Set in 1983 in South Korea during the Colonial Japan, Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-wook), a former mountain spirit travels back in time from modern South Korea to Chōsen period, the dark time in South Korea history where the native was forced to blend in into Japanese identity. Unlike the previous season focusing on romance and the story of Lee Yoon to his fall, this time it focuses on his saga with his brother Lee Rang, a half human half demon and their attempt to save the society they were in.
What intrigued me the most about this particular series is the blend of South Korea mysticism and history. The country is rich in its folklores and deities with its own stories and origin. But also, the vintage settings of the story that includes a sight of train carriages and tram in the middle of the city.
You see, I have my own fascination towards early 20th century urban living. In the past, train carriages are often seen in the city and they are not located outside of the housing. As people have cars, trams no longer exist across Asia. So, through series like this, I got to see how infrastructure and transportation system were better. Although it is unfortunate that we can't replicate it again in modern Asia.
As for the story itself, it's a typical brotherhood comedy. If you enjoy that kind of story, I'd recommend checking it out. But just like myself, I was more immersed in its setting and the backdrop more than the characters story itself.
I managed to finish watching it overnight as I was quite sleepless and spent hours on it. It's one of my binge session and now, I no longer want to watch series. Perhaps next, I'd review a film again. But I can't lie, series is easier to watch especially when you watch it during a lunch/dinner break.
