If there are platforms that know how to create quality content, I think Apple TV is undoubtedly one of them. Finding a bad series or movie from them is a difficult task; maybe not all of them are top-notch, but not all of them good? That's unheard of. Today I'm going to talk about Lucky, a 7-episode miniseries that immediately caught my attention because it stars Anya Taylor-Joy, an actress I hadn't seen on screen for a while (The Gorge was the last thing I saw her in). Here she's in a different role with a different plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat and entertained. Constantly escaping because your life is immersed in scams and robberies is something full of action and suspense, and that's exactly what this miniseries delivers from beginning to end.
Si hay plataformas que saben hacer contenido de calidad creo que sin dudas una de ellas sería Apple TV. Conseguir que una serie o película que venga de ellos sea mala es una tarea complicada, capaz no todas sean de alto nivel pero que no sean buenas? - eso no pasa. El día de hoy les voy a hablar de Lucky, una miniserie de 7 episodios que de buenas a primeras me llamó la atención porque está protagonizada por Anya Taylor-Joy, una actriz la cual tenía un tiempo sin ver en pantalla (The Gorge fue lo último que había visto de ella). Acá está en un papel distinto con una trama diferente la cual te mantendrá alerta y entretenido y es que estar escapando constantemente porque tu vida está inmersa en estafas y robos es algo que está lleno de acción y expectativa y eso es algo que esta miniserie nos muestra de principio a fin.
We have Lucky, or Luciana Armstrong, a young woman who grew up with a father who lived for nothing but swindling people; he didn't know how to do anything else. This instilled in her a knack for corruption and skills that have allowed her to survive by doing the only thing she knows, the very thing her father taught her. One day, accompanied by her husband Cary, they decide to pull off a big heist and steal 10 million dollars. The question here is, who does that money belong to? And yes, it belongs to some criminals. After a night of celebration following the robbery, Lucky wakes up dazed and disoriented, discovering that neither her husband nor the money is in the hotel room. Chaos ensues.
Tenemos a Lucky o Luciana Armstrong, una joven mujer que le tocó crecer y ser criada por un padre el cual vivía por y para estafar a la gente, él no sabía hacer otra cosa en su vida. Todo esto la hizo empaparse de malas mañas y habilidades que le han permitido sobrevivir haciendo lo único que sabe y que al final fue lo que le enseño su padre. Un buen día, acompañada de su esposo Cary, deciden dar un gran golpe y se roban 10 millones de dólares. El tema acá es a quien pertenece ese dinero y si, es de unos criminales. Después de una noche de celebración tras ese robo Lucky amanece aturdida y desorientada y descubre que ni su esposo ni el dinero están en la habitación de hotel. Se desata el caos.
Why the chaos? Because now the FBI is after her, along with these criminals who also want her money. Alone and confused, she'll have to navigate all the obstacles in her path, using everything she's learned over the years to uncover the truth of what's really going on, so she can get her husband back and, above all, the money. This is a police thriller and chase story where the action starts right from the first episode. It could even be considered a survival story, since what Lucky experiences and the things she has to do are quite extreme and dangerous. These are situations where if she doesn't think clearly and keep a cool head, she'll literally die. I liked this because being constantly on the move, escaping, but at the same time using her con artist skills to get ahead is very entertaining to watch. That's why I think this miniseries goes by so quickly.
Por que un caos? - pues porque ahora el FBI vas tras ella junto a estos criminales que también quieren su dinero. Sola y confundida ella tendrá que hacerse paso a través de todos los obstáculos que se atraviesen, y usando todo lo aprendido en años, para dar con la verdad de lo que realmente está pasando para así conseguir a su esposo y sobretodo al dinero. Acá estamos ante un thriller policial y de persecución en donde la acción se hace presente desde el mismo primer capitulo. Pudiera ser hasta de supervivencia ya que lo que vive Lucky y las cosas que le toca hacer son bien extremas y peligrosas, son situaciones en las que si no piensa y pone la mente fría y en blanco literalmente se muere. Me gustó esto porque estar en constante movimiento escapando pero al mismo usando sus habilidades de estafadora para hacerse camino es una cosa muy entretenida de ver, por esto creo que esta miniserie se ve tan rápido.
The plot, the whole background, is cool. It's not as linear as it seems, since there are several really interesting and unexpected plot twists. You think you're up to date on what's happening, or that you have everything covered, but the reality is that you don't. There's always something you don't see, and this is thanks to Lucky's ability to anticipate what's going to happen. This is especially true at the end of the story; honestly, I was surprised by everything that ends up happening in that scene. Speaking of scenes, the chases, both on foot and by car, the whole escape sequences, and the police deployments—all of that is well done. It's strange because there wasn't anything specific I disliked, but at the same time, I don't consider it one of the best miniseries I've ever seen; maybe it was the ending or some things that happen that don't make sense (sometimes Lucky escaped too easily).
La trama, el trasfondo de todo está cool, no es tan lineal como pareciera ya que hay varios plot twist bien interesante e inesperados. Uno cree que está al día de lo que está pasando o creemos tener todo cubierto pero la realidad es que no, siempre hay algo que no vemos y esto es gracias a esas habilidades de anteponerse a lo que va a pasar que tiene Lucky. Esto pasa con el final de la historia, honestamente quedé sorprendido con todo lo que termina pasando en esa escena. Hablando de escenas decir que las persecuciones, tanto a pie como en carro, todo el asunto de escapar y de los despliegues policiales, todo eso está bien logrado. Es raro porque no hubo algo en concreto que me no me gustara pero al mismo tiempo no considero que sea de las mejores miniseries que haya visto; capaz fue su final o algunas cosas que pasan que no se entienden (a veces Lucky escapaba muy fácil).
The characters. Anya is a very good actress, very versatile. I didn't expect her to be in this kind of crime/police action role, and she really delivered. Her character is complex because she has a lot of trauma related to her father, so she's in a constant internal battle to be a better person, and we see this throughout the miniseries. The other excellent characters are Priscilla (Annette Bening) and Agent Rand (Aunjanue Ellis), a pair of women who know what they want, even though they're on different sides. Their performances are very serious, and their personalities are well-defined; without them, the miniseries wouldn't work. In short, this is a decent Apple TV production. It's not the best I've seen from them, but it's very watchable and enjoyable. It has everything: drama, action, intrigue; a true crime thriller. Recommended; it's a quick watch and perfect for passing the time. I've included the trailer below.
Sus personajes. Anya es muy buena actriz, es muy versátil, no la tenía en este rol de acción criminal/policial y la verdad es que cumplió muy bien. Su personaje es complejo porque tiene muchos traumas por y con su padre por lo que ella está en una constante batalla interna por ser mejor persona y esto lo vivimos en toda la miniserie. Los otros personajes que están muy buenos son los de Priscilla (Annette Bening) y el de la agente Rand (Aunjanue Ellis), par de mujeres que saben lo que quieren, aunque estén en bandos diferentes, pero sus actuaciones son muy serias y sus personalidades son bien marcadas; sin ellas la miniserie no funcionaría. En fin, estamos ante una decente producción de Apple TV, no es lo mejor que he visto de ellos pero es muy pasable y disfrutable. Tiene de todo, drama, acción, intriga; un thriller criminal con todas sus letras. Recomendada, se ve rápido y es ideal para pasar el rato. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
