We see Kurumi’s dad return home, and when he arrives, Kurumi screams, which startles him. He enters the room to find her acting as if nothing were happening. Kurumi hides from her dad that she’s trading on the foreign exchange market and pretends to be studying, which makes her dad trust her and leave without a second thought. But luckily for Kurumi, the currency’s price suddenly rose, and she was able to make a profit.
Then we see that Mochiko Kogane, who is also involved in the world of FX, tells Kurumi that they should take a look at the Australian dollar against the yen. This surprises Kurumi, as it’s the type of currency her mother used to trade. Kurumi then begins to analyze the currency pair’s price patterns, and according to her analysis, even though the currencies remain stable, there’s still room for profit—but the risk is very high. Still, the idea takes root in Kurumi’s mind.
And here comes what’s perhaps the most interesting part of the episode—and likely a key development in the future as well. Kurumi’s friend offers to lend her 3 million yen so she can start trading with that money, in the hope that they’ll both make money in the process—and even if Kurumi were to lose the money, Mochiko would be willing to accept repayment in installments. I definitely think that as Kurumi’s situation progresses or she makes mistakes, she’ll be tempted to do something along those lines.
Kurumi decides it’s not a bad idea to take a risk with the Australian dollar and the yen, so she decides to buy some and start trading with her own money. She knows the risks, but the potential profits appeal to her even more, since they bring her closer to her goal.
When Kurumi checks the price a few hours later, she notices it’s starting to rise, which motivates her even more, as she begins to see significant gains within a few hours. But when she gets home and checks the price again, she sees that it has plummeted and begins to wonder whether to cut her losses or wait for the currency to rebound.
And this is where Kurumi apparently makes the mistake of the episode: she decides not to cut her losses and to hold onto her position, believing that the currency will rise in the long term and that she can still wait a little longer.
So, a few days later, when she checks on the pair, Kurumi is surprised to find that the plunge has gotten even worse and her losses are now much more significant, leaving her in a desperate situation.
So much so that she remembers Mochiko offered her a three-million-yen loan, but Kurumi decides not to accept it and does something even worse: she takes the money her dad keeps on a table and deposits it into her own account. She’s going all in, and the episode ends with Kurumi saying, “There’s no way I’ll lose.”
Well, we’ll have to see just how “impossible” it is for Kurumi to lose, but I think it’s becoming clearer that the path she’s on isn’t the best one, and that she’s decided to start gambling even more rather than making sound, level-headed decisions. She could have taken her winnings and walked away, but she took a risk, and now her situation is pretty dire. We’ll see. All images are screenshots.
