Hello everyone in the Scrobble.life community! Today I want to share my thoughts on the new Carrie series. I have to tell you that I'm halfway through the last episode—I haven't completely finished it yet—but honestly, I've really been enjoying the series.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of Mike Flanagan. He is a director I've been following for about five years now, and for me, every series he releases is a total gem. The first one I watched was The Haunting of Hill House, and from then on I started watching the others and fell completely in love with his work. That's why I was so excited and intrigued to see how this story of Carrie was going to develop. I've already seen several movie adaptations, and I'm not saying they're bad—obviously they aren't identical to the book—but each one has its own details and explores Carrie's world in its own way. I was very curious to see what approach they would take.

To give you a quick synopsis, in this story our main character is Carrie White, a girl who has spent her entire life at home with her mother and father, practically isolated and excluded from the outside world. Carrie comes from an extremely religious family—the kind that takes everything to the absolute extreme. Things start to get really weird when she begins to show telekinetic abilities, which she only starts to realize she has once she enters high school. From that point on, the contrast between her sheltered life with her parents and the clash with the teenage world sets off the entire plot of the series.

The series presents a different, quite fresh premise, while still keeping the original essence. It is not 100% like the book, it really isn't, but I was very impressed by how they played with the story and combined various factors to bring it into modern times.

What I really liked was how they combined the classic plot with cyberbullying and school harassment. We all know that Carrie was put through a lot of pain in the story, but connecting that with technology and social media gave it a very real touch. I'm not saying social media is bad on its own, but how it can be used in a negative way can ruin a person's life. It was a great and interesting decision to watch.

Moving on to my thoughts on the characters, I really like Carrie; she's pretty and strange, although I still have a small issue with her portrayal because I expected a little bit more. I know that in the book, Carrie White was not attractive at all, but rather a physically very different girl. In the series, they chose a very pretty actress. Even though she acts really well and captures that awkwardness, I would have preferred if they had stuck to the original narrative of her being an unattractive girl so that the bullying and all that pent-up rage would have had an even greater impact.

Still, I can understand that they wanted to frame her as simply a strange girl coming from a fanatically religious family. What did surprise me quite a bit was that they decided to explore the stories of other characters who also possessed special abilities, giving the plot a very striking twist.

Sue felt like quite an interesting character to me. She is a very studious girl and a good person, but her friendship with Chris was not a good influence. Sue is very gentle and noble, but she lets herself be heavily manipulated by Chris's decisions; sometimes she would laugh or make comments she knew were wrong just due to peer pressure.

Over time, Sue realizes that Christine's actions had completely crossed the line. The situation escalated to an exorbitant level of harassment and violence toward her classmate and the other students. Sue tried to make Chris see reason, offering her support and telling her that what she was doing was wrong, but Chris simply shut her down and chose to push forward with her revenge.

Tina was part of the popular group, hanging out with Christine and Sue. At first, I found her quite pedantic, and I really disliked her because her attitude seemed designed just to get Christine to notice her. Things like secretly recording classmates to send them to the "Carrie Ray" account—which Cris ran—to make cruel memes didn't sit well with me at all.

She was one of the ones who filmed Carrie on the first day of class when she got her first period, laughing and humiliating her. It was so unpleasant that I couldn't feel any empathy for her. In the end, even though she seems to realize that everything she was doing was wrong and tries to change to support Carrie, I feel like the change was very minimal and late, so honestly, I don't care about her.

Now let's talk about Christine. Honestly, I hated her and I still do. Along with her parents and Carrie's mother, she's right at the top of the people I hate the most. Christine felt like the most unpleasant character of all, the absolute villain and the cruelest one. A spoiled, egocentric, and narcissistic girl who took out her anger and family problems on others. Seeing Carrie, who was so noble and new just trying to fit in, she attacked her in a vile way without any justification. At 18 years old, she knew perfectly well what she was doing was wrong, and yet she got mad at people who didn't support her.

And her family is the clear example that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Christine's mom felt unbearable to me, especially when she sat next to Carrie's mother to show her a picture of when Christine was six years old, asking her not to ruin her life. Please! We are talking about an 18-year-old who committed atrocious acts and has to pay for them; she ruined her own life all by herself. And the dad... a pedantic and repulsive lawyer who handled covering up all the "pranks" and evil things Christine did at other schools using his money. She thought this time she wouldn't face consequences either—well, girlfriend, turns out she did!

Speaking of Carrie's mother, I can understand that religion is important, but she was an extremist and a fanatic taken to a total absurd. The father believed in conspiracy theories and rejected medicine, reflecting all of that onto their daughter's life. Carrie grew up unable to play, enjoy herself, or talk to anyone because to her mother, everything was wrong. Locking your daughter in a closet for hours as a punishment to "ask God for forgiveness" felt appalling to me—the absolute worst. When Carrie goes to school and starts socializing, her mom thought it was terrible, failing to understand that her daughter was growing up and had the right to build her own life.

The final blow was finding out that the mom also had telekinetic powers, but suppressed them due to her faith, believing they were demonic, and forcing her daughter to suffer the same fate. I cannot feel any empathy for her; Carrie ended up being the noble victim of a group of deeply cruel people. Fuente

Fuente

Finally, talking about Amelie, the girl who talked to Carrie, it really surprised me because she would literally appear and disappear, making Carrie think she was crazy.

I don't know if they'll release a second season, but I'd love to see it. As a strict adaptation of the book it changes many things, but if you see it as an independent series that took inspiration from the Carrie story, it works very well. It's something new, fresh, and a lot of fun to watch. I liked it a lot and thought it was a super interesting series. Even though I have just a few minutes left to finish the final episode, I'm completely satisfied with it. That's all for today in this post! I hope you liked it, let me know what you thought and if you've already seen the series. See you in the comments!

I think Mike Flanagan did really a good job with this series taking it in modern time without made it too trash or boring.
