This is a review about this movie I watched recently “Not Okay”.
Not Okay is a 2022 comedy-drama, written and directed by Quinn Shephard. It revolves around a female adult, Danni Sanders ( played by Zoey Deutch).
At the beginning of the movie, it shows us how alone, aimless and point blank friendless Danni was. Did I forget to add “Danni’s social life was messed up”? Well, yeah I think people didn’t like her so much because of something in particular that happened on social media or in real life
Unfortunately, It wasn’t made known what happened that brought all the hate to her at the beginning of the movie.
She was made fun of, humiliated, ignored and at the brink of losing her job.
With these descriptions, you’d think of Danni to be going through a phase of depression and sadness. Yes, yes she was. Sometimes she gave off this “I don’t care what you think about me” vibe which is pretty cool but it just makes the whole point of it so sad.
Anyways, Danni liked this famous social media influencer who works in the company she’s in but has never noticed her, Colin. Some sad stuff. Until one day, when she bumps into him outside of work. She stammers and lies about going to Paris for a writer’s retreat. Crazy
This lie turned into a “lie”. From faking photos of her being in Paris and posting them on social media to lying she experienced a chaotic bomb blast. Totally speaking from my opinion, if I was asked to rate Colin out of ten, I’d give him a three cause what the actual hell?. The fact that this Collin character was played by Dylan O’Brien who played Stiles Stilinski in the series “Teen wolf”, just ruined the whole image I had of him in my head, I’m sorry.
Okay so enough of Colin. This got her ‘social media’ famous to say the least. People went from hating Danni to admiring and loving the “Brave and damaged bomb survivor”. To say she took advantage of this is an understatement. She fed off people’s pain to make her name big. This wasn’t nice. Let’s not even talk about the emotional attachment she created and destroyed between her and Rowan Aldren (played by Mia Isaac)
Bomb survivors go through a lot starting from the risk of developing PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) to TBI (Traumatic Brain injury). Common conditions a bomb survivor may experience include depression, hyper-vigilance, numbness, guilt, etc. Some people also show resilience (i.e., the ability to cope or recover well in or from difficult situations). Flashing lights and loud sounds can trigger the recovery of a bomb survivor.
This movie also circulates around the effects of social media. We all agree life doesn’t just end on social media. Yes, it serves as an escape from the real world but let’s knows this, whatever’s texted or tweeted out there for the public to see is, it’s out there. There’s no going back. Danni lied to her fans. That’s a straight on “NO”. Most of these fans followed her because they related to her and some cause of her said “braveness” and ability to recover so quickly after going through a life- changing bomb explosion. She got engagement on her social media contents, got promoted in the place she got in and got gigs on shows that involved her saying motivational speeches.
Not Okay is actually a very nice movie. It goes from acknowledging the effects of social media to reaching out to its viewers emotionally, in a way. One of my favourite quotes gotten from the movie was said by a character, Rowan. “If you’re not okay, that’s okay”. Mental health issue is a real thing and the lots of us needs to start acknowledging it as real too.

Hoy nuevamente es momento de romper los esquemas de una verdad que va más allá de la que visualizamos a simple vista. ¿Cuál es el ritmo? Bueno, en este punto no deseo darle el título de reina a la protagonista de esta película.
How far is a human being capable of going just for ambition? Today again it is time to break the schemes of a truth that goes beyond what we visualize at first sight. What is the rhythm? Well, at this point I do not wish to give the title of queen to the protagonist of this film.
¿Es ella un fraude? Puede que su composición sea una que nos deje abrumados, pero no solo eso, más bien, la comedia y el drama se mezclan para ponerte a reflexionar. ¿Una producción que esperaba? Sí, y la razón es que la estafa siempre es un punto de análisis para mí y este pequeño blog.
Is she a fraud? Her composition may be one that leaves us underwhelmed, but not only that, rather, comedy and drama mix to get you thinking. A production I was expecting? Yes, and the reason is that the con is always a point of analysis for me and this little blog.
El timador de Tinder, Inventing Anna, Ocean's 8 y el propio K-drama Anna son alguno de los que han tocado mi interés y he escrito sobre ellas. El tiempo es como una oleada que nosotros percibimos, pero a la misma vez sentimos y refleja que este tipo de acciones por personas que son capaces de engañar son equívocas o contrarias.
The Tinder scammer, Inventing Anna, Ocean's 8 and K-drama Anna itself are some of those that have touched my interest and I have written about them. Time is like a wave that we perceive, but at the same time feel and reflect that these kinds of actions by people who are capable of deceit are equivocal or contrary.
