While some focus on a meaningless debate saying which series is better. For me both are one and the same and occupy the same place in my top best series. These are my thoughts after watching the final episode of Better Call Saul, so this post has a lot of spoilers and only those who have seen the series will understand.
Mientras que algunos se centran en un debate sin sentido diciendo qué serie es mejor. Para mí ambas son una misma y ocupan el mismo lugar en mi top de mejores series. Estos son mis pensamientos después de ver el episodio final de Better Call Saul, por lo que este post tiene muchos spoilers y solo los que hayan visto la serie lo entenderán.
A bus bound for Florida. The day was hectic, he had taken a great weight off his shoulders, telling the truth with a sworn statement in court and confessing what he knew to Howard's wife.
A busload of strangers, but there comes a time when the mind and body find it impossible to hold steady in that bubble created to escape the past.
The regrets, the pain, the guilt. Kim can't take it anymore. That cry is devastating for those of us who have followed the story for all these years. It tears at our hearts, because we know what it means. We have witnessed it all and it is impossible not to break down with Kim.
The scene above occurs in the antepenultimate episode of the series. This was the Ozymandias of BCS. Unlike Breaking Bad, there was no shooting or death in that episode, proving that it is only necessary to stimulate our emotions with looks, silence and a liberating cry.
Kim
In the last post I wrote about the series, when the fourth season ended, I had stated the importance I give to Kim's character in the whole series. I don't know if it was planned that way from the beginning or if she was simply a character that flowed as the writers wrote the episodes.
I remember saying that Kim was the balance point between Jimmy and Saul. Also, that the decisions and plans they agreed upon would be vitally important to Jimmy's overall transition. We knew she would play a major role in everything, which made all of us fans fear for her fate.
The Internet was abuzz with fan theories about the series, especially one that predicted Kim might die, which would be the trigger for Saul to fully emerge, leaving Jimmy buried. Fortunately the writers did one better, something that completely changed the overall outlook of both series.
The trigger
It had already been said in many interviews by the series creator. We would see Breaking Bad differently when Better Call Saul ended. We didn't know what he meant, but now that it's over you can admire the big picture.
Jimmy's transformation into Saul came slowly, each season there were more and more hints of what would one day be the lawyer every criminal in Albuquerque would seek out. Already a master of deception, con artist and sneaky, he always managed to get away with it. He always had the guile.
The only thing he lacked was the trigger, the turning point that would turn him completely into this unscrupulous being, who only ambitions to have money. That trigger had a first and last name: Kim" Wexler. She was the one who showed more cold blood on many occasions, she was the one who threatened like a wolf to the sheep that crossed her path, Kim was the one who was determined to execute the plans they had together, even if the obstacles were present, but it was now or never.
The coldness in Saul Goodman's manner was actually copied from Kim. She was molding part of Saul's personality. Because as she told him the night of the breaking point: together we are poison.
When they worked together they became a lethal weapon and she had too much of it with what happened to Howard, a victim who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The decision to leave Jimmy was what caused her to use that armor called Saul Goodman to move on. The pain, the breakup, being abandoned, losing the woman he loved was very important in his transformation.
Un autobús con destino a Florida. El día fue agitado, se había quitado un gran peso de encima, diciendo la verdad con una declaración jurada en el juzgado y confesando lo que sabía a la mujer de Howard.
Un autobús lleno de desconocidos, pero llega un momento en que a la mente y al cuerpo les resulta imposible mantenerse firmes en esa burbuja creada para escapar del pasado.
Los remordimientos, el dolor, la culpa. Kim no puede aguantar más. Ese llanto es devastador para quienes hemos seguido la historia durante todos estos años. Nos desgarra el corazón, porque sabemos lo que significa. Hemos sido testigos de todo y es imposible no derrumbarse con Kim.
La escena anterior ocurre en el antepenúltimo episodio de la serie. Este fue el Ozymandias de BCS. A diferencia de Breaking Bad, en ese episodio no hubo disparos ni muertes, demostrando que sólo es necesario estimular nuestras emociones con miradas, silencio y un llanto liberador.
