Heart of the Beast - Review and Reflection [Esp-Eng]

Yesterday I went to the movies for the first time in a while. The last time I went, I saw a trailer for a movie that was coming out soon—Heart of the Beast. To be completely honest, this movie didn’t catch my attention at first glance because I have a personal rule against watching movies about animals—I always end up crying my eyes out, and to me, they’re always sad.

But some friends convinced me to go see it because they were really excited to enjoy it on the big screen—and that was my first mistake. The truth is, the movie was pretty entertaining, though I have to admit that there were parts where I felt a little anxious. Overall, though, it’s one of those films where you’re on the edge of your seat, wondering what’s going to happen next, expecting something to go wrong at any moment, and hoping it all works out in the end.

​The movie tells the story of James Belmont, a retired soldier who is now trying to lead a quiet life alongside his faithful combat companion, a little German Shepherd named Odin. In this quest to lead a slightly more relaxed life, they spend their time visiting places where they’re surrounded only by peaceful nature—where just the two of them and the tranquility of a completely secluded spot keep them company.

Ayer fui al cine después de un buen tiempo, la última vez que fui vi un tráiler de una película que se estrenaría próximamente y se trataba de En el corazón de la bestia. Si soy muy honesta, esta película no me llamó la atención a simple vista porque tengo una regla mental de no ver películas relacionadas con animales, ya que siempre termino llorando muchísimo y para mí siempre son tristes.

​Pero unos amigos me convencieron de ir a verla porque les hacía muchísima ilusión disfrutarla en el grande y este fue mi primer error. La verdad es que la película fue bastante entretenida, aunque debo admitir que en algunas partes me sentí algo ansiosa, pero en general es de esas producciones en las que estás atento a lo que va a pasar a continuación, pendiente de que algo va a salir mal en cualquier momento y esperando que logre resolverse.

​La película cuenta la historia de James Belmont, un militar retirado que está tratando ahora de tener una vida tranquila junto a su compañero fiel de combate, un perrito pastor alemán llamado Odín. En esta búsqueda de llevar una vida un poco más relajada, se dedican a visitar lugares en los que lo único que los rodea es la pacífica naturaleza, donde solo ellos dos y la tranquilidad de un sitio totalmente solitario los acompaña.

But on this latest trip—when it seemed to be just another journey during which they’d both recharged their batteries to get back to their routine—things don’t go as planned. A completely unexpected event leaves them in the middle of nowhere, without any supplies and unable to handle the situation properly, making every minute they spend together fighting for their lives count.

​As I said at the beginning, my mistake was starting to watch this movie. I have to admit that, although it isn’t as overwhelmingly sad as other animal stories I’ve seen, it was still quite heartbreaking at times, and I cried a lot in the movie theater. Even so, I can say it’s a very beautiful film with a message that, honestly, made me want to run home to hug my kittens.

​There are several things that stuck with me from this movie, starting with the fact that having a companion—even if it’s a four-legged one—can completely change things for a person. The way a dog, a cat, or a pet can have such a profound impact on your mental health and how you cope with life strikes me as something truly beautiful, and although many people don’t see animals in this same light, the truth is that, from my perspective, they are beings that greatly brighten our lives.

​Pero en este último viaje, cuando ya parecía haber sido una travesía como cualquiera en la que ambos habían recargado energías para continuar con su rutina, las cosas no salen como esperan. Un suceso súper inesperado los deja en el medio de la nada, sin todas sus provisiones y sin tener las capacidades para resolver bien la situación, haciendo que cada minuto juntos luchando por su vida cuente.

​Como dije al principio, mi error fue comenzar a ver esta película. Debo admitir que, aunque no es tan excesivamente triste como otras historias de animales que he visto, igual fue bastante dolorosa en algunos puntos y lloré un montón en la sala de cine. Aun así, puedo decir que es un filme muy bonito y con un mensaje que honestamente a mí me hizo querer ir a casa corriendo para abrazar a mis gatitos.

​Hay varias cosas que me quedaron de esta película, empezando por el hecho de que el tener un compañero, aunque este sea de cuatro patas, puede cambiar totalmente las cosas para una persona. La forma en la que un perro, un gato o una mascota puede influir tanto en tu salud mental y en cómo sobrellevas la vida me parece algo demasiado hermoso, y aunque muchos no ven a los animales con estos mismos ojos, la verdad es que desde mi punto de vista ellos son seres que alegran en gran manera nuestra existencia.

On the other hand, having them brings out the best in us and even helps us grow as human beings. A while back, a good friend told me that when we have a pet, we learn to develop qualities we don’t naturally possess—like empathy, for example—because you need a lot of it to understand what someone needs when they can’t ask for it in words, and to want with all your might to help the one who depends on you. The truth is that this movie brought that memory back to me clearly because I could see it in every scene.

It’s a very moving film in which two beings who have suffered immensely find each other and cling to one another. Somehow, even though they don’t speak the same language, they understand each other perfectly and love each other unconditionally. At every turn, I thought I could somehow predict how it would end, but I really couldn’t. I must say that the cinematography creates a wonderful visual atmosphere, with a natural color palette and landscapes so vast and desolate that they convey that same sense of isolation—and perhaps that’s why I felt a little desperate. In the end, the one thing I wasn’t wrong about is that it left me crying for longer than I should have.

But if you love movies where you can witness the unconditional love a pet feels for its owner and the deep affection a human comes to develop for their faithful companion, then this story is definitely for you—though you’ll probably cry a little while watching it, or, as in my case, quite a bit. I have to say that the acting was excellent, and I give the entire visual presentation a ten for those spectacular landscapes shown on screen.

​Por otro lado, tenerlos saca lo mejor de nosotros y nos ayuda incluso a mejorar como seres humanos. Hace tiempo un buen amigo me dijo que cuando tenemos una mascota aprendemos a desarrollar cualidades que no tenemos naturalmente, por ejemplo la empatía, porque tienes que tener mucha para entender lo que necesita alguien que no puede pedírtelo con palabras y desear con todas tus fuerzas ayudar a quien depende de ti. La verdad es que en esta película recordé eso claramente porque en cada escena pude presenciarlo.

​Es una peli bastante emotiva en la que definitivamente dos seres que han sufrido muchísimo se encuentran y se aferran el uno al otro. De algún modo, aunque no hablan el mismo idioma, se entienden perfectamente y se quieren incondicionalmente. En cada parte yo de algún modo creí predecir como terminaría, pero la verdad no. Debo decir que la dirección de fotografía logra una atmósfera visual muy buena, con una paleta de colores natural y unos paisajes tan inmensos y solitarios que te transmiten esa misma sensación de aislamiento, y quizá por eso yo me desesperé un poco, al final en lo que no me equivoqué es que me dejó llorando por más tiempo del que debía.

​Pero si amas las películas en las que puedes presenciar el amor incondicional que siente una mascota por su amo y el afecto tan fuerte que un humano llega a desarrollar por su fiel compañero, entonces esta es una historia totalmente para ti, aunque seguramente al verla vas a llorar un poquito o, como en mi caso, bastante. Debo decir que la actuación fue muy buena y le doy un diez a toda la propuesta visual por esos paisajes espectaculares que se mostraron en pantalla.