¿Parece extraño? El párrafo que precede tiene un punto en común y es: Que todas las producciones tienen o poseen a una persona que es capaz de todo. ¿Cuál es ese todo? Uno que le permita generar y consolidar ese mundo imaginativo de bienestar. ¿Qué es el bienestar? Al parecer esto es un concepto distinto para cada ser humano, pero algo que puedo afirmar con exhaustividad, es el hecho unánime de que nada puede variar cuando se construye en falsedad.
Does it seem strange? The preceding paragraph has one point in common and that is: That all productions have or possess a person who is capable of everything. What is that everything? One that allows him to generate and consolidate that imaginative world of well-being. What is well-being? Apparently this is a different concept for each human being, but something that I can affirm with exhaustiveness, is the unanimous fact that nothing can vary when it is constructed in falsehood.
Ella desea conquistar a alguien, ella desea ser mirada por todos y ella desea construir una falacia que se pueda concebir como una verdad inminente, ¿populismo? Gratamente, al parecer esta palabra es la adecuada para definir lo que ella desea alcanzar, que es una simple: Popularidad entre las masas. ¿Carisma? Quién sabe si ella lo posee, no obstante, algo que queda claro es que efectuará todo lo que pueda para hacer suya la atención.
She wishes to conquer someone, she wishes to be looked at by everyone and she wishes to build a fallacy that can be conceived as an imminent truth, populism? Pleasantly, it seems that this word is the right one to define what she wishes to achieve, which is a simple one: Popularity among the masses. Charisma? Who knows if she possesses it, however, one thing that is clear is that she will do whatever she can to make the attention her own.
En este punto quiero acotar algo importantísimo, no iba a ver esta película todavía, pero fui a leer una que otra opinión en filmaffinity y además de hacer hincapié en la valoración, ¿por qué no la iba a ver aun? Sencillo quería disfrutar de un Thriller, sin embargo, veré uno luego de publicar esta reseña. Recapitulo, ella es alguien normal, una simple mujer que refleja que lo indistinto está en manos de aquellos que no desean ver, ¿quiénes no quieren ver? Aquellos que se mienten en las redes sociales.
At this point I want to point out something very important, I wasn't going to see this movie yet, but I went to read some reviews on filmaffinity and besides emphasizing the rating, why I wasn't going to see it yet? Simple I wanted to enjoy a Thriller, however, I will see one after posting this review. I recap, she is someone normal, a simple woman who reflects that the indistinct is in the hands of those who don't want to see, who don't want to see? Those who lie to each other on social media.
Esta película deja un mensaje abrumador, y no es uno básico, es una composición que genera un diminutivo a las redes sociales. ¿Abrumador? Sí, estamos en un mundo globalizado en donde las tecnologías de comunicación e información son elementales para mantener los procesos, pero en razón de esto se puede visualizar algo enfático y es como un ser humano sumergido en el dolor o depresión puede buscar una alternativa para engañar a todos. ¿Acaso las redes sociales son un manantial de lo verdadero? Pues la realidad es que no, existe mucho en las redes sociales, por ejemplo Instagram que es la más utilizada por la protagonista, la cual le sirve como medio para manipular a las masas.
This film leaves an overwhelming message, and it is not a basic one, it is a composition that generates a diminutive to social networks. Overwhelming? Yes, we are in a globalized world where communication and information technologies are elementary to maintain the processes, but because of this we can visualize something emphatic and it is how a human being submerged in pain or depression can look for an alternative to deceive everyone. Are social networks a source of truth? Well, the reality is that no, there is much in social networks, for example Instagram which is the most used by the protagonist, which serves as a means to manipulate the masses.
¿Quién se burla de quién? Al parecer, la estafa se materializa según criterios distintos en cada país, ¿influencers? Al parecer un estado de letargo que compone o mueve emociones, es que su carisma parece a la de una campaña electoral.
Who is making fun of whom? Apparently, the scam materializes according to different criteria in each country, influencers? Apparently a state of lethargy that composes or moves emotions, is that their charisma resembles that of an election campaign.
¡Estoy en Francia!, pero la realidad es que ella utilizó Adobe Photoshop para falsear las imágenes y crear una perspectiva visual por sus redes sociales, ¿adivinen quien efectúa tal acción manipulativa? Ella que decía estar partida en pedazos.
I'm in France, but the reality is that she used Adobe Photoshop to fake the images and create a visual perspective for her social networks, guess who performs such manipulative action? She who claimed to be broken into pieces.
La película al principio te deja un poco confundido, sentí que debía dejarla de ver; porque no me atrapaba; sin embargo, existía algo que me atraía y me hacía reír levemente. Aparte de esto, también veía con añoranza el hecho unánime en qué punto se partiría todo a pedazos. Voy a ser sincero, las películas con un esquema muy juvenil incomprendido, no son mi atractivo, pero esta tenía algo que me envolvió, ¿qué me envolvió? El carisma.