Kim
En el último post que escribí sobre la serie, cuando terminó la cuarta temporada, había manifestado la importancia que le doy al personaje de Kim en toda la serie. No sé si estaba planeado así desde el principio o si simplemente era un personaje que iba fluyendo a medida que los guionistas escribían los episodios.
Recuerdo haber dicho que Kim era el punto de equilibrio entre Jimmy y Saul. También, que las decisiones y planes que acordaran serían de vital importancia para la transición general de Jimmy. Sabíamos que ella tendría un papel importante en todo, lo que hizo que todos los fans temiéramos por su destino.
Internet se llenó de teorías de los fans de la serie, especialmente una que predecía que Kim podría morir, lo que sería el detonante para que Saul emergiera por completo, dejando a Jimmy enterrado. Afortunadamente los guionistas hicieron algo mejor, algo que cambió por completo la visión general de ambas series.
El detonante
Ya lo habían dicho en muchas entrevistas el creador de la serie. Veríamos Breaking Bad de forma diferente cuando terminara Better Call Saul. No sabíamos a qué se refería, pero ahora que ha terminado se puede admirar el panorama.
La transformación de Jimmy en Saul llegó poco a poco, cada temporada había más indicios de lo que un día sería el abogado que todos los criminales de Albuquerque buscarían. Ya era un maestro del engaño, estafador y escurridizo, siempre conseguía salirse con la suya. Siempre tuvo la astucia.
Lo único que le faltaba era el detonante, el punto de inflexión que le convertiría por completo en este ser sin escrúpulos, que sólo ambiciona tener dinero. Ese detonante tenía nombre y apellido: Kim" Wexler. Era la que mostraba más sangre fría en muchas ocasiones, era la que amenazaba como un lobo a las ovejas que se cruzaban en el camino, Kim era la que estaba decidida a ejecutar los planes que tenían juntos, aunque los obstáculos estuvieran presentes, pero era ahora o nunca.
La frialdad en la forma de actuar de Saul Goodman era en realidad copiada de Kim. Ella estaba moldeando parte de la personalidad de Saul. Porque como ella le dijo la noche del punto de ruptura: juntos somos veneno.
Cuando trabajaban juntos se convertían en un arma letal y ella tuvo demasiado con lo que le pasó a Howard, una victima que estaba en el lugar y el momento equivocado. La decisión de abandonar a Jimmy fue lo que provocó que utilizara esa armadura llamada Saul Goodman para seguir adelante. El dolor, la ruptura, el ser abandonado, el perder a la mujer que amaba fue fue muy importante en su transformación.
Breaking Bad
Kim was not only the trigger for Saul's creation. At the end of Better Call Saul is that we realize that she, with the decision to leave Jimmy, completely influenced all the events that happened in Breaking Bad. Kim was always there, we just didn't know her or her existence.
Saul appeased his pain by giving free rein to all his projects, in being that colorful lawyer who defended criminals, that way he wanted to appease all the pain of the breakup, of not having by his side the person who gave balance to his life.
If Kim had not left him, many things would have been different. Saul would not have accepted Walter White as a client and Heisenberg would never have ended up meeting Gus. In the last episode, Saul makes it clear to the judge: Walter White would have achieved nothing without Saul Goodman. He would have ended up dead long before, just as Mike told him when he informed him of the investigation conducted on Heisenberg.
In this way, the screenwriters perfectly connected the whole universe, giving more sense to both stories. Better Call Saul was born as a spin off, but for me it is one more extension that complements the bigger story. For me both are on the same level and it is impossible to separate them.
Love
In the end it all comes down to love. Better Saul Call has in the background, behind all the judicial subplots, scams, drug trafficking and death, one of the most beautiful and painful love stories in current TV series.
In one scene of Breaking Bad, Saul tells Walter that love is overrated, something like that, the exact phrase I don't remember well, but it was a total lie. It was a lie told to hide the heartbreak, to try to forget the love of his life.
