You know, I usually say that 2016 was the last of the greats when it comes to movie and film production, and I wouldn’t be totally wrong because 2016 had some really great films, and I’m happy I thought of one today to share with you al. One of the best thrillers I’ve seen which leaves me pretty short because I do not see a lot of thrillers, but I hope you guys enjoy this one.
The Shallows (2016)
Medical student, Nancy Adams, travels to a secluded beach in Mexico, shortly after the death of her mother due to cancer. She’s come along with her friend, but while her friend stays back at the hotel after a frenzied partying, Nancy gets a friendly local to drop her off at the beach. She surfs for several hours with two locals (who later take a break), and then, while riding the last wave back to the beach, a great white shark knocks her off her surfboard and bites her leg. Left alone after the unaware locals leave, Nancy must find a way to survive this shark who is hell bent on eating her up, but in a secluded beach surrounded by deep waters and barely a soul in sight to offer assistance, her chances are pretty slim.
I believe that there’s a reason I’m not a Westerner who is inclined to surfing, mountain climbing, and all that dangerous stuff. I guess it’s because I know if I ever encounter a life-threatening hurdle or obstacle, I’ll just say my prayers and leave the rest to God. This was one very beautiful film, and I would say, my favourite shark film since Jaws. The shark looked pretty real. The CGI and cinematography were excellent too. Capturing those aerial views, and the underwater ones with the shark was chef’s kiss. Almost too believable that it was an actual shark.
Blake Lively’s performance was pure magnificence. I like that the film started with a background story that made her a likable person who we’d all want to root for, and then her acting was just brilliant. You feel completely immersed in the moment, watching her as the raw terror in her face just adds to the compelling performance she gave. Because of how close the cameras were, I felt like I was with her every step of the way. The tension was palpable, and I think I let out far too many screams that suggest that I’m not such a tough woman after all, lol.
With how disappointing a lot of other shark films have been, The Shallows gave me a pretty good surprise, and I lived for every moment. Frankly, if I survived this kind of thing, you will never find me in so much as a bathtub, but different strokes for different folks, I guess. Shark thrillers are the absolute bomb. One of the premises of every athlete and adventurer is to be prepared and in good physical shape to meet their goals; improve the execution time of a race, know your own limitations and even have basic knowledge of first aid, to attend to your colleagues or yourself, in case of an emergency. All these details and some more, I observed while watching The Shallows or "Miedo Profundo" for the umpteenth time.
Una de las premisas de todo deportista y aventurero, es estar preparado y en buena forma física para cumplir con sus metas; mejorar el tiempo de ejecución de una carrera, conocer sus propias limitaciones e incluso tener conocimientos básicos de primeros auxilios, para atender a tus compañeros o a ti mismo, en caso de alguna emergencia. Todos estos detalles y algunos más, los observé mientras veía por enésima vez The Shallows o "Miedo Profundo".
The beautiful surfer Nancy Adams (Blake Lively) sets out to enjoy an emblematic beach, an earthly paradise known for her deceased mother, who constantly brings back memories. But who would think of going alone to an unknown place? There were certainly two companions, but they weren't friends or family, so this caused me some discomfort. Although it's normal when we want to enjoy something undisturbed, so it's also understandable from Nancy's point of view.

También es remarcable la alta carga de suspenso y drama, que se genera a lo largo de la cinta, algo característico del director Jaume Collet-Serra que cumplió con mis expectativas desde un principio. However, "Deep Fear" has enough elements to differentiate itself from that obligatory reference, I would even dare to say that it has much more realism in its plot (with all due respect). And as I said at the beginning, the remarkable physical conditions of the protagonist help a lot with that; without ever leaving aside, the theme of faith in ourselves, because a single bit of doubt from Nancy in herself, meant life or death in that beautiful desolate place.
Sin embargo "Miedo Profundo" cuenta con suficientes elementos para diferenciarse de aquella referencia obligada, incluso me atrevería a decir que, posee mucho más realismo en su argumento (con todo respeto). Y como dije al principio, las notables condiciones físicas de la protagonista, ayudan mucho con eso; sin dejar de lado nunca, el tema de la fe en nosotros mismos, porque una sola pizca de duda de Nancy en sí misma, significaba la vida o la muerte en aquel hermoso lugar desolado.

I must applaud the soundtrack that enlivens every moment, both calm and suspenseful and dramatic. Towards the end of the film I thought that the most fantastic natural landscapes can hide terrible dangers, so we must always be vigilant and prepared to avoid any risk, especially the one that we do not see.
Debo aplaudir a la banda sonora que ameniza cada momento, tanto de tranquilidad como de suspenso y drama. Esto, en conjunto con las acciones e imágenes tan realistas, convirtieron a una película desconocida en una muy buena referencia de terror real; porque a cualquiera le puede suceder.
