The Shallows (2016) Review: A Beautiful Beach Turns Into a Fight for Survival

Review by @mmam 🏆#112 🔥3 🎵50 🎬37 📺12 · 2h · of The Shallows

Nancy was still grieving the death of her mother when she decided to visit a beautiful, secluded beach that her mother had once told her about. She went there alone, carrying her surfboard and hoping to enjoy some peaceful time in the water.

She thought she had found the perfect place to surf. A beautiful, quiet beach with clear blue water and almost nobody around. She went into the water expecting to enjoy herself, but she had no idea that something dangerous was already waiting beneath the surface.
Nancy was surfing when a huge great white shark suddenly attacked her.

The attack was brutal. The shark injured her badly, but Nancy managed to escape onto a small rock in the middle of the water. At first, it looked like she had survived the worst part. But then she realised the real problem.
She was stranded.

The shore was not extremely far away, but the water between her and the beach belonged to the shark.
Nancy had a deep wound on her leg, her surfboard was damaged, and she had very little time before the tide began to rise. She also had to deal with the pain and the fear of knowing that the shark was still circling around her.

And this was where The Shallows became really interesting.

Nancy was not just running away from a shark. She had to think.
She used whatever she could find around her, including her knowledge of the ocean and the environment around the rock. She also discovered a wounded seagull trapped nearby, and surprisingly, the bird became a small companion during her terrifying wait.

As the hours passed, Nancy's situation became worse. The tide was rising, the rock was becoming less safe, and the shark was still waiting below.

There were moments when she tried to figure out how to reach the shore without becoming the shark's next meal. Every attempt came with serious danger. She had to make painful decisions because staying where she was meant waiting for the water to cover the rock.

One of the most intense parts was watching Nancy gradually lose her strength while still refusing to give up. She was bleeding, exhausted and frightened, but she kept looking for a way out.
And the shark was not going anywhere.

What made the movie work for me was how simple the situation was. There was no large group of people to save Nancy. No weapons. No rescue team immediately arriving. It was just one woman, one dangerous shark and a very small piece of rock separating her from the open water.

The movie also showed that survival is not always about being stronger than the danger. Sometimes, it is about staying calm enough to think when everything around you is telling you to panic.

Blake Lively carried almost the entire movie as Nancy, and her performance made the fear feel personal. You could see the pain and desperation on her face as her situation became more dangerous.
By the time Nancy finally makes her move toward survival, the tension is already high because you know the shark is still there.

Verdict: The Shallows was a simple but intense survival thriller. It did not need a complicated story to keep me interested. The limited setting, the constant threat from the shark, and Nancy's struggle to survive made the movie tense from beginning to end. Blake Lively also did a great job carrying most of the movie on her own.
It is the kind of survival movie that can make you look at a peaceful beach differently. The water may look beautiful from the surface, but you never really know what is underneath.

If you enjoy survival movies where one person has to use courage, intelligence and whatever is available to stay alive, this 2016 movie is worth watching.
