Obsession, a supernatural horror film and one of this year’s biggest box office hits, was directed, written, and edited by Curry Barker, who, like other contemporary directors and screenwriters, began his career creating content on YouTube. In this film, we follow the story of “Baron Bailey,” a shy young man who is a good friend but also a loner, and who is completely in love with “Nikki.” Unfortunately, Baron cannot muster the courage to express his feelings, and that frustration leads him to make a wish that, when granted, has serious consequences.
Although I didn’t fully enjoy “Milk & Serial” (2024), the first film directed by Baker, I think that this time around he offers not only a solid story but also excellent direction, creating uncomfortable and terrifying moments stemming from a desire that unleashes a toxic relationship. The lighting—which remains quite subdued regardless of the film’s timeline—and the predominance of colors like black, brown, and muted orange lend themselves perfectly to creating settings that enhance the film’s narrative. The editing is also perfect because the jump-scare scenes don’t require a character to be actively facing a potential danger—they’re spontaneous. Add to that the sound design, which is crucial in many scenes for heightening the sense of unease and, believe me, it’s truly terrifying.
The story, without any pretense, attempts to explore the desires and expectations that people may develop when they fall in love; that intense need to feel loved can potentially lead to a relationship that is anything but healthy. It is precisely this aspect—which touches on the protagonist’s mental health—that caught my attention, because the story is told from the perspective of “Baron,” who, due to his loneliness, displays great vulnerability and even cowardice—a trait that, in my opinion, plays a major role in his motives for asking for what many would consider a trivial desire, but Baker decided to explore—or rather, delve deeper into—that desire and created a horror story in which the supposedly harmless wish for unconditional love becomes something utterly terrifying.
The highlight, along with what I’ve already mentioned, is the performances of the lead actors; both Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette are perfect in their roles. It’s worth noting that this is the first time I’ve seen either of them act, and I really like how committed they were to bringing these characters to life—where Johnston might be seen as a victim of his own desire; in that regard, I find his performance convincing, shifting from happiness to naivety and then to despair because of the love “Nikki” provides him—a character who, in her various stages, is very well portrayed by Navarrette, as she is the one who takes center stage; she is terrifying enough that I can’t help but highlight her work. I was completely impressed not only by her mood swings and constant gestures, but also by her vocal projection—an important element of her performance; there’s no doubt that all the attention she’s garnered is more than understandable.
Obsession, like the last two movies I’ve reviewed—Backrooms and Budy—is unique in that it creates horror through a sense of unease, but I think Baker’s film, despite its use of the supernatural, features scenes that could actually happen in some people’s everyday lives, and that’s what really caught my attention. The portrayal of a toxic couple was what I found most terrifying, and I think it features one of the best villains I’ve seen this year. Just as I have high hopes for Parsons’s upcoming projects, the same goes for Baker, and I think it’s great that I won’t have to wait long to see something new from this young director, since a few days ago he premiered a short film called “Mama Bear” on his YouTube channel—a film that has sparked theories about its connection to his previous works or his next movie, set to be released in 2027.
