No les ha pasado que cuando comienzan o deciden ver una película y están pensando que la trama va por un camino determinado pero resulta que al final esta da un giro de 180 grados y termina siendo algo que no esperaban, no quedan como medio descolocados? - pues esto exactamente es lo que me pasó a mi con este film. Debo admitir que tomo la decisión de ver la película por Jenna Ortega, creo que siempre va a ser bueno verla actuar sabiendo lo bien que lo hace pero también reconozco que la historia me tomó por sorpresa, pensé que sería un thriller psicológico/drama pero no, es un film que habla de lo prohibido a través de la literatura erótica y de la relación entre una estudiante con su profesor.

Has it ever happened to you that when you start or decide to watch a movie and you are thinking that the plot is going a certain way but it turns out that at the end it takes a 180 degree turn and ends up being something that you did not expect, you are not left a little bit confused? - Well, this is exactly what happened to me with this film. I must admit that I made the decision to see the film because of Jenna Ortega, I think it will always be good to see her acting knowing how well she does it but I also recognize that the story took me by surprise, I thought it would be a psychological thriller/drama but no, it is a film that talks about the forbidden through erotic literature and the relationship between a student and her teacher.

Esta curiosa historia da inicio con Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman) un escritor que gracias a las duras críticas que ha recibido en su trabajo decidió dejar la escritura para comenzar un nuevo camino como profesor en una escuela pública. Resulta que en su clase de escritura hay una estudiante que sobresale por encima del resto, una que quizás sea muy particular y singular para el sitio en donde está, ella es Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega). La cosa es que poco a poco estos dos se van dando cuenta que tienen más cosas en común de lo que imaginaban por lo que se va armando una relación un tanto peligrosa y arriesgada.

This curious story begins with Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman) a writer who thanks to the harsh criticism he has received in his work decided to leave writing to start a new path as a teacher in a public school. It turns out that in his writing class there is a student who stands out above the rest, one that is perhaps very particular and unique for the place where she is, she is Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega). The thing is that little by little these two are realizing that they have more in common than they imagined so a somewhat dangerous and risky relationship is being built.

La trama se centra en cómo la relación a medida que pasa el tiempo se va haciendo cada vez más incontrolable y eso pasa en gran parte por las carencias que ambos tienen en sus vidas. Es entonces cuando esa delgada línea entre lo que está bien o no busca romperse pero sin que lo haga del todo porque al final estamos hablando de algo que para la sociedad no está bien visto en ningún sentido. Veremos cómo todo se va convirtiendo en una relación netamente emocional en donde la aceptación de uno con el otro termina siendo un factor determinante. Como dije esta película no es lo que esperaba pero acá estoy sentado haciendo esta reseña como un ejercicio de tolerancia.

The plot focuses on how the relationship as time goes by becomes increasingly uncontrollable and that happens largely because of the shortcomings that both have in their lives. It is then when that thin line between what is right and what is not seeks to break but without doing so at all because in the end we are talking about something that for society is not well seen in any sense. We will see how everything becomes a purely emotional relationship where the acceptance of one with the other ends up being a determining factor. As I said, this movie is not what I expected, but I am sitting here doing this review as an exercise of tolerance.

Y ojo, lo último no lo digo porque sea mala o un desastre sino porque sencillamente no es para mí, me sentí estafado al darme cuenta realmente de qué iba la película: es una mezcla de cualquier drama romántico con un poco de "cincuentas sombras de Grey". Y es que Miller como les comenté es escritor pero su género es el de la literatura erótica por lo que muchas de las cosas que suceden acá es con esa situación presente, al punto de que hay escenas muy complicadas e incómodas de ver. Creo que para alguien fanático de este tipo de historias estoy seguro que disfrutaría mucho viendo el cómo se va tejiendo esta relación y bajo que condiciones lo va haciendo.

And mind you, I'm not saying the last thing because it's bad or a disaster but because it's simply not for me, I felt cheated when I realized what the movie was really about: it's a mixture of any romantic drama with a bit of "Fifty Shades of Grey". And the thing is that Miller as I told you is a writer but his genre is erotic literature so many of the things that happen here is with that situation present, to the point that there are very complicated and uncomfortable scenes to watch. I think that for someone who is a fan of this kind of stories I'm sure they would enjoy watching how this relationship is woven and under what conditions.

Esto también va mucho acerca de traumas que estas personas tienen en sus vidas y en función a ellos es que se van desenvolviendo. Él es un fracasado en su profesión por lo que necesita esa aprobación y adulación constante para sentirse mejor y más importante, de ahí a que haya caído en las redes de Cairo. Por el otro lado ella es una joven que no ha experimentado nada en su vida, carece de todo tipo de emociones y experiencias, padres ausentes pero no del todo; por lo que sin pensarlo mucho decide abrirse, en sentido figurado, a cosas nuevas. El tema es que al final todo esto permite darnos cuenta de como son cada uno en realidad, hay situaciones que sacan el verdadero yo de las personas.

This also goes a lot about the traumas that these people have in their lives and it is based on them that they develop. He is a failure in his profession so he needs that constant approval and adulation to feel better and more important, hence he has fallen into Cairo's nets. On the other hand she is a young woman who has not experienced anything in her life, lacks all kinds of emotions and experiences, absent parents but not entirely; so without much thought she decides to open up, figuratively speaking, to new things. The point is that in the end all this allows us to realize how each one is in reality, there are situations that bring out the true self of people.

Evidentemente al final todo tiene un giro que quizás es lo que hizo que la película no haya sido una pérdida de tiempo total, caemos en temas de consentimiento o no, de venganzas, resentimientos, de la no aceptación de las cosas. Creo que cosas como estas son más comunes de lo que uno pudiera pensar en la vida real, al final nadie está excento de que estas cosas les sucedan. ya que pasan muy rápido y que siempre va a haber alguien más maquiavélico que uno. Las actuaciones estuvieron bien, Jenna es muy top, es un papel que le quedó como anillo al dedo ya que todo gira en torno a ella. Freeman si fue más neutro, más promedio y nada especial.

Evidently at the end everything has a twist that perhaps is what made the film not a total waste of time, we fall into themes of consent or not, revenge, resentment, the non-acceptance of things. I think things like this are more common than one might think in real life, in the end no one is exempt from these things happening to them. since they happen so fast and that there is always going to be someone more Machiavellian than you. The performances were good, Jenna is very top notch, it's a role that fit her like a glove since everything revolves around her. Freeman was more neutral, more average and nothing special.

Le doy un 6/10 porque no es para mi, no es un mal film pero es que sencillamente no es el contenido que consumo. Me gustó hacer la reseña porque al ser algo diferente requiere como una especie de exigencia extra. Si les gusta lo romántico, el drama y claro está, los toques sexuales y eróticos pues esto es para ustedes. Está en Prime Video y dura menos de 2 horas. La recomiendo? - si, a pesar de lo que dije es algo muy interesante y particular de ver. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.

I give it a 6/10 because it's not for me, it's not a bad film but it's simply not the content I consume. I liked doing the review because being something different requires a kind of extra demand. If you like romance, drama and of course, sexual and erotic touches then this is for you. It's on Prime Video and it's less than 2 hours long. Do I recommend it? - Yes, despite what I said it's something very interesting and particular to watch. I leave you the trailer below.
