the plot or backstory either.
Ante la curiosidad y la necesidad de conseguir el tan ansiado reconocimiento del internet ponen marcha al Paragon para ver con que se consiguen. La sorpresa es que además de toparse con otro grupo de descerebrados, exploradores también, les tocará compartir aquel espacio con una criatura que poco a poco los comenzará a acechar y cazar. La película arranca de verdad casi por la mitad, dura hora y media, cosa que se agradece. Al principio tenemos un poco de contexto de quienes son y de la dinámica del grupo, típicos jóvenes aventureros que se creen invencibles. Una vez en el hotel el suspenso es cuando hace presencia. Bueno, un suspenso a medias. Para mi como film de terror nunca funcionó, nunca conecté, esta criatura (algo así como un Slenderman) daba de todo menos miedo o respeto y que la trama o trasfondo de la historia tampoco le vi sentido.
I finished watching the movie because I wanted to see if all the horror clichés held true, and yes, most of them did. Look, the pure horror scenes aren't that badly done; I mean, the deaths we see are interesting, some very superficial, but I can accept them. For me, it lacked suffering and drama; that desperation that exists in horror movies was absent here. There was more fear thanks to the other group of explorers, but only because of how terrible they were as characters. This creature never asserts itself; it pursued them, but it all seemed like a parody; it wasn't scary or terrifying. They explain its origin, but very superficially, with a story that could have been invented by a 7-year-old. Its appearance is awful; a carnival ride in a small town is scarier. And that's about it. As I said, there are very few decent things, but for the most part, it's unbearable to watch.
Terminé de ver la película porque quise comprobar si todos los clichés del terror se cumplían y si, la gran mayoría si. A ver, las escenas puras de terror no están tan mal hechas, es decir, las muertes que vemos están interesantes, algunas muy superficiales pero las puedo aceptar. Para mi faltó sufrimiento y drama, esa desesperación que existe en las películas de terror acá no existió; hubo más miedo gracias al otro grupo de exploradores pero por lo terribles que eran como personajes. Esta criatura nunca se impone, perseguía pero todo parecía una parodia, no daba miedo ni terror. Su origen lo explican pero muy por encima con una historia que pudo haber sido inventada por un niño de 7 años. Su apariencia es nefasta, una atracción de una feria de un pueblo asusta más. Y poco más, como les dije, tiene cosas contadas con los dedos de las manos que son decentes pero en su mayoría esto es insoportable de ver.
The acting. Absolutely nothing to write home about. Everything is very average, one-dimensional, no one stands out. The ending of the film ties in somewhat with what I was saying about the lack of suffering; everything turns out relatively well. I understand that not everyone has to die, but if we're talking about horror, you have to give the audience something to justify that what they experienced was real. The fate of this creature is the same: bland, zero emotion. In short, we have a film that, if it had been better developed, with a decent level of fear and suspense and a truly imposing creature, would undoubtedly be much better. I really encourage you to see it because I want to know if I'm not the only one who thinks this way. And if you've already seen it, tell me what you thought. I'll leave the trailer below.
Actuaciones. Absolutamente nada que destacar. Todo muy promedio, lineal, nadie destaca. El final de la película va un poco con lo que decía de esa carencia de sufrimiento, todo sale relativamente bien, entiendo que no siempre tienen que morir todos pero si es un terror de lo que estamos hablando pues algo tienes que darle a la audiencia para justificar que lo que viviste fue real. El destino de esta criatura pues lo mismo, insípido, cero emoción. En fin, tenemos una película que si la hubiesen desarrollado mejor, con un factor miedo y suspenso a la altura y una criatura que de verdad impusiera, sin dudas esto estaría mucho más arriba. La verdad los invito a que la vean porque quiero saber si no soy el unico en pensar de esta forma. Y si ya la viste pues cuéntame que te pareció. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
