Ok, this is new for this blog but still I want to carry it out because I am a big fan of series, I think even more than movies and I am going to start with three series that I really think that everyone should watch. This is also born of the need to bring new things to the blog in order to create diversity and that the content is more varied.
This first series is "The Handmaids Tale" or El Cuento de la Criada in Spanish. It is a series that really marks you completely because of how deep and intense it is. It touches on very delicate topics that are a little in line with the world we live in when it comes to women's rights and homophobia.
This story is first of all based on a novel by a Canadian writer, Margaret Atwood, published in 1985. This begins in a utopian future where the United States, as the country we know, falls as a nation by a civil war that originated due to the low birth rate as a result of high pollution. Consequently, a deeply authoritarian state with very strong religious roots called "GILEAD" is established.
The terrible thing about this place is that in it women are mere objects, they don't have any kind of rights. Within this absurd scheme, there are several levels: the sterile women are called "Marthas" and they are only servants, that is their only job; Now if you are one of the few women who are still fertile they call you "Handmaid", they will train and educate you so that in the future you will be able to accept being raped by the male heads of Gilead so that in that way you can start to populate the country again.
There is a third group of women who are the wives of the "commanders" who apparently have a little more privilege but in reality it is a fantasy because as I said, the women at Gilead have no say.
The chilling thing about Gilead is that everything is driven by "religious fanaticism" where the way of thinking and the actions that are taken are given by a "superior being" who is the one who orders whether something is right or wrong. All this under the strict control of society.
Elisabeth Moss, the protagonist, is the star of this series that under the name of June, a "handmaid" is separated from her family while trying to escape. When she is captured, they name her "Offred", this because that is the name of her "owner", the nefarious commander Fred Waterford who rapes her every night as a result of a religious ritual.
Honestly, watching each episode of this series generates a lot of feelings in me that range from anger, helplessness to hope. The latter is because despite the terrible situation in which the women of Gilead live they never lose faith that at some point things can change. And that is the incredible thing about that series, the roller coaster of emotions that in a single chapter it is capable of transmitting.
Everything in this series is exquisite, the narration, script, character management, photography, staging, etc. It is one of those jewels that many people do not see because it is not as well known as I would like it to be.
And it is true that this story may seem quite unlikely to happen in a world like today, but it is also true that in many parts of the planet these things unfortunately happen, and not as far as we might think. That is why I always tell everyone that if you can see this series, watch it so that you understand that at any time these situations can happen.
This series can be seen through the HULU streaming service, currently it reaches a third season but waiting for the next fourth to premiere in the course of this year 2021.
