The episode begins by showing us a world divided between four nations: the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation and Air Nomads. Each nation has its own elemental bending ability, but there is one person who can master all four elements. This person is known as the Avatar and his responsibility is to maintain balance in the world. However, the Fire Nation has become determined to expand its power and the threat of war is getting closer.

The story then takes us to the Fire Nation. Fire Lord Sozin is preparing for a massive attack and the Fire Nation is looking for a way to gain control over the other nations. An Earthbender is seen trying to escape through the Fire Nation capital while carrying important information. He is eventually captured and tortured because the Fire Nation wants to know where the Avatar is. This opening immediately shows how dangerous the Fire Nation has become and sets up the war that will change the entire world. The story then moves to the Air Nomads. We meet Aang, a young Airbender who is still enjoying his childhood. Unlike the serious situation happening around him, Aang is playful and energetic. He spends time flying around with his sky bison Appa and practicing Airbending. Aang does not yet fully understand how important he is going to become. He simply wants to enjoy his freedom and spend time with his friends and mentor Monk Gyatso.

Aang soon receives news that changes his entire life. He learns that he is the Avatar. Normally this would be an incredible honor but Aang is still very young and does not feel ready for such a responsibility. The pressure becomes too much for him and he begins struggling with the idea that his childhood is suddenly disappearing. Aang's relationship with Gyatso becomes especially important during this part of the episode. Gyatso understands that Aang is still just a child and does not want him to feel like the entire world is already resting on his shoulders. The peaceful Air Temples suddenly become battlefields as Fire Nation forces arrive with the intention of eliminating the Air Nomads and preventing the Avatar from becoming a threat to their plans.

Aang is not there when the attack begins. Overwhelmed by the pressure of being the Avatar, he leaves on Appa. He does not realize that his decision will have enormous consequences. While flying through the storm he loses control and disappears into the ocean. A huge wave carries him away and he becomes trapped inside the ice. This is where the story jumps forward. A hundred years pass. The world has completely changed. We then meet Katara and Sokka in the Southern Water Tribe. The two siblings live in a very different world from the one Aang knew. While the siblings are out on the ice Katara loses control of her Waterbending. Her attack hits the ice and suddenly creates a massive crack. The ice begins breaking apart and something is hidden inside it. Katara and Sokka discover Aang.

He was supposed to be the Avatar who would protect the world but he vanished just when the Fire Nation attacked. Meanwhile,. When Zuko arrives he demands that the Water Tribe hand over the Avatar. Aang finally understands that the Fire Nation is looking for him and that his identity is much more important than he realized.

Aang decides to surrender himself because he does not want the village to be attacked because of him. Katara and Sokka are shocked by his decision but Aang believes that giving himself up is the best way to protect them. He goes with Zuko and is taken aboard the Fire Nation ship. Inside the ship Aang finally accepts that he is the Avatar. When Zuko asks him to reveal his identity, Aang openly admits who he is. This is a major turning point because Aang is no longer running away from his responsibility. But Zuko quickly realizes that capturing the Avatar is not going to be as easy as he expected. Aang uses his Airbending abilities to escape and fights his way through the Fire Nation soldiers. His movements are fast and playful but he is also clearly powerful. Katara and Sokka return to help him and the three finally escape from the ship.

What started as Aang's attempt to escape his responsibilities has now turned into a journey where he has no choice but to face them.
