There are songs that you like because of their beauty, and then there are songs that somehow capture the feelings that you never thought were capable of being verbalized. For me, "Beautiful Things" by Benson Boone is one of these songs.

At first, I thought that it was just a beautiful love song, but the more I listened to it, the more I understood that it is really about gratitude, love, blessings, and the fear of losing the things that matter most to us. And that is exactly why I think so many people connected with it.

The song starts with Benson reminiscing about his past life. It was not easy before, but recently his life has turned around for the best.
I think this is a feeling that many of us can connect with. The life can be harsh sometimes.. We face problems, disappointments, financial issues, family problems, heartbreaks, and many other situations that make us wonder when will everything finally get better.
But it can.
Sometimes, after facing difficult moments, you look around one day and realize that nothing in your life is the same anymore.
And it is exactly what Benson seems to be feeling in this song. He finds beautiful things in his life, especially a girl he loves... and his parents love her too, and he feels that his life has been completed because of her.
And instead of just enjoying that, there is also another feeling that quietly blooms inside him: it is the feeling of "What if I lose all of this?"

This is probably my favorite part of the song. Benson is truly grateful for what he has. He is not just happy for his blessings... He is almost overwhelmed by them.
He thanks God for them, appreciates the people around him, and realizes how much better things have become.
It reminds me that sometimes we spend too much time thinking about what we do not have that we forget about what we already have in front of us, such as our loving family, people that stay around us, our healthy children, food on our table, and even a simple day without a major problem.
These things may seem normal when having them every day, but it can be some of the most beautiful things in life. And I think this song made me look into my blessings now.

What makes "Beautiful Things" even more interesting to me is the fact that Benson Boone himself has explained that it originated from his real life. After he moved to Los Angeles, he could not sleep one night. He had his grandmother's old piano in his new house, so he went downstairs and played it. This inspired the first ideas for the song. He later worked on it with Jack LaFrantz and Evan Blair.
The song was also inspired by a new relationship. Boone explained that, for the first time, he feared losing someone because he had no control over how the relationship would turn out.
The knowledge of that makes the verses of the song to sound more and more special.
The lines about finding a girl his parents love and going through difficult years are not just random romantic lyrics.
They were created from a very real period of his life.
And I think it is really a very human feeling.

There is just one part in the song that I personally do not agree with.
Benson expressed the fear that God would take the beautiful things that He gave him. The more blessed Benson becomes, the more he should be concerned that God would steal it all away from him.
I understand where this fear comes from. When something becomes really precious to us, the thought of losing it can be scary.
But I do not see God this way.
I believe God wants us to be happy and enjoy the good things that He gives us.
I do not believe that God gives us something beautiful just to steal it away from us and make us suffer.
So I think I understand the feeling behind that part of the song, but I do not share that particular vision of God.