Indulging in luxuries, having sex with prostitutes and taking dangerous clients, kept him with the fervent adrenaline necessary to not remember her, the only person who knew him completely, who understood him, who was his complement.
Love is also evident in every scene of this series, when a product is made with passion it can only yield incredible results.
Love is a very powerful feeling, it can bring us a lot of happiness, but also cause us pain that will mark our behavior and push us to act in a way, where wrong decisions are made.
Remorse and redemption
Saul's destiny was marked. He himself was the instrument of his destruction. Tired of a dull life, he longed to feel the glory of the past. Despite being discovered by Jeff, he knew how to handle the situation, it was another victory, but he also felt the adrenaline of executing a master plan to steal.
It's hard to change his nature, it would always be that way, just as Chuck told him long ago. Also at this point the call he makes to Kim again serves as a trigger for Saul's bomb to explode.
It makes him act irrationally, making many mistakes that will cost him dearly. Accustomed to cheating on old women, this time he meets a very smart old woman who pays attention to details. Becoming Saul again condemns him forever.
What makes him redeem himself? Kim's name comes up again. She is everything in the series, her importance is too great. When he learns of the civil suit that Howard's wife may bring against Kim, it makes him take one last step, even though he had gotten a good settlement for all the crimes he was accused of, Kim's statement about Howard, makes him realize that she was right when she left him and it's time to make peace with everyone, even if it requires a great sacrifice.
A few glances are enough for us to understand what both characters are thinking. They still love each other, but it is a love that had to be sacrificed so she could build a new life, bland, boring and normal, but she needed to leave the past behind.
For Jimmy - Saul it was time to be brave for once in his life, seeking redemption for all the damage caused directly and indirectly. To say goodbye to Saul and go back to being Jimmy.
Actress Rhea Seehorn has been the great forgotten at the Emmy Awards. She is nominated this year, but she has some very strong competition. I would love for her to win, she deserves it, as recognition for all these years in which she brought to life a character that I and many other fans of the series fell in love with. I'll talk about her chances when I make my predictions for these awards.
I thought the series finale would give me post-series depression, but this time it didn't. I loved the ending and although it is very painful, it is full of beauty, which makes me feel happy with the closure they have given to this universe.
More than a decade since the journey began with Breaking Bad, it has been an unforgettable journey, with characters and plots that make this entire universe two of the best American series in recent years.
Both characters sharing a cigarette as in the first scene we see them interact in the first season. Both finding some peace after a trip to hell. A reunion that sounded like saying goodbye forever, Jimmy doing the firing signals and that general shot showing how separated their worlds will be for life. They are images full of meaning, of impact for those of us who have followed this story from the beginning, visual poetry.
Goodbye Saul, goodbye Kim.
Breaking Bad
Kim no sólo fue el desencadenante de la creación de Saul. Al final de Better Call Saul es que nos damos cuenta que ella, con la decisión de dejar a Jimmy, influyó completamente en todos los eventos que ocurrieron en Breaking Bad. Kim siempre estuvo ahí, sólo que no la conocíamos ni sabíamos de su existencia.
Saul apaciguó su dolor dando rienda suelta a todos sus proyectos, en ser ese abogado pintoresco que defendía a los criminales, de esa manera quería apaciguar todo el dolor de la ruptura, de no tener a su lado a la persona que daba equilibrio a su vida.
Si Kim no le hubiera dejado, muchas cosas habrían sido diferentes. Saul no habría aceptado a Walter White como cliente y Heisenberg nunca habría acabado conociendo a Gus. En el último episodio, Saul se lo deja claro al juez: Walter White no habría conseguido nada sin Saul Goodman. Habría acabado muerto mucho antes, tal y como le dijo Mike cuando le informó de la investigación realizada a Heisenberg.
De esta manera, los guionistas conectaron perfectamente todo el universo, dando más sentido a ambas historias. Better Call Saul nació como un spin off, pero para mí es una extensión más que complementa la historia mayor. Para mí ambas están al mismo nivel y es imposible separarlas.
