Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about Eugene Porter, one of the important characters in The Walking Dead, and in my opinion one of the characters that evolved the most since his first appearance both in the TV show and in the comic, and that's a wonderful thing because the story is full of nuances and dynamism. This sympathetic character was even the protagonist of one of the best plot twists in the history of the show, earning the respect and admiration of all.
Hola amigos, hoy quiero hablarles de Eugene Porter, uno de los personajes importantes en The Walking Dead, y a mi juicio es uno de los que más evolucionaron desde su primera aparición tanto en la serie de televisión como en el comic, y eso es algo maravilloso porque la historia se llena de matices y dinamismo. Este simpático personaje incluso fue el protagonista de uno de los mejores giros de trama en la historia de la serie, ganándose el respeto y la admiración de todos.

Eugene Porter, magnificently played by actor and comedian Josh McDermitt, appeared on the TV show from season four onwards. At first we saw him as an extremely fearful guy, completely dependent on his companions, Rosita and Abraham, who protected him from walkers and other dangers because he had told them both that he was a scientist and was working on the cure to end the pandemic that was sweeping the world, and was causing the corpses to walk and attack.
Eugene Porter, magníficamente interpretado por Josh McDermitt, actor y comediante, apareció en la serie de televisión a partir de la cuarta temporada. Al principio lo vimos como un tipo miedoso en extremo, completamente dependiente de sus compañeros, Rosita y Abraham quienes lo protegían de los caminantes y otros peligros debido a que él les había dicho a ambos que era un científico y estaba trabajando en la cura para acabar con la pandemia que azotaba el mundo, y era la causante de que los cadáveres pudieran caminar y atacar.
This was not true, Eugene was not a certified scientist, let alone one who could end the pandemic, he was just a school teacher who wanted to find protection to get to Washington where he thought it would be safer. Evidently everyone was disappointed but Abraham was filled with anger and took it out on Eugene by attacking him.
Esto no era cierto, Eugene no era un científico certificado y mucho menos podía acabar con la pandemia, solo era un profesor de escuela que quería hallar protección para llegar a Washington donde creía que podía ser más seguro. Evidentemente todos se decepcionaron pero Abraham se llenó de ira y la descargó sobre Eugene atacándolo.
Eugene was basically useless when it came to physical combat and handling weapons, but he was extremely cunning and a great liar, so he used his unique skills to make his way in the new world and survive in it.
Eugene básicamente era un inútil en cuanto a los combates físicos y el manejo de las armas se refiere, pero era extremadamente astuto y un gran mentiroso, de modo que utilizó sus únicas habilidades para abrirse camino en el nuevo mundo y poder sobrevivir en él.
In his own words: "I know I'm smarter than most people. I know I'm a very good liar. And I know I needed to get to Washington.

However, the knowledge that many people had died because of his lie, trying to protect him to get him to Washington, as well as the fact that he was not skilled with weapons and always had to depend on others, and also the reproaches of Rosita Espinoza (one of the survivors along with Abrahan of the group that escorted him to Washington) made him feel more useless and guilty.

Eventually, as the story progresses, we see that Eugene begins to use his intellectual abilities for the benefit of the community, so he turns to making bullets, but Negan, the leader of "The Saviours" (a group of villains) besieging various communities, decides to kidnap him when he sees his extraordinary abilities, to make bullets for him.