The movie at first leaves you a bit confused, I felt I should stop watching it; because it didn't grab me; however, there was something that attracted me and made me laugh slightly. Aside from this, I also looked longingly at the unanimous fact at what point it would all fall apart. I'll be honest, movies with a very juvenile misunderstood scheme, are not my appeal, but this one had something about it that enveloped me, what enveloped me? The charisma.
No existe nada más toxico, que la manipulación y los sesgos en las redes sociales. Esto es algo que pasa inclusive en las naciones más desarrolladas y en los mercados fronteras más irrelevantes, pero la razón es que: Las personas vierten sus frustraciones y terminan tergiversando el hecho comunicacional. Ver esta película es un punto de partida para entender cómo se debe hacer lo correcto o idóneo.
There is nothing more toxic than manipulation and bias in social networks. This is something that happens even in the most developed nations and in the most irrelevant frontier markets, but the reason is that people vent their frustrations and end up distorting the communication fact: People pour out their frustrations and end up misrepresenting the communicational fact. Watching this movie is a starting point to understand how to do the right thing.
Una mentira, una frase mal dicha y un padecimiento humano se pueden convertir en la burla de otros o inclusive en la razón para pisotear la vida de un ser humano hasta el punto más deplorable de todo, esto lo puede ver en este film.
A lie, a misspoken phrase and a human suffering can become the mockery of others or even the reason to trample the life of a human being to the most deplorable point of all, this you can see in this film.
Las redes sociales son un medio, uno para conectarse de forma positiva, no obstante, la película visualiza y desprende lo que pasa cuando se utilizan de manera equivocada. ¿A qué me refiero? Simplemente, a los hechos que tergiversan todo cuando mientes, una mentira de lo que no era, se puede convertir en algo que no puedas soportar debido a que estás sometido al escarnio público y lo que ambicionabas se convirtió en la peor pesadilla.
Social networks are a means, one to connect in a positive way, nevertheless, the film visualizes and detaches what happens when they are used in the wrong way. What do I mean? Simply, to the facts that twist everything when you lie, a lie of what was not, can become something you can not stand because you are subjected to public scorn and what you had ambitions became the worst nightmare.
¿Hasta qué punto pueden escalar las mentiras? Hasta arrebatarte todo lo que construiste en cognición de ella, por eso debe mantenerse la prudencia y sobre todas las cosas se debe ser responsable al utilizarlas. Los mensajes de la película van desde el hecho de que tu dolor no te da la razón para engañar a los demás, jugar con la amistad de otra persona y menos aprovecharte de un hecho abominable para tu bienestar.
How far can lies escalate? To the point of snatching away everything you have built up in cognition of it, that is why caution must be maintained and above all things you must be responsible when using them. The messages of the film range from the fact that your pain does not give you the reason to deceive others, to play with the friendship of another person and even less to take advantage of an abominable fact for your well-being.
Danni Sanders, una persona al margen del entorno social y visualizada por los demás como alguien precaria tejerá con sus manos y un computador, una mentira que llegará a los medios de comunicación más importantes de EEUU gracias a las redes sociales que compaginan la preeminencia de su avaricia de ser alguien importante para los demás o que pueda llamar la atención de las cámaras.
Danni Sanders, a person on the margins of the social environment and visualized by others as someone precarious will weave with her hands and a computer, a lie that will reach the most important media in the USA thanks to the social networks that combine the preeminence of her greed to be someone important to others or who can draw the attention of the cameras.
Lo verdadero perdura en el tiempo y lo falso se cae a pedazos de una forma abrumadora que nadie puede evitar, ¿en qué punto ella podrá entender que nada es para siempre? El universo paralelo que ella creará y hará ver a los demás es solamente un desmán improporcionado que causa un detrimento absoluto a su familia, en su entorno laboral y a la única persona que le tendió una mano amiga de verdad.
The true endures over time and the false falls apart in an overwhelming way that no one can avoid, at what point will she be able to understand that nothing is forever? The parallel universe she will create and make others see is only an unproportionate outrage that causes absolute detriment to her family, to her work environment and to the only person who extended a true helping hand to her.
Todo sale a la luz y nadie lo puede evitar, es que evitarlo es explícitamente inexacto, las lágrimas de felicidad puede que se conviertan en angustia, mientras en esta trama nos burlamos de las redes sociales convencionales donde reinan todo tipo de emociones humanas.
Everything comes to light and no one can avoid it, it is that avoiding it is explicitly inaccurate, tears of happiness may turn into anguish, while in this plot we make fun of conventional social networks where all kinds of human emotions reign.
