Hello to the entire Scrobble.life community! I’m back here to tell you about a movie I’ve already seen twice. I recently watched it again because I needed to refresh my memory of the story a bit and analyze it once more, since it touches on very important topics that can spark a great debate. I wanted to dedicate this post to explaining why I liked it so much, because I think it conveys a message and a fundamental lesson for today’s society. I really hope you enjoy my post.
Let’s start with the synopsis. The story is about our protagonist, Danni Sanders, a woman in her twenties who works at a publishing company that handles magazines, influencers, and artists. She’s just an editor, but she aspires to be more—she wants to be popular—and so she starts making some pretty bad and misguided decisions just to fit in.
From this point on, the plot takes a slightly darker turn. To fit into that world and attract the attention of Colin, a very famous influencer within the company, Danni decides to make up a story that she went to France for a writers’ and editors’ exchange program. However, it turns out that on the very day she was supposedly in France, a real terrorist attack takes place, so the whole situation gets incredibly complicated from there on.
Spoiler Alert!!
I feel it’s essential to talk about this movie because of the powerful message it conveys, although I must confess that I found the main character to be a terrible person. I tried to feel empathy for Danni at some point, but it was completely impossible for me. Not only did she make a serious mistake right from the start, but when she had the chance to redeem herself and tell the truth, she chose to let the situation snowball even further. It had been a very long time since I’d hated a character this much—let alone a protagonist.
When she finds out from the news that the attack took place in the very same places where she supposedly had been walking, she doesn’t know how to handle the situation. But instead of admitting the truth, she decides to keep up the charade because she knows this makes her the “victim” of a tragic event—something that in no way makes her a martyr. She begins to shamelessly exploit the tragedy, gains thousands of followers, becomes super famous, and people start calling her “the survivor.”
What made me the angriest and most repulsed as I watched her was her attitude. She acted as if nothing had happened: painting her nails, speaking in a super snobby way, and enjoying her newfound popularity. People who actually survive a terrorist attack or situations of extreme violence are left with deep trauma or that famous “thousand-yard stare.” Seeing Danni act so normally and nonchalantly while profiting from others’ pain didn’t inspire even a second of empathy in me—only deep disgust at how she exploited such a sensitive issue for her own gain.
I think that’s why I enjoy analyzing this movie so much—because it tackles an extremely popular and timely topic: content creators. The term “influencer” should be reserved for someone who has a positive impact on the lives of others, but these days we see thousands of so-called “influencers” giving self-serving advice that can ruin people’s lives. That’s why the title Fake Influencer fits Danni like a glove. She represents the worst of this world: someone capable of exploiting others’ pain and a real tragedy for the sole purpose of becoming popular, gaining views, and gaining recognition—which strikes me as incredibly cruel.
While watching the movie, I was literally yelling at the screen for her to tell the truth and admit her mistake. Every time I saw even the slightest hint of remorse in her eyes and thought, “Okay, she’s going to confess now,” she simply didn’t. She preferred to stick with the lie because, deep down, she didn’t care about the harm she caused—only her own gain.
The outrage intensifies even more when Rowan enters the scene—a true survivor of a school shooting in which she lost her sister. Rowan is a girl who was deeply traumatized, with extremely severe psychological consequences; any loud noise or fireworks cause her to break down. Danni decides to join the support group where Rowan and other victims are trying to heal, but her behavior within the group was disastrous.
It made me incredibly angry to see people sharing their deepest pain while Danni’s face looked completely normal. The saddest part is that the people in the group justified her coldness by thinking, “Well, that’s just her way of processing the trauma.” Danni callously toyed with the feelings of broken people; although she felt a twinge of remorse at times, instead of stopping and apologizing, she chose to continue feeding off the tragedy of others.
That part with Rowan really bothered me. I identified with Danni’s coworker, who from the start was suspicious and had complete doubts about her because the deception was obvious. Someone who goes through a traumatic event involving bombs, injuries, and deaths doesn’t go around smiling, dancing, buying clothes, and taking photos for Instagram as if nothing happened. She should be in therapy dealing with severe trauma, but Danni showed absolutely none of that; her lack of empathy for others’ pain was outrageous. Danni is the exact embodiment of those real-life influencers on TikTok or YouTube who make disastrous decisions, play fast and loose with sensitive topics, and provoke that same anger in their audience. This film tackles that reality in a very cruel and raw—yet utterly necessary—way, demonstrating that even though it has comedic elements, it addresses a problem that should never be taken lightly.
The most shocking part when the truth comes out is that she didn’t even have the initiative to confess of her own accord. Only when Rowan breaks down again and Danni sees the real suffering up close does she begin to understand the damage she’s caused—but by then it was already too late. Rowan believed they shared the same pain and saw her as a source of support and a good friend, while Danni simply toyed with her feelings in a despicable way. It took her coworker stepping in to give her an ultimatum (“either you tell the truth, or I will”) for Danni to finally post her confession.
From that point on, a massive wave of harassment, callouts, and death threats erupted. While I don’t condone violence, it’s an unavoidable reality in the digital world: when you’re a public figure and you exploit others’ pain in a harmful way, the hate will come crashing down on you because people won’t tolerate someone playing the victim after the damage they’ve caused. Personally, I couldn’t muster even a shred of empathy or pity for her; I felt that the consequences and the public’s reaction were the direct result of her horrible actions.
When the truth came out, the scandal not only destroyed Danni’s life and her relationship with Rowan, but it also crushed her entire family. Her father lost his job because people thought he was helping her fabricate the lie to profit from it, and her mother lost her friends. The film powerfully shows us how a selfish and irresponsible decision made online can spread, explode, and destroy your life and the lives of the people you love most. It’s a raw reflection of what we see every day on social media and a lesson we should all reflect on.
Therefore, I find this movie extremely interesting. I truly enjoyed watching it, although I confess I got incredibly angry and even felt my blood pressure rising from all the times I yelled at the TV. However, it was necessary to watch it because the message is powerful and very clear: we cannot play games or make decisions at the expense of others’ pain.
Every action has a reaction, just as the famous law of physics states. We can’t expect to cause harm and assume it won’t come back to us; life is like a boomerang—for better or for worse, everything always comes back—and that’s exactly what happened to Danni. She caused terrible harm, toyed with something sacred, and, much to her regret, the consequences came back to her multiplied.
It’s a rather complex issue, but one that’s essential to discuss today. We must understand that when we express ourselves online or become content creators, our words and actions directly impact other people’s lives. We must take that responsibility seriously and with maturity. Falsa Influencer is a movie I highly recommend because it sparks a fantastic debate. I sincerely hope you enjoyed this analysis and review. See you next time