When Rosita and the rest of his group went to rescue him they were in for a huge disappointment, as he decided to stay with Negan, something that disappointed everyone (including the fans) but what no one knew was that the most impressive plot twist was about to happen. Eugene was just using his brilliant mind and his extraordinary gifts as a great liar (remember, these were his only abilities) so that when it came time for the fight between the Saviours and the inhabitants of Alexandria, the villains' guns went off on themselves, weakening the group and securing victory for the Alexandrians.
Cuando Rosita y los demás de su grupo fueron a rescatarlo se llevaron una tremenda decepción, pues él decidió quedarse con Negan, algo que decepcionó mucho a todos (incluyendo a los fans) pero lo que nadie sabía era que estaba a punto de ocurrir el giro de trama más impresionante. Eugene solo estaba usando su mente brillante y sus extraordinarias dotes de gran mentiroso (recuerden que eran sus únicas habilidades) de modo que cuando llegó el momento del combate entre Salvadores y los habitantes de Alejandría, las armas de los villanos se dispararon contra ellos mismos, debilitando el grupo y asegurando la victoria para los alejandrinos.
It was an epic and thrilling moment that not only made us proud of Eugene, but also showed that brute strength and physical skills are not everything, that you can also fight (even more efficiently) using cunning and intelligence. Eugene achieved far more than any other character while keeping a low profile.
Fue un momento épico y emocionante que no solo nos hizo sentir orgullosos de Eugene, sino que además él demostró que la fuerza bruta y las habilidades físicas no lo son todo, que también se puede luchar (incluso con mayor eficiencia) usando la astucia y la inteligencia. Eugene logró mucho más que cualquier otro personaje mientras mantenía un bajo perfil.
I think it was from that moment on that the character started to earn his own place in Alexandria, and stopped being seen as "The Weak One", "The Useless One" or "The Fearful One" because they knew that he simply had another way of fighting, however his evolution didn't stop there, he also learned to fight physically and became more and more skilled in handling weapons and hand to hand combat to eliminate walkers, he is not the best of the whole group doing that, but he advanced a lot in that aspect. Creo que fue a partir de ese momento cuando el personaje comenzó a ganarse su propio lugar en Alejandría, y dejo de ser visto como «El débil», «El inútil» o «El miedoso» porque sabían que simplemente él tenía otra manera de combatir, sin embargo su evolución no se quedó allí, sino que también aprendió a combatir de forma física y cada vez se volvió más hábil en el manejo de las armas y el combate cuerpo a cuerpo para eliminar caminantes, no es el mejor de todo el grupo haciendo eso, pero avanzó muchísimo en ese aspecto. En este video podrán apreciar precisamente lo que les digo.
Eugene understood that it was no use living in fear, that he had to face them, so he adapted to the new world he was living in, to the new challenges, taking advantage of his new skills without losing his old ones. The best of all (in my personal opinion) is that he stopped being a liar but he is still quite cunning and intelligent, extremely skilled in handling and manufacturing technology, more than anyone else, and a great loquacity as well as diplomacy, which gives him a great facility to do research and gain the empathy of many.
Eugene comprendió que de nada valía vivir con miedo, que tenía que enfrentarlos, de modo que fue adaptándose al nuevo mundo donde vivía, a los nuevos retos, aprovechando sus nuevas habilidades sin perder las anteriores. Lo mejor de todo (en mi opinión personal) es que dejó de ser un mentiroso pero sigue siendo bastante astuto e inteligente, extremadamente hábil en el manejo y fabricación de tecnología, más que cualquier otro, y una gran locuacidad además de diplomacia, lo que le da una gran facilidad para hacer investigaciones y ganarse la empatía de muchos.
We have also been able to appreciate the more human side of the character, discovering that his qualities also include nobility and great sensitivity, so the viewer's empathy towards him has increased, we don't want him to be hurt. I would have liked to see him with Rosita but I had to accept that their relationship could not be possible, even though Eugene was deeply in love with her for a long time, but I think that after the disappointment she had with Abraham, she could never again allow herself to love anyone else.
También hemos podido apreciar el lado más humano del personaje, descubriendo que entre sus cualidades también está la nobleza y una gran sensibilidad, por lo cuál la empatía del espectador hacia él se ha incrementado, no queremos que lo lastimen. Me hubiese gustado verlo junto a Rosita pero me tocó aceptar que su relación no podía ser posible, a pesar de que Eugene estuvo profundamente enamorado de ella durante mucho tiempo, pero creo que después de la decepción que ella tuvo con Abraham, jamás pudo volver a permitirse amar a nadie más.
Well friends, those are my impressions about this wonderful character, he is not exactly my favourite of all the characters but I consider him to be one of the best and he has had a great evolution together with Carol Peletier, he went from being a useless character, without much to contribute to the plot, who often only hindered his companions and made the viewers angry, to a very skilful character, balanced, strong in his decisions, who knows how to make good use of his intelligence for the wellbeing of his group.
Y bien amigos, esas son mis impresiones acerca de este maravilloso personaje, no es precisamente mi favorito de todos los personajes pero considero que es uno de los mejores y que ha tenido una gran evolución junto con Carol Peletier, pasó de ser un personaje inútil, sin mucho que aportar a la trama, que muchas veces solo estorbaba a sus compañeros y hacía enojar a los espectadores, a un personaje bastante hábil, equilibrado, fuerte en sus decisiones, que sabe aprovecha muy bien su inteligencia en función del bienestar de su grupo.
