Hello, hello, my dear cinephiles,
It seems that the professor of money heist has not been the only one interested in circumventing the security of Spain's institutions. While he planned a whole scheme to rob the Royal Mint of Spain, Walter Moreland did the same in The Vault or Way Down to enter the Bank of Spain and recover an old treasure that he has been searching for 30 years.
The treasure that Walter has searched so hard for is attributed to Francis Drake, a corsair (or pirate, depending on how you want to look at it) from the fourteenth century who served the British crown in times of armed conflict with Spain, a time when he decided to rob Spain of a valuable treasure that he managed to hide so well that no one ever knew of its whereabouts. However, centuries later, a document written by his first officer came to light in which he revealed that the coordinates of the treasure were engraved on three coins that Drake kept in a chest identified with his motto "sic parvis magna" (great things come from small things).

Tal parece que el profesor de la casa de papel no ha sido el único interesado en burlar la seguridad de las instituciones españolas, mientras él orquestó todo un plan para robar a ultranza la Fábrica Nacional de Monedas y Timbre, Walter Moreland hizo lo propio en Asalto a la Casa de Moneda para ingresar al Banco de España y recuperar un viejo tesoro que ha estado buscando por 30 años.
El tesoro que Walter con tanto empeño ha perseguido se le atribuye a Francis Drake, un corsario (o pirata según se quiera ver) del siglo XIV que servía a la corona británica en los tiempos de conflictos armados con España, época en la que decidió robar a España un valioso tesoro que llegó a guardar tan bien que nadie nunca supo de su paradero. Sin embargo, siglos más tarde, salió a la luz un documento escrito por su primer oficial en el que éste revelaba que las coordenadas del tesoro estaban grabadas en tres monedas que Drake guardó en un cofre identificado con su lema “sic parvis magna” (las grandes cosas, provienen de cosas pequeñas).
In 1645, the chest with the desired treasure fell to the bottom of the sea just 40 km from the Spain coast, and it was not until 2009 when Walter and his "rescue" team of the Atlantis managed to recover it. Everything they had been searching for 30 years was before their eyes, in their hands, but it could not be opened, moments later the chest was confiscated by the authorities because it was considered property of the Spain crown, being thus safeguarded in the safest vault in the world, the one of the Bank of Spain. It is said that this vault is a miracle of engineering, with a security mechanism impossible to circumvent, impenetrable and infallible, but above all mysterious, enigmatic, no one knows for certain how it was built, or how it works, only a truly brilliant mind could decipher it and detect any vulnerability in its system, a mastermind like that of Thom Johnson.
En 1.645, el cofre con el tan deseado tesoro cayó al fondo del mar a tan solo 40 KM de las costas españolas, y no fue sino hasta el año 2.009 cuando Walter y su grupo de “rescate” del Atlantis lograron recuperarlo. Lo que por 30 años habían estado buscando estaba ante sus ojos, en sus manos, pero no pudo ser abierto, instantes después el cofre fue confiscado por las autoridades por considerarse propiedad de la corona española, quedando así resguardado en la bóveda más segura del mundo, la del Banco de España. Se dice de esa bóveda que es un milagro de la ingeniería, con un mecanismo de seguridad imposible de burlar, impenetrable e infalible, pero sobre todo misterioso, enigmático, nadie conoce a ciencias ciertas cómo fue construida, ni cómo funciona, solo una mente verdaderamente brillante podría descifrarla y detectar alguna vulnerabilidad en su sistema, una mente maestra como la de Thom Johnson.
Thom, played by actor/producer/director, Freddie Highmore, yes, the same guy who was once Charlie Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the same guy who is still Dr. Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor series, is in Way Down a brilliant engineer that was the only one able to come up with the perfect solution to stop an oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, which made him a desirable target for all oil companies, a genius that everyone wants to have in their work team...including Walter's.
Thom, quien por cierto es interpretado por el actor, productor y director, Freddie Highmore, sí, el mismo que un día fue Charlie Bucket en Charlie y la Fábrica de Chocolate, y el mismo que sigue siendo el Dr. Shaun Murphy en la serie The Good Doctor, es en Asalto a la Casa de Moneda un ingeniero brillante que fue el único capaz de idear la solución perfecta para detener una fuga de petróleo en el Golfo de México, lo que lo hizo blanco deseable de todas las compañías petroleras, un genio que todos quieren tener en su equipo de trabajo…incluyendo el de Walter.
With time running out and with only one last chance to recover the coins, Walter met with Thom in London to convince him to travel to Spain and join his team, he is fully confident that Thom's genius can uncover the perfect solution to break into the much-feared and guarded vault of the Bank of Spain.
In favor of the plan, a multidisciplinary team committed to achieving what they consider a rescue rather than a robbery, and the euphoria of the Spanish people in the midst of the final of the 2010 South Africa World Cup in which Spain is emerging as the winner, a determining factor in this story. There are many obstacles to overcome to achieve the mission, of course, we will see all the logistics of this team to enter the bank, identify the vulnerable points, study the panorama, devise the plan, take control, and of course, execute the extraction on the precise day and time. Any mistake can condemn them to prison, or death.
