Torrente President

It was in the late nineties that Santiago surely hit the box office with the first Torrente film. The character he created had a huge impact: José Luis Torrente, an ex-cop who embodies everything unpleasant about society. Corrupt, drunk, racist, sexist, dirty, filthy, and of course, very devoted to his homeland, Spain, which gives him the air of being radically far-right. His two great passions are an almost divine devotion to El Fary, a very popular Spanish singer and actor in the eighties, and Atlético de Madrid, a football team with a group of right-wing supporters.

The film was so successful that it soon became a franchise. Torrente 2 followed, which I also found entertaining, and then, over the years, came the third, fourth, and fifth installments. The film's initial success and subsequent reactions can also be seen as a reflection of how Spanish society changed. The first film caused polarization: some loved it, laughing at the reflection of their own society, while others detested it, feeling disgusted by Torrente, perhaps for the same reasons.

Despite this, people enjoyed it. I didn't see it that year. It was a different era, and there were still video rental stores in my city where I rented VHS tapes. It was the year after its release, around '99, that I was able to see the film, and although I'm not from Spain, I understood much of its content, particularly its references to Spanish culture. I found it funny, and I enjoyed the following ones too, although perhaps the later ones became more ambitious, bigger, and had lost some of the magic of the first film.

Spanish society changed over time, and even Santiago Segura changed too; now he's older and thinner. In the early Torrente films, he was jolly because he was fat. Oh, I forgot to mention that Torrente would also be considered fatphobic according to the stigmas of the left. Hahaha. Torrente has always been controversial; I remember one controversy that arose because of a scene where he finds a sleeping woman and has sex with her. Oh! I forgot to mention that Torrente is a born womanizer and doesn't like gay things, although he always wants to masturbate when he's alone with another man in a car. Well, that scene was labeled as an apology for rape.

After Torrente 5 came the apron, although Santiago was sure many agents were always asking when Torrente would return. It was more than ten years without Torrente and it seemed the character would never be seen again, until a photo from the set was leaked and boom. The Spanish left cried out in outrage, the leftists started whining because it turns out that a character created to make fun of the Right became a symbol of the right and loved by many.

Torrente the President was expected to be stronger, but it's very mild. That said, he makes fun of everything. Santiago Segura has declared many times that he is progressive, that he is left-wing, but since he doesn't support everything those crazy people who govern Spain do and promote, they label him a fascist. It's a stigma that leftists always use against anyone who dares to go against their ideas. I know this because I've suffered this stigma in my country, because leftists behave and destroy the same way everywhere.

Despite the whining of these people, Torrente Presidente has been a huge box office success. Santiago Segura is the only filmmaker who is truly profitable in Spanish cinema. He also makes short films and has a franchise called Padre no hay más que uno (Father There Is Only One) which is very successful. That's another thing the Spanish left can't forgive him for: making movies that people pay to see in theaters, always among the biggest box office hits, without needing to be fully financed with Spanish taxpayers' money. Meanwhile, the government finances any nonsense that fuels its shitty ideologies with public funds.

As I was saying, Torrente Presidente makes fun of everyone. Both leftists and right-wingers, except the latter take it well, they laugh at themselves and don't make a fuss. Leftists, on the other hand, see it as an attack, they cry, they get angry, and they even ask for the return of the Inquisition so that Santiago Segura can be burned at the stake. One of the attractions of Torrente Presidente was also the cameos, ranging from politicians and retirees, social media personalities, celebrities, journalists, and even Hollywood stars who are now disgraced.

After watching it, I felt that the scandal and the whining from the left weren't all that big of a deal. It's a comedy with a very political tone, because the current polarization in Spain with its current government is a reality. So there are a lot of Torrentes around these days.

Fue a finales de los noventa cuando Santiago arrasó en taquilla con la primera película de Torrente. El personaje que creó tuvo un impacto enorme: José Luis Torrente, un expolicía que encarna todo lo desagradable de la sociedad. Corrupto, borracho, racista, sexista, sucio, inmundo y, por supuesto, muy devoto de su patria, España, lo que le confiere un aire de ultraderecha radical. Sus dos grandes pasiones son una devoción casi divina por El Fary, un cantante y actor español muy popular en los ochenta, y el Atlético de Madrid, un equipo de fútbol con un grupo de seguidores de derecha.

