Esta película trata de una joven de 16 años llamada Emily Smith Dungy (Olesva Rulin) muy estudiosa, perfeccionista, deportista, todas sus tristezas y frustraciones las busca eliminar en el deporte que practica. Para ella siempre ha sido importante que su familia la apoye, pero lamentablemente su familia es disfuncional. Su madre Samantha Smith Dungy (Kristin Chenoweth) sumergida en el trabajo, no le importa más nada sino su trabajo, mantiene económicamente a la familia, su profesión tiene que ver con negocios con un buen cargo. Su padre, Duncan Dungy (Matthew Modine) era artista, desmotivado de la vida, se había roto el matrimonio, cada quien andaba por su lado, Samantha una exitosa mujer y Duncan un fracasado.
Los hijos crecen en este ambiente, donde sus padres estaban sumergidos cada uno en su mundo, Samantha en su excesivo trabajo y Duncan en sus frustraciones y falta de trabajo, sus hermanos crecen en este mundo de indiferencia que crearon sus padres, y también viven cada uno en su mundo.
