I'm a very picky movie watcher. I finish watching less than ten percent of the films I begin. If a film is very bad, I jump to the middle, then to the ending, and never think about it again. The Vault was one of the few films that captured my attention from the beginning scene to the end.
It starts off with an old Spanish treasure sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Three of the coins have the coordinates of an even bigger treasure. Walter (who is played by Liam Cunningham from Game of Thrones) and his salvage crew recover it, but the Spanish feds swoop in and take the treasure before they can see the coins.
We then get introduced to Thom played by Freddie Highmore who is a young engineering genius being recruited by big oil companies after he provides a solution to oil spills while still a student at Cambridge. His father pressures him to follow in his footsteps and go the oil route with his life, but he finds Walter's invitation of breaking into an "impossible engineering problem" of a vault located deep underground more appealing.
The Vault isn't much different from other bank heist stories. It has a gang of criminals with different skills and personalities. There is a job that seems impossible to accomplish and the alert banker who's always on their tracks. The acting was good and the story moved along well. While The Vault isn't the greatest heist story of all time, it's still one of the best movies I've seen in 2021 which isn't saying much.
The final mission in GTA V where you steal gold from the government and have to helicopter away is my favorite heist story and then I'd say Oceans Eleven as my second. The Spanish TV show Money Heist was very good too. What do you think is the best heist story of all time?