La película tuvo tanto éxito que pronto se convirtió en una franquicia. Le siguió Torrente 2, que también me pareció entretenida, y luego, con el paso de los años, llegaron la tercera, la cuarta y la quinta entrega. El éxito inicial de la película y las reacciones posteriores también pueden interpretarse como un reflejo de cómo cambió la sociedad española. La primera película generó polarización: a algunos les encantó, riéndose del reflejo de su propia sociedad, mientras que otros la detestaron, sintiendo repulsión por Torrente, quizás por las mismas razones. A pesar de esto, la gente la disfrutó. Yo no la vi ese año. Era otra época, y todavía había videoclubes en mi ciudad donde alquilaba cintas VHS. Fue un año después de su estreno, alrededor del 99, cuando pude ver la película, y aunque no soy de España, entendí gran parte de su contenido, sobre todo sus referencias a la cultura española. Me pareció divertida, y también disfruté de las siguientes, aunque quizás las últimas se volvieron más ambiciosas, más grandes y perdieron algo de la magia de la primera.

La sociedad española cambió con el tiempo, e incluso Santiago Segura cambió también; ahora es mayor y más delgado. En las primeras películas de Torrente, era alegre porque era gordo. Ah, se me olvidaba mencionar que Torrente también sería considerado gordofóbico según los estigmas de la izquierda. Jajaja. Torrente siempre ha sido polémico; recuerdo una polémica que surgió por una escena en la que encuentra a una mujer dormida y tiene sexo con ella. ¡Vaya! Olvidé mencionar que Torrente es un mujeriego nato y no le gustan las cosas homosexuales, aunque siempre quiere masturbarse cuando está a solas con otro hombre en un coche. Bueno, esa escena fue catalogada como una apología de la violación.

Después de Torrente 5 llegó el delantal, aunque Santiago estaba seguro de que muchos agentes siempre preguntaban cuándo regresaría Torrente. Pasaron más de diez años sin Torrente y parecía que el personaje nunca volvería a aparecer, hasta que se filtró una foto del rodaje y ¡boom! La izquierda española gritó indignada, los izquierdistas empezaron a quejarse porque resulta que un personaje creado para burlarse de la derecha se convirtió en un símbolo de la derecha y fue querido por muchos.

Se esperaba que Torrente el Presidente fuera más fuerte, pero es muy suave. Dicho esto, se burla de todo. Santiago Segura ha declarado muchas veces que es progresista, que es de izquierdas, pero como no apoya todo lo que hacen y promueven esos locos que gobiernan España, lo tachan de fascista. Es un estigma que los izquierdistas siempre usan contra cualquiera que se atreva a ir en contra de sus ideas. Lo sé porque lo he sufrido en mi país, porque los izquierdistas se comportan y destruyen de la misma manera en todas partes.

A pesar de las quejas de esta gente, Torrente Presidente ha sido un gran éxito de taquilla. Santiago Segura es el único cineasta que realmente obtiene beneficios en el cine español. También realiza cortometrajes y tiene una franquicia llamada Padre no hay más que uno, que es muy exitosa. Esa es otra cosa que la izquierda española no le perdona: hacer películas que la gente paga por ver en los cines, siempre entre los mayores éxitos de taquilla, sin necesidad de financiarlas íntegramente con el dinero de los contribuyentes españoles. Mientras tanto, el gobierno financia con fondos públicos cualquier tontería que alimente sus ideologías nefastas.

Como decía, Torrente Presidente se burla de todos. Tanto de los izquierdistas como de los derechistas, excepto que estos últimos se lo toman bien, se ríen de sí mismos y no arman un escándalo. Los izquierdistas, por otro lado, lo ven como un ataque, lloran, se enfurecen e incluso piden el regreso de la Inquisición para que Santiago Segura sea quemado en la hoguera. Uno de los atractivos de Torrente Presidente fueron también los cameos, que incluían políticos y jubilados, personalidades de las redes sociales, celebridades, periodistas e incluso estrellas de Hollywood ahora caídas en desgracia.

Después de verla, sentí que el escándalo y las quejas de la izquierda no eran para tanto. Es una comedia con un tono muy político, porque la polarización actual en España con su gobierno es una realidad.Así que últimamente hay muchos Torrentes por ahí.
