Hello friends, good vibes to all.
I usually switch platforms to see what I find interesting or what I can read about that is in vogue in the last days or weeks and this time it was the turn of a movie that has just two weeks of release on Prime Video. As usual some sites make a list of the best films of the year when this one is about to end and it caught my attention that Nanny was on that list as far as the horror genre was concerned, usually I don't pay attention to those lists but there were also several titles that were already seen and that were pretty good so I said to myself, what can I lose? - at most the hour and a half that it has of duration.
There is a custom that I don't really understand that consists in giving the genre of horror to everything that has a slight disturbance in its plot, to that "inexplicable" detail that hooks us to a story and that out of mere curiosity we keep watching until we see if we can solve or discover what was out of the ordinary, I guess they do it to draw more attention and make a film a little more attractive to the eyes of the viewers. Fortunately one is a little seasoned with these practices so that to trust with a genre is something that I always choose not to do, I let the plot do its thing and then discuss whether they got it right or not. But, did they get it right? - In the background yes, in the form not so much? Let's talk about this curious film and what it is about.
This story begins with Aisha (Anna Diop), an immigrant who, like everyone else, has to make a living, hence her most recent job is as a nanny for a very wealthy couple in New York. She has to live with Rose, a little girl who she soon grows very fond of despite how problematic she can be at times. Aisha is from Senegal, so her roots are deeply rooted in her way of life, her way of thinking, her food and very importantly, her beliefs. This leads us to the fact that in her native country she left her son, which is why she works so hard, she hopes that in the future they will be able to meet on American soil and continue with their life which was interrupted by necessity.
But something happens with Aisha, we begin to see her scattered, out of her mind, in situations that are difficult to differentiate between reality, a dream or a simple hallucination. This happens as the date of her son's return approaches, it is as if something wants to alert her that things are not going well, every day the torment is more serious and even dangerous both for her and for all those around her. The plot takes hold of this, we will see how Aisha's daily life is accompanied by some very disturbing and strange episodes that rather than warning her what they do is to confuse her.
Let's start with what is obvious to me. This film, in my opinion, is not horror, it may have a few touches in one scene or another but to call it horror is a serious mistake, one that is becoming more and more common. Nanny is a psychological drama that delves into loneliness, the difficulties of being in a place where you don't belong and above all being away from what you love the most, be it a son, a mother, etc. So why the horror? - The film seeks to show those thoughts, that anxiety in the form of inexplicable situations, in very vivid dreams that could be considered omens of the afterlife. It is really a bit complicated to explain if you have not seen the film but basically it is that, a supernatural force that seeks to deliver a message and does so through various means.
With this I do not mean that the film is a complete waste because it really is not, in addition to what has already been said we also see how hard life is for the immigrant in the sense of fighting for what is rightfully his. In that sense the interaction with the family she works for is quite complex, a mother practically absent for work, a father who has some strange attitudes and personality and as a result of all that the degree of empathy and rapport between the daughter and Aisha is increasingly large, something that in the end I do not know if it is good or not. The thing is that it is a difficult film to watch, it is rare, you do not get tired of watching it but you feel that something is missing for the plot to explode.
Don't expect to be scared or jump out of your chair, this is not that kind of movie. It is a much denser "horror" that plays a lot with the mind, with the perceptions of things, with the expectation, with creating an atmosphere of tension that leads us to expect something to happen, hence for me and as I told you this film leans a little more towards a psychological drama. Personally and despite everything I was not bored and that feeling of wanting to know what will happen the next second is what makes you not leave. The scenes are very well done, if what they were looking for was to create discomfort, they succeeded. The colors, the cinematography, the photography, all those details were excellent, nothing to say.
We had already seen Anna Diop in "US" and since then we know what a good actress she is. In this role of Aisha we see her as a mother who suffers the absence of her son, that pain, that anguish, that eternal worry is one that she manages to convey very well. If we add to this all the scenes where she is asked to deliver the agony and horror of being immersed in something that can not be explained and manage to convey that feeling to the viewer we can say that the acting is ten and is that the weight of this film rests solely on her, all others are merely secondary characters.
A 6.5/10 because as a psychological drama/thriller it's decent, as a horror film it's a failure. It has a good story, the ending was good, at least it convinced me, it was a good closure and something that helps us understand much more the context of everything. Do I recommend it? - If you have some free time, yes, now as a duty, not so much. You can find it on Prime Video and has a duration of a little over an hour and a half. I leave the trailer below.
Bueno mi gente por hoy es todo, espero que les haya gustado. ¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
