Plot
The movie begins inside a messy apartment in New York City, where we see a man sleeping and receiving a phone call, which he answers. When he answers, we learn it’s his father calling him by his first name, Sonny. His father sounds quite disappointed in him because of the life he’s leading—at 32 years old, he hasn’t pursued a career in the field he studied in law school. Instead, he leads a life free of obligations, doing whatever he wants and working only once a week.
Trama

Trailer & Review

Here's the trailer for the movie:

Here’s another one of the very few priceless and underrated gems in Adam Sandler’s entire filmography. While it’s true that most of Sandler’s comedy films are aimed at a fairly specific adult audience, there are also other films that have a much more “family-friendly” tone and sense of humor. And that’s the case with Big Daddy, a film that blends comedy with drama—something that hadn’t been done before and wouldn’t be the only time it happened. It has some great moments and a heartwarming story that I personally highly recommend watching.
I remember very well the times I watched this movie as a preteen on the cable TV channels I used to watch quite often. I remember the good times I had back then and that absurd humor that has become so closely associated with Adam Sandler, along with performances and a plot that were quite engaging. But before I even realized all of this, the first things that caught my attention were Sandler’s performance, the funny moments, and the film’s excellent soundtrack.

Something I’ve realized, by the way—and before I continue with my review—is the indirect yet precise way that Adam Sandler’s movies have influenced my taste in ’80s music. The thing is, what’s always fascinated me about all his movies are the songs featured in them, which transport us back to that golden age of the ’80s. Getting back to Big Daddy, its main draw is its somewhat unique plot—one that’s quite characteristic of any movie co-written by and starring Sandler.
In this movie, we see him play Sonny Koufax, the son of a renowned lawyer who went on to study at law school but never graduated as a lawyer, much less followed in his father’s footsteps. Instead, he’s a slacker who barely works once a week and lives off the settlement from a car accident he was in a long time ago. At the beginning of the movie, we see him living with his girlfriend Vanessa, who’s also tired of watching him waste his life sleeping, watching TV, and going out for drinks every now and then with his old college friends.

Vanessa threatens to break up with Sonny if he doesn’t decide what to do with his future. Tired of responsibilities, a grueling job, and a life full of obligations, he decides to seize the opportunity that came his way by chance one day when a five-year-old boy is brought to his apartment, claiming to be the son of his old friend, Kevin Gerrity. To make matters worse, Kevin had gotten engaged to his girlfriend, Corinne, the day before the arrival of this boy named Julian McGrath. From here on, we see our irresponsible, aimless protagonist trying to take responsibility for a young child.
Up to this point, we’ve seen only a few sides of Adam Sandler on the big screen. From acting like a 30-year-old child to now raising a real 5-year-old, this is a rather interesting twist on how we’ve come to see this great comedian perform—though he doesn’t stray far from his signature style of playing an irresponsible, foul-mouthed, temperamental, and sometimes somewhat childish character. However, one thing that does set him apart from the roles we’ve seen so far is that Sonny Koufax isn’t just an idiot or an immature person with mental health issues.

Here, the protagonist is this irresponsible and aimless for much of the movie because he wants to be that way and chose to be so after years of living with his father, whom we see was strict and quite demanding of him—both in his studies and in almost every aspect of his life. We even see that he studied law to follow in his father’s footsteps, even though it’s something he never liked—and we see this from the very first minute of the movie. Even so, we see that he still makes the same old mistakes—like falling in love with or dating someone who has no interest in him because he’s a good-for-nothing, for example.
Clearly, the romance angle has always been something Adam Sandler excels at—he’s the one who always ends up with the pretty girl in the movie—but just as in The Wedding Singer, we can expect a somewhat similar story here when it comes to romance. But the main focus of the movie isn’t this; rather, it’s how a five-year-old boy completely changes his life, making him see with his own eyes and through his own experiences that raising a child isn’t easy—especially if you’re someone who doesn’t work, doesn’t take care of yourself, and does whatever you want.

But the main turning point comes when we see that things don’t always go as well as one might expect, and how reality—your past, your decisions, and even your mistakes—affect the people who truly love you, and you see how they’re forced to distance themselves from you for their own good. Throughout the entire hour-and-a-half-long film, we see a mix of satirical humor, absurd humor, and even visual comedy—with the typical falls and bumps that make even a five-year-old laugh—alongside a story that gradually becomes more dramatic and meaningful as it builds toward its grand finale.
It’s not surprising to see how the film itself reminds us time and again just how immature, irresponsible, and aimless the protagonist is. Especially at the end, when we see him facing the very law he’s been trying to avoid ever since he dropped out of law school. Clearly, both the screenplay and the “magic of cinema” itself lead us to a happy and satisfying ending. But even so, I really liked that ending—not only because it comes as close as possible to what would actually happen in a similar real-life case, but also because we see a resolution and conclusion that’s quite moving.

I’m not entirely sure why, but I suppose it’s both because of all the funny, entertaining, exciting, and happy moments Sony and Julian shared throughout the movie, as well as the way they break up and get back together. I’ll admit that there were even a few scenes toward the end of this movie that really moved me and might have brought a tear to my eye if it weren’t for the signature humor they weave into every scene. But that doesn’t make it overwhelmingly absurd to watch—quite the opposite, in fact.
This movie also features excellent performances, including that of the great Adam Sandler, who demonstrates his talent for both comedy and drama. Watching him transform from an irresponsible drifter into the best dad in the world—the kind everyone would want to have—is fascinating. We also have young Julian McGrath, played by the Sprouse twins, who did a pretty good job. Among other characters we get to see, they stand out as always for their personalities and funny moments, of course.

Last but not least, let’s now talk about the audiovisual aspects of this film. As we’ve seen in Adam Sandler’s previous films, this type of movie isn’t a blockbuster, nor does it feature direction that revolutionizes the world of cinema—far from it. Sandler’s films are known for their modest production values and, at the same time, for generating very strong box office numbers upon release. In this case, the film is directed by someone who has worked with Sandler before and has done a decent job.
From the cinematography—the shots of New York City, the motion effects, the simple transitions, and the warm, well-lit color palette—everything is quite solid. The same goes for the sound effects, which even manage to take center stage in a few scenes throughout the film. The work on the costumes and other props and elements that make up each scene in our protagonist’s apartment is truly remarkable—that’s all I’ll say. And as I mentioned earlier, what I liked most about this movie is its excellent soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the comedy and drama genres.