Al principio pensé que me arrepentiría de ver esta producción, pero me envolvió y decidí escribir sobre ella por su trama. El reflejo de como los seres humanos nos comportamos por algo tan débil nos hace ver de una manera simple que vivimos rodeados de personas susceptibles que no pueden ver o ir más allá de una mera sonrisa.
At first I thought I would regret watching this production, but I got involved and decided to write about it because of its plot. The reflection of how human beings behave because of something so weak makes us see in a simple way that we live surrounded by susceptible people who cannot see or go beyond a mere smile.
Lo que una persona asevera en una red social no es explícitamente lo verdadero, lo verdadero es lo que se puede comprobar con hechos o pruebas irrefutables. Existen muchos patrones conductuales, y me pongo a reflexionar antes de culminar sobre un término esbozado en la producción: Sociópata, uno que le atribuyen a Danni Sanders, pero que en realidad no tiene que ver absolutamente nada que ver con el patrón conductual de la protagonista.
What a person asserts in a social network is not explicitly true, what is true is what can be proven with facts or irrefutable evidence. There are many behavioral patterns, and I ponder before culminating on a term outlined in the production: Sociopath, one that is attributed to Danni Sanders, but in reality has absolutely nothing to do with the behavioral pattern of the protagonist.
Ella es solamente alguien que mintió frente a la cámara, frente a las redes sociales y le dio a los demás lo que querían leer o ver, pero la falsedad de sus acciones se reflejaran en un desenlace que únicamente podrá encontrar en la película.
She is just someone who lied in front of the camera, in front of social media and gave others what they wanted to read or see, but the falsity of her actions will be reflected in a denouement that can only be found in the movie.
No te mientas, y no te sumerjas en algo que no eres.
Don't lie to yourself, and don't immerse yourself in something you are not.
Which would you wish for: fame or peace? I don't know if it's possible to have both and be okay but this movie has taught me some things.
Not Okay (2022) is a social media satire that touchingly focuses on a social hoax, gun violence/terrorist attacks and internet shaming.
It's about a young lady, Danni Sanders (played by Zoey Deutch) an only child of her parents, who works at an online magazine as a photo editor and lives alone in her apartment with her guinea pig pet. Her life was okay but she finds it boring and wants more out of it. She aims to be a popular writer and wants to be seen.
In a bid to make her wishes come true and also get the attention of a young man, she puts her photo editing skills to work and fakes a trip to Paris for a writer's retreat. She celebrates her wishful trip on Instagram and Twitter. Then tragedy strikes when Paris comes under terrorist attack via a bomb, killing many. It becomes an international incident.
Family and coworkers become worried about Danni. It is a great opportunity to turn the whole news in her favour as a survivor. Danni has the world's attention on her through social media trending with her survival stories. She basks in this glory until the truth comes out.
How far and deeper will she dig herself in to cover up her lies? You'll have to watch this fascinating, yet touching movie to answer this question.

Review
No doubt, movies on the delights of social media are always entertaining and Not Okay is not an exception. If you are into the teenagers' and young adults' lifestyle of Instagramming, having their phones and devices literally strapped to them 24-7, scrolling through their feeds every second and grinning at their screen, then this movie is for you.
Written and directed by Quin Shepard, I appreciate how the movie starts with the repercussion of Danni's hoax and then takes viewers months back to how it all began making it easy to follow the storyline. Each scene was well coordinated and the visual effects were smooth.
I adore Zoey Deutsch after watching her lovely performances in Beautiful Creatures (2013), Vampire Academy (2014) and Set It Up (2018). And I must say she stunningly performed the role of the spoiled but lost girl in this movie.
I love the chemistry of the cast. Danni's love interest, Colin, made me burst into a laugh when I finally recognised him as Dylan O’Brien. Maybe because he dyed his hair off-white and he was always in a cloud of marijuana smoke!
Moral Of The Movie
There are many lessons to be learned from watching this movie and an important one is to never trivialise the experience of others in an attack or tragedy. Danni missed this point when she wished she would have experienced 9/11. I mean who wishes for something like that? I'm not surprised when a lady in her support group lashes out at her thus,
"You say you have learned but at the end of the day, you are a privileged white girl who thinks she's the main character."
This movie shows how our lives are wrapped around and governed by the internet and social media. This is not a bad thing if these tools of social change are positively used. Becoming famous via a hoax like this is not a way to live but there are many like Danni. In other words, we cannot deny that there are people who profit off these tragedies but can we say it is right?
This movie is gripping, touching and enjoyable. I was on the edge of my seat, feeling embarrassed for Danni Sanders while wishing I could help her turn back the clock to a time when she did not have the world's attention but was okay. After the world trolled and shamed her, she was definitely Not Okay!
Back to my first question, fame or peace? I'll pick peace every time! 😄
