Bring Her Back

A horror movie I'd been wanting to see since last year was this one: Bring Her Back. Oh my god! I agree with most of the positive reviews. It was definitely one of the best horror movies of last year. I have so many on my list that I'd even forgotten about this one. I remembered it a few days ago, looked it up, and it kept me glued to the screen from beginning to end.

Before going on, I should mention that this is the second film by brothers Danny and Michael Philippou. I really enjoyed their debut, Talk to Me, and by the way, they're already working on a sequel. That movie was a teen horror film, very entertaining and with some great scenes. I already knew these filmmakers had a lot of potential in the genre, because with Bring Her Back, I have to say they've improved tremendously.

I hadn't felt so uneasy during a scene since Hereditary and the scenes with the little girl. They're truly chilling. I felt the same way again, coincidentally in this movie, with the scenes with the boy, Ollie. How disturbing, and that's what I liked most about it. In horror movies, I look for something that makes me uncomfortable, and this one has quite a few scenes that will make many people look away. The child actor is named Jonah Wren Phillips, and with that makeup, he also manages to convey terror in his scenes. The young man is Australian, since the film is a production from that country.

Without revealing the plot, I'll just say that two siblings, after the death of their father, are sent for three months to be cared for by Laura, a former social worker. But she behaves strangely at first. Well, actually, throughout the entire film. Her first scene is chilling, and it's clear that she doesn't like the presence of Andy, Piper's older brother, who is also blind. This woman gave me a bad feeling immediately, and I sensed that something strange was coming, especially when the boy with the psychopathic face appears.

Amidst its supernatural horror story, the theme of loss is also subtly explored, revealing the lengths to which a mother, in a state of denial and madness, is capable of going to try and bring back her loved one. Grief is something that breaks us in a way that can completely shatter our minds. Although everything Laura does is premeditated and horrific, deep down she is a suffering soul, burdened by the weight of that pain, and she will cling to anything that might bring back the happiness she lost long ago.

This is a good story where the setting and unsettling atmosphere are crucial for impacting the viewer, but it also fulfills the requirement of telling an interesting story with greater quality and coherence, within all the supernatural elements it contains. Because every universe, no matter how fantastical it contains, must be consistent with its own narrative.

You can watch the trailer without worry; it doesn't reveal much of the plot. It's a truly great film. One of the best films of its genre from last year, and if you haven't seen it, you're missing out. However, some people might not enjoy it.

Una película de terror que quería ver desde el año pasado era esta: Bring Her Back. ¡Madre mía! Coincido con la mayoría de las críticas positivas. Fue una de las mejores películas de terror del año pasado, sin duda. Tengo tantas en mi lista que incluso me había olvidado de esta. La recordé hace unos días, la busqué y me mantuvo pegado a la pantalla de principio a fin.

Antes de continuar, debo mencionar que esta es la segunda película de los hermanos Danny y Michael Philippou. Me gustó mucho su ópera prima, Talk to Me, y por cierto, ya están trabajando en una secuela. Aquella película era de terror con adolescentes como protagonistas, muy entretenida y con escenas geniales. Ya sabía que estos cineastas prometían mucho en el género, porque con Bring Her Back debo decir que han mejorado muchísimo.

No me había sentido tan incómodo con una escena desde Hereditary y las escenas con la niña. Son realmente escalofriantes. Sentí lo mismo de nuevo, casualmente en esta película, con las escenas del niño Ollie. Qué perturbador, y eso fue lo que más me gustó. En las películas de terror, busco algo que me incomode, y esta tiene bastantes escenas que harán que muchos aparten la vista. El niño actor se llama Jonah Wren Phillips, y con ese maquillaje, también logra transmitir terror en sus escenas. El joven es australiano, ya que la película es una producción de ese país.

Sin revelar la trama, solo diré que dos hermanos, tras la muerte de su padre, son enviados durante tres meses al cuidado de Laura, una ex trabajadora social. Pero ella se comporta de manera extraña al principio. Bueno, en realidad, durante toda la película. Su primera escena es escalofriante, y es evidente que no le agrada la presencia de Andy, el hermano mayor de Piper, que también es ciego. Esta mujer me dio mala espina de inmediato, y sentí que algo raro se avecinaba, especialmente cuando aparece el niño con la cara de psicópata.

En medio de su historia de terror con tintes sobrenaturales, también se esconde el tema de la pérdida, y todo lo que una madre, en un estado de negación y locura, es capaz de hacer para intentar recuperar a su ser querido. El duelo es algo que nos quebramos de una manera que puede perturbar por completo nuestra mente. Aunque todo lo que Laura hace es premeditado y horrible, en el fondo es un ser que sufre, que carga con el peso de ese dolor sobre sus hombros y se aferrará a cualquier cosa que pueda devolverle la felicidad perdida hace mucho tiempo.

Esta es una buena historia donde la ambientación y la atmósfera inquietante son importantes para impactar al espectador, pero también cumple con el requisito de contar una historia interesante con mayor calidad y coherencia, dentro de todos los elementos sobrenaturales que posee. Porque todo universo, por mucha fantasía que contenga, debe ser coherente con su propia narrativa.

Puedes ver el tráiler sin preocupaciones; no revela mucho de la historia. Es una película realmente genial. Una de las mejores películas de su género del año pasado, y si no la has visto, te estás perdiendo una gran película. Sin embargo, puede que haya quienes no la disfruten.