Con el tiempo contrarreloj y con una única última oportunidad para recuperar las monedas, Walter contacta a Thom en Londres para convencerlo de viajar a España y unirse a su equipo, él confía plenamente que la genialidad de Thom podrá descifrar la clave perfecta para ingresar a la muy temida y custodiada bóveda del Banco de España.
A favor del plan, un equipo multidisciplinario comprometido en lograr lo que consideran un rescate más que un robo, y la euforia del pueblo español en medio de la final del mundial de futbol Suráfrica 2.010 en el que España se perfila como ganador, un factor determinante en esta historia. Son muchos los obstáculos a sortear para lograr el cometido, por supuesto, veremos toda una logística de este grupo para ingresar al banco, identificar los puntos vulnerables, estudiar el panorama, idear el plan, tomar el control, y por supuesto, ejecutar la extracción en el día y hora precisa. Cualquier error puede condenarles a la prisión, o la muerte.
Those who saw the series money hist, will observe many similarities between the series and the movie, both in the plots and in the hypotheses that are handled with respect to the construction of the vault, as well as in the possible ways to penetrate it, so it is inevitable not to associate both plots, because aha, some very well organized thieves who want to enter the most secure vault in Spain to steal something that will make them multimillionaires, that is to say? any resemblance is pure coincidence; although it is true that Way Down gives certain unexpected changes that give suspense to the film and add a little more tension to it.
Quienes vieron la casa de papel, van a conseguir muchas similitudes entre la serie y la película, tanto en los argumentos como en las hipótesis que se manejan con respecto a la construcción de la bóveda, así como en las posibles formas para penetrarla saliendo victoriosos en el intento, de manera que es inevitable no asociar ambas tramas, porque ajá, unos ladrones muy bien organizados que quieren entrar a la bóveda más segura de España a robar algo que los hará multimillonarios, o sea …cualquier parecido es pura coincidencia; aunque es cierto que Asalto a la Casa de Moneda da ciertos giros inesperados que le inyectan suspenso a la película y la ponen un poquito más de picante.
I confess that I decided to see the film because of Freddie Highmore, I am a fan of his role as Dr. Shaun, that genius that makes him see beyond what no one can see, fascinates me, and it is not very different from what happens in this film, which I did not expect, because here he is also that brilliant, masterful and ingenious mind that gets logical answers in the simplest things. Without expecting from Way Down a super movie production, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised, I enjoyed it, it is an action movie with its own touch of suspense, with a fairly predictable ending, yes, but certainly entertaining.
Something I have not mentioned, and it is important, is that the role of Walter Moreland, the owner of the shipwreck salvage company that hires Thom, is played by the Irish Liam Cunningham, the remembered Davos Seaworth from Games of Thrones, the series that one day I swore I hated, and I ended up loving so much.
Confieso que me decidí a ver la película por tratarse de Freddie Highmore, me he vuelto su fan de él con su papel del Dr. Shaun, esa genialidad que lo hace ver más allá de lo que nadie puede ver, me fascina, y no es muy diferente a lo que ocurre en esta película, que no me lo esperaba, pues aquí también es esa mente brillante, maestra e ingeniosa que consigue repuestas lógicas en las cosas más simples. Sin esperar de asalto a la casa de moneda una super producción del cine, debo decir que me sorprendió gratamente, la disfruté, es una película de acción con su toque propio de suspenso, con un final bastante predecible, eso sí, pero sin duda, entretenida.
Algo que no he mencionado, y es importante, es que el papel de Walter Moreland, el dueño de la empresa de rescate de naufragios que contrata a Thom, es interpretado por el irlandés Liam Cunningham, el recordado Davos Seaworth de Games of Thrones, la serie que un día juré odiar, y terminé amando con locura.
Well, back to the movie, and to finish this review, yes, I liked the movie a lot, it was much more than what I initially expected. It is worth mentioning that it is a Spain film production, lately, I am becoming a big fan of Spain productions, there is good cinema coming from the other side of the world. By the way, this film won a Goya Award this year for best special effects. Way Down is available on Netflix in case you decide to give it a chance, if you do, let me know what you think.
Bueno, volviendo al tema, y ya para finalizar esta reseña, sí, me gustó bastante la película, fue mucho más de lo que me esperaba inicialmente. Cabe destacar que es producción del cine español, últimamente me estoy volviendo muy fanática de las producciones españoles, se está gestando buen cine del otro lado del charco. Por cierto, esta película ganó este año un Premio Goya por mejores efectos especiales, así que si tiene lo suyo. Asalto a la Casa de Moneda está disponible en Netflix por si deciden darle una oportunidad, si lo hacen, luego me cuentan que les ha parecido.
