Ambos aceptan y comienzan a conocerse.

Hello dear Movies & TV community.

Today I bring you the review of the 2017 movie "The Bachelors", directed and written by Kurt Voelker. It stars J. K. Simmons, Julie Delpy, Josh Wiggins and Odeya Rush. It is of drama and comedy genre, it deals with themes such as the loss of a loved one, the relationship between father and son and mental health issues. I found an excerpt of the movie on TikTok and it caught my attention so I decided to watch it even though the Letterboxd app, which by the way I recommend for all of us who are movie lovers, didn't have very good reviews.

They start classes at the institute where Bill is going to teach and at the same time Wes is going to start studying, at the beginning they show Bill trying to cope with his life focusing on his new job so he doesn't have to think about his wife but it is quite difficult for him because they were together for 33 years.

Wes meets two boys and they immediately become friends, one of them is picked on by Mason, the popular boy who thinks he is the best of the bunch and is arguably quite arrogant.

In French class, Wes meets teacher Carine and a girl who is having a hard time learning the language, named Lacy. From the very beginning when he sees her he is overwhelmed by her personality and also by her beauty.

Professor Carine at the end of the class decides that because of Lacy's problems learning the language, Wes will teach her personally. They both agree and begin to get to know each other.

Lacy seems like a girl with the perfect life, but she hides things, like problems with her parents because they are always fighting and this has really taken such a toll on her mental health that she drains her pain by hurting herself, cutting her arms and looking for relief from her problems, but in the worst way.

Meanwhile Wes has to face the fact that his father is not well and at the same time relive the memories of his mother who died of cancer. And to escape from his reality, he begins to take an interest in sports, running races at his high school.

One day teacher Carine and Bill meet in the teachers' lounge and start chatting. She tells him that her son is very good at French and that he can talk to her anytime if he needs to. Then they meet again and Bill offers her to go to a restaurant, when they finish tasting the food he takes her to his house and she tells him if he wants to come in, he hesitates a bit but does. They have a sexual encounter but Bill is even worse off after this, due to the memory of his wife.

It is there when Paul, Bill's friend and the person in charge of the institute, seeing Bill so down, tells him that he knows a very good specialist for mental health, that he should take his advice seriously and go and seek professional help.

Bill begins therapy with Dr. Rollens and begins to talk for the first time about how he feels about the loss of the person he loved the most, stressing that 33 years together were not enough, that he wishes she were alive. In each session Bill shows what it looks like to be a person who is stuck in the grieving process, who has a deep depression and really doesn't know what to do to get better.

Wes, in his world, as he drags his grief at seeing his father so badly, realizes that Lacy is having a hard time too and sees a small trail of blood on her arm, he starts to worry more about her but Lacy doesn't want anyone to know and doesn't want to be helped.

Bill is medicated with different medicines but none of them have any effect, he is on the verge. And so it is that one day while giving a class his thoughts become distorted and he collapses. When they take him to the hospital, Dr. Rollens explains to Wes that his father has had a mental breakdown, and that if neither the therapy nor the medicine works, they should apply electricity to him. Wes is very concerned about his father's condition and stays with him in the hospital.

The most heartbreaking scene is when Bill comes out of the hospital and is left as if he has no emotions, totally empty. While they have dinner, Wes asks him how he feels, if the therapy has worked for him and Bill just replies in a very robotic and unenthusiastic way that maybe nothing works for some people. That's when Wes breaks down and tells him that he's already lost his mother and if he's going to lose his father too. He verbatim tells her, "Just say it. You want to die. Then do it already." But he doesn't mean it, he just speaks from helplessness and pain at the thought of losing the only person who has been important in his life besides his mother, and not knowing how to help him.

After this, the same day that Wes has the most important race in his high school, Bill remembers the conversation with his son and makes the decision that it is time to let his wife go and starts packing everything that were her belongings, also leaving together both wedding rings in a small box and there he breaks down in tears because he knows he can't hold on anymore, that he has his son and he must worry about him and his own life.

In the end Bill arrives at his son's competition, which he won, they have an emotional moment where they embrace and it is like time for both of them to resume their relationship as father and son and live life in spite of what happened.

Jacy and Wes have a talk where she confesses to him that Professor Carine offered to help her in her recovery process due to her self-injuries and that she wants to give herself a chance with him and know that maybe they could have a nice relationship, where they both understand each other because of what they have been through in their lives.

Bill and Carine meet again and he invites her on a double date, along with Wes and Jacy and the movie ends with them on a road under a sunset laughing and I was happy it ended that way.

Opinion:

The loss of a loved one can affect so much that mental health is compromised, that is where you need to have that support network that encourages you to seek help. It is not easy, depression is a very serious illness, in this case it ended well, but for other people it is not so. The issue of grief, the problems of adolescence and adulthood, parental divorce and self-injury as in Lacy's case and the darkness that is experienced in these situations is something that must be taken very seriously.

There are so many people going through extremely difficult situations, hiding behind a smile, behind anger, behind a job, behind problems that maybe those who are close to them can't notice because sometimes depression, anxiety or any other disorder can be confused with "that's just the way he is" or "he just needs more friends", "he doesn't do his part" and the worst "he has no willpower".

Talking more about these issues is fair and necessary, mental health problems are real, it can happen to anyone regardless of their background or economic power. Because you never know when it can happen to you, no one is exempt from living something like this. Do not keep quiet, it is difficult, it is hard, but you can get through it with the help of professionals and your support network.

You can watch this movie on YouTube, Cuevana and other pages of movies online.

Thank you for reading me and I hope you take the time to watch this movie, it only lasts 1:35, but it is worth the message it leaves. There are always other days, other people, other things to discover and that can change your life for the better, remember you are not alone. 🫂♥️
