Hello to the entire Scrobble.life community! I'm back here to share my thoughts on a movie I watched a while ago that I found really good and interesting: Black Swan. It is a movie filled with drama, psychological suspense, and mystery. I am very drawn to these kinds of movies because they keep you hooked from start to finish.
This story touched me in a special way because when I was little, I was a dancer. Although I didn't stay in dance for very long, I did experience firsthand how demanding and disciplined this world is. I have always admired the dedication and effort it requires, but I feel that in classical ballet, all of this is taken to a much more extreme level.
Black Swan felt like a fascinating story to me, exposing a reality that many people often deny regarding the pursuit of perfection. It is a great movie to watch, reflect on, and discuss what it conveys.
The premise introduces us to Nina Sayers, a ballet dancer who trains very, very hard to become the lead in Swan Lake. However, in her effort to push herself and give her all, Nina begins to completely lose her sense of reality and judgment. All this pressure affects her psyche, and things get worse when a new dancer arrives and Nina feels she is threatening to take the lead role she wants so badly. From this moment on, everything becomes very dark, revealing her deepest fears and showing how the people around her also have quite dark sides.
Honestly, I found the movie to be very good and very interesting. These types of plots are usually quite appealing to the audience, and it certainly was for me. The production was very well done; director Darren Aronofsky is one of the best I've seen because every movie of his surprises me, always having that dramatic and psychological touch that really catches my attention.
Speaking about the story, I find it fascinating. It is set in a professional ballet academy and shows us the real world of dance. They show a reality that many deny: the pursuit of perfection. And this goes beyond ballet. I know people who have suffered from eating disorders, mental health issues, and struggles to socialize because of these pressures. In professional ballet, there is fierce competition—that need to always be the best in class, the most dedicated, and the one landing the best roles. Even if it looks like a very cute, elegant, and rosy world, it has a very strong, competitive, and highly toxic darkness.
I think the movie shows quite well how the search for absolute perfection can destroy you from the inside out or from the outside in; there is no specific order for the destruction of your mind and body. This endless drive to be the best no matter what is very tough.
Speaking of the characters, Nina's mother was a character I couldn't stand; I really disliked her. As you get to know her, you realize she is a frustrated woman who couldn't pursue her dreams in ballet. Because of this, Nina has to deal with all these problems since her mother is obsessed with this world and wants to achieve her dreams through her daughter. It's as if she took over her life, treating her daughter as an extension of herself. She becomes extremely toxic, with extreme perfectionism around food, constant pressure, and manipulation. On top of that, she infantiles and minimizes Nina all the time when she is already a young woman capable of making her own decisions. Treating her like that felt quite cruel to me.
The character of Thomas, the director, felt very unpleasant to me. Clearly he is in charge of the whole show, but the way he manipulated Nina was very repulsive. He practically implied that she had to be intimate with him or give in to get the role or be his favorite artist.
It feels horrible to watch a man in a position of power take advantage of the dreams and aspirations of young women in a world that is already difficult enough. Instead of helping her grow, he just used his power to manipulate her and push past her boundaries.
I feel the entire plot revolves around that: searching for perfection and how certain circumstances lead us to make very tough decisions, pressured by people in power who take advantage of your goals. Nina is surrounded by people who do her no good, and this increases her distrust and envy toward new dancers.
I feel she spirals into a very strong paranoia; she feels everyone is against her and targeting her. The movie's director handles this with quite disturbing and intense scenes. It shows us that even though dance is beautiful, Nina's life falls into very dark circumstances due to the pressure from her environment, family, and peers. All of this completely destroys her mind and body, and sadly, in the end, she couldn't escape from it.
In conclusion, it's an excellent movie that leaves us with a lot to think about.
