What do you do when you’re not feeling quite yourself?

That’s right, you put on a lovely, simple, romantic film.

The sort where you know exactly how it’s going to end from the very first minute.

Her Pen Pal was one of those films for me recently.

Lovely, just lying in bed under my warm blanket, watching it.

To be perfectly honest: it’s not really memorable.

It’s just yet another Hallmark-style film that neatly follows all the well-trodden paths.

The story centres on Victoria, an event planner who travels to France for her best friend’s wedding.

Her ex is also coming – and bringing his new girlfriend – so she gets in touch with her old French pen pal Jacques to avoid having to face all the social awkwardness on her own.

And well, one thing naturally leads to another.

And it couldn’t be any other way, as the film treats you to some stunning shots of Paris.

Yet one thing really struck a chord with me, or resonated deeply: the fact that the love between the main characters, Victoria and Jacques, blossomed through the letters they wrote to each other.

A love that began years ago, when life wasn’t yet fast-paced and digital, and which, after all these years, still hadn’t faded.

Even though they’d never actually met in person.

A love that begins with words, dreams and a connection you can’t quite put into words.

And it was precisely this sense of recognition that made this film a little more special to me.

And, of course, they eventually end up together in the film.

Perhaps that was precisely the bit that stuck with me.

Not because it was particularly surprising, but because it gave me hope once again.

Hope that true love sometimes finds its own way, no matter how long it takes or how much distance there is between two people.

It’s certainly no cinematic masterpiece, but as a heart-warming little interlude, it does exactly what it’s supposed to do.

I must admit that I dozed off a few times whilst watching it, but that was probably more down to the fact that I wasn’t feeling quite myself that evening than to the film itself.

Wat doe je als je, je niet heel lekker voelt.

Juist ja, dan zet je een heerlijke, simpele, romantische film op.

Zo eentje waarbij je vanaf de eerste minuut al precies weet hoe het afloopt.

Her Pen Pal was voor mij laatst zo’n film.

Heerlijk vanuit bed, onder mijn warme deken en kijken maar.

Als ik heel eerlijk ben: gedenkwaardig is 'ie niet echt.

Het is gewoon weer de zoveelste Hallmark-achtige film die netjes alle platgetreden paden afwandelt.

Het verhaal draait om Victoria, een eventplanner die naar Frankrijk afreist voor de bruiloft van haar beste vriendin.

Haar ex komt ook én neemt zijn nieuwe vriendin mee, dus zoekt ze contact met haar oude Franse penvriend Jacques om niet alleen te hoeven opdraaien voor de sociale confrontaties.

En tja, van het een komt natuurlijk het ander.

En dat kan ook niet anders want de film trakteert je op een paar prachtige shots van Parijs.

Toch sprak één ding me erg aan, of kwam dicht bij mezelf: het feit dat de liefde tussen de hoofdrolspelers Victoria en Jacques ontstaan is door brieven aan elkaar te schrijven.

Een liefde die jaren geleden ontstaan is, toen de tijd nog niet snel en digitaal was, en na jaren nog altijd niet gedoofd bleek te zijn.

Ook al hadden ze elkaar nog nooit in levende lijven ontmoet.

Een liefde die begint met woorden, dromen en een connectie die je niet zomaar kunt uitleggen.

En juist deze herkenbaarheid maakte deze film iets specialer voor mij.

En natuurlijk komen ze in de film uiteindelijk samen.

Misschien was juist dát het stukje dat voor mij bleef hangen.

Niet omdat het bijzonder verrassend was, maar omdat het me opnieuw hoop gaf.

Hoop dat echte liefde soms haar eigen weg vindt, hoe lang het ook duurt en hoeveel afstand er ook tussen twee mensen zit.

Een cinematografisch hoogstandje is het absoluut niet, maar als hartverwarmend tussendoortje doet hij precies wat hij moet doen.

Ik moet wel bekennen dat ik er een paar keer bij in slaap ben gevallen, maar dat lag waarschijnlijk eerder aan het feit dat ik me die avond niet helemaal lekker voelde dan aan de film zelf.
