Echoes of the Past

Having seen much of Daniel de la Vega’s filmography as a director, I believe this is the film I have enjoyed the most. I also liked Soy Tóxico for its post-apocalyptic "gaucho" world, and El Tercer Día for its vampire references. I have already mentioned Ataúd Blanco; he has undoubtedly created an interesting body of work. Although there are recurring elements in his films, I appreciate his creativity in working with the resources available to him.
With Con los Ojos del Abismo, he also tackles a subject that continues to leave scars on many Argentines: the disastrous Falklands War. While the film may not delve deeply into the military conflict itself, I find the way it is integrated into the story's context ingenious; after all, there are things that must not be forgotten and many lies that were covered up. During the war, the country was under a military dictatorship that lied about and manipulated the figures regarding the actual number of casualties in the conflict.
I liked that, as in the filmmaker's other works, we do not know where the story is heading. There are surprises along the way; after a mysterious opening that raises numerous questions, the plot follows a specific course before delivering a couple of plot twists that take us in a completely different direction. Does having a huge budget really matter? What counts is an interesting story that keeps us intrigued.
The entire film takes place on a ship—a rather confined space. From a screenwriting perspective, this was a wise decision; using a single location—especially a confined one—is ideal when a large budget isn't available.
The story’s protagonist is named Inés. She wakes up on a ship where the rest of the crew—apparently members of a humanitarian organization—have died. She remembers nothing. That is all I will say about the film itself; you must discover the rest for yourselves. Who is this woman? What is she doing there? Where is she? Who are the British soldiers boarding the ship? It’s nothing like what you might imagine; I can assure you of that.
Of course, the story contains a fantastical element, and that was the part I liked best. This becomes apparent in a specific scene where you realize something doesn't add up: there are details that don't align with the timelines being shown. Could the ending have been better? Yes, but—damn it—I’m satisfied with what the director achieved. The film kept me hooked; it offered historical context and even included action and graphic violence. I’ve seen some negative reviews, but honestly, those people are either just looking for big commercial blockbusters or they don't really love this.
The filmmakers' passion and mastery of cinematic language are evident. It’s something that’s being lost lately, and Netflix bears some of the blame with all its original productions, where action and themes are always tailored for new generations who watch everything in vertical format. I’ll write a post about this topic later on.
For my part, I highly recommend this excellent Argentine film; if you let yourself get swept up in it without being overly critical, you’ll enjoy the story it tells.
Once you’ve seen it, leave a comment with your thoughts.
No recuerda nada.