Amor
Al final todo se reduce al amor. Better Saul Call tiene de fondo, detrás de todas las subtramas judiciales, las estafas, el tráfico de drogas y la muerte, una de las historias de amor más bonitas y dolorosas de las series de televisión actuales.
En una escena de Breaking Bad, Saul le dice a Walter que el amor está sobrevalorado, algo así, la frase exacta no la recuerdo bien, pero era una mentira total. Era una mentira dicha para ocultar el desamor, para intentar olvidar al amor de su vida.
Darse lujos, tener sexo con prostitutas y tomar clientes peligrosos, lo mantenía con la ferviente adrenalina necesaria para no recordarla a ella, la única persona que lo conocía por completo, que lo entendía, que era su complemento.
El amor también se manifiesta en cada escena de esta serie, cuando un producto se hace con pasión sólo puede dar resultados increíbles. El amor es un sentimiento muy poderoso, puede traernos mucha felicidad, pero también causarnos un dolor que marcará nuestro comportamiento y nos empujará a actuar de una manera, donde se toman decisiones equivocadas.
Remordimiento y redención
El destino de Saúl estaba marcado. Él mismo fue el instrumento de su destrucción. Cansado de una vida aburrida, anhelaba sentir la gloria del pasado. A pesar de ser descubierto por Jeff, supo manejar la situación, fue otra victoria, pero también sintió la adrenalina de ejecutar un plan maestro para robar.
Es difícil cambiar su naturaleza, siempre sería así, tal y como le dijo Chuck hace tiempo. También en este punto la llamada que hace a Kim vuelva a servir de detonante para que la bomba de Saul explote.
Le hace actuar de forma irracional, cometiendo muchos errores que le costarán muy caro. Acostumbrado a engañar a las ancianas, esta vez se encuentra con una anciana muy inteligente que se fija en los detalles. Volver a ser Saúl le condena para siempre.
¿Qué le hace redimirse? El nombre de Kim vuelve a aparecer. Ella lo es todo en la serie, su importancia es demasiado grande. Cuando se entera de la demanda civil que la mujer de Howard puede interponer contra Kim, le hace dar un último paso, aunque había conseguido un buen acuerdo por todos los delitos de los que se le acusaba, la declaración de Kim sobre Howard, le hace darse cuenta de que ella tenía razón cuando le dejó y es el momento de hacer las paces con todos, aunque requiera un gran sacrificio.
Unas pocas miradas bastan para que entendamos lo que piensan ambos personajes. Siguen amándose, pero es un amor que tuvo que ser sacrificado para que ella pudiera construir una nueva vida, insípida, aburrida y normal, pero necesitaba dejar atrás el pasado.
Para Jimmy - Saul era el momento de ser valiente por una vez en su vida, buscando redención por todo el daño causado directa e indirectamente. Decir adiós a Saul y volver a ser Jimmy.
La actriz Rhea Seehorn ha sido la gran olvidada en los premios Emmy. Este año está nominada, pero tiene una competencia muy fuerte. Me encantaría que ganara, se lo merece, como reconocimiento a todos estos años en los que dio vida a un personaje que me enamoró a mí y a muchos otros fans de la serie. Ya hablaré de sus posibilidades cuando haga mis predicciones para esos premios.
Pensaba que el final de la serie me daría depresión post-serie, pero esta vez no ha sido así. Me encantó el final y aunque es muy doloroso, está lleno de belleza, lo que me hace sentir feliz con el cierre que le han dado a este universo.
Ambos personajes compartiendo un cigarrillo como en la primera escena que los vemos interactuar en la primera temporada. Ambos encontrando algo de paz después de un viaje al infierno. Un reencuentro que sonó a despedida para siempre, Jimmy haciendo las señales de disparo y ese plano general mostrando lo separados que estarán sus mundos de por vida. Son imágenes llenas de significado, de impacto para los que seguimos esta historia desde el principio, poesía visual.
Adiós Saúl, adiós Kim.
