Plot
The third season begins by showing us the Curia of the Great Special Chair of Fire, where the great Raffles III summons Captain Burns to inform him that the Tokyo Empire will collaborate with the White Clothes. Raffles informs him that his next mission is to “turn the world into a single entity engulfed in flames.” Although Burns is hesitant at first, he later has a vision of the Evangelist and becomes fully convinced to follow the orders he received. This leads our team of firefighters to become enemies of the empire, and the captain is kidnapped.

I thought long and hard about whether or not to bring you this review, especially since I don’t usually review sequels to anime I haven’t reviewed before. I mean, since I typically review only anime that I watch as they air each season, reviewing a season of an anime that aired several years ago is something I don’t usually do. However, I do have my exceptions, and Fire Force is an anime I don’t want to overlook because it’s so great. Plus, its anime adaptation wrapped up earlier this year with the broadcast of the second half of its third season.
This means that now I can wholeheartedly and with complete confidence recommend Fire Force to you, since the series is complete. With just three seasons, it’s more than enough to dive into and enjoy a story that completely immerses us with its plot, its characters, its world-building, and its blend of action, comedy, and fantasy. At first, it seems like just another run-of-the-mill shōnen anime, with a distinctive protagonist we can relate to and a premise that’s quite appealing. But it’s not just that—its fight scenes are simply unforgettable.
Estuve pensando mucho en su traerles esta reseña o no, especialmente porque no acostumbro a hacer una reseña de una continuación de un anime que no he reseñado antes. O sea, como suelo reseñar puros animes que veo en emisión cada temporada, reseñar una temporada de un anime que se ha emitido hace ya varios años atrás es algo que no acostumbro a hacer. Sin embargo, tengo mis excepciones y Fire Force es un anime que no quiero dejar pasar por alto debido a lo grandioso que es. Eso y que a principios de este año finalizó su adaptación animada con la emisión de su segunda parte de su tercera temporada.
Esto quiere decir que ahora sí les puedo recomendar sin duda alguna y con total confianza Fire Force ya que está completo. Con solo tres temporadas ya es más que suficiente para poder adentrarnos y disfrutar de una historia que nos envuelve completamente con su trama, sus personajes, su construcción del mundo y su mezcla de acción con comedia y fantasía. Al principio parece ser un anime shōnen más del montón, con un protagonista característico con el que podemos familiarizarnos y una premisa que atrae bastante. No solo es eso, sino que también sus peleas son simplemente inolvidables.

Fire Force became well-known not only for being the official prequel to Soul Eater, but also for its fight scenes—especially those in its second season, where the animation reached its peak. Its premise is simple: a world where people transform into fire-based creatures and a young man who becomes a firefighter to save people. However, in this world, firefighters don’t save people with water—they use pyrotechnic powers. To keep things from getting too complicated, let’s just say that whatever turns people into fire monsters is the same thing that gives these firefighters their powers.
Some need fire to use their powers, while others can generate fire without needing a source. Our protagonist is in the second group, obviously, though he isn’t as powerful as certain captains. However, his great spirit and his desire to become a “hero” are the source of all his power. While the anime’s script works in his favor—as you’d expect from any generic protagonist—you have to admit that Shinra is a protagonist with quite admirable character development. He’s positive, decisive, and stubborn enough to change his worldview.
Fire Force llegó a ser reconocido, no solo por ser la precuela oficial de Soul Eater, sino también por sus escenas de peleas, sobre todo de las de su segunda temporada donde la animación alcanzó su punto máximo. Su premisa es simple: un mundo donde la gente se transforma en criaturas con fuego y un joven que se convierte en bombero para así salvar a la gente. Sin embargo, aquí los bomberos no salvan a la gente con agua, sino con poderes pirotécnicos. Para no complicar mucho las cosas, digamos que eso que convierte a la gente en monstruos hechos de fuego es lo mismo que les da poderes a estos bomberos.

Si bien el guión del anime está a su favor, como se espera de cualquier protagonista genérico, hay que admitir que Shinra es un protagonista con un desarrollo bastante admirable. The anime constantly strives to give us plenty of action scenes, comedy, and lots of fantasy elements. The latter is another thing I really like about this anime, especially because it’s not the same kind of fantasy we’ve seen or talked about before. No medieval worlds, dragons, monsters, adventurers, or anything like that. It’s a type of fantasy that experiments with a power scale that’s somewhat difficult to grasp at first, but once you do, it becomes quite fascinating because of the way the creator uses imagination and draws on an alternate dimension that defies all laws and logic, even going so far as to test reality itself.
Now you understand why I love this anime so much. It’s not just because of the fascinating action scenes, the excellent power dynamics, and the way certain powers are used. It’s also because of all the “lore” or backstory that unfolds in this world—connecting the firefighters’ source of power to the catastrophes that occur and the villains’ objectives in the series—which is absolutely top-notch. In this third and final season, we see how that world comes together and gradually transforms, but I don’t want to give any spoilers to those who haven’t seen it yet.
El anime lucha constantemente por darnos muchas escenas de acción, comedia y muchos elementos de fantasía. Esto último es otra cosa que me gusta mucho de este anime, sobre todo porque no es el mismo tipo de fantasía que hemos visto o hablado antes. Nada de mundos medievales, dragones, monstruos, aventureros ni nada de eso. Es un tipo de fantasía que experimenta con una escala de poder un tanto difícil de entender, pero que luego de hacerlo te llega a fascinar bastante debido a la forma en la que el creador de esta obra utiliza la imaginación y la fuente de una dimensión alterna que desafía toda ley y toda lógica llegando incluso a poner a prueba a la realidad misma.
Ya entienden ahora por qué me gusta tanto este anime. No solo son por las fascinantes escenas de acción, la excelente escala de poderes y la forma en la que utilizan algunos dicho poder. Sino que también todo ese “lore” o historia que se desarrolla en este mundo y que conecta tanto con la fuente de poder de los bomberos como también las catástrofes que hay y el objetivo que tienen los villanos en esta serie es de lo mejor. En esta tercera y última temporada vemos cómo dicho mundo se conecta y se transforma poco a poco, pero no quiero darles ningún spoiler para los que aún no lo han visto.

Another thing I really like about this anime is its characters, who are hard to forget. I’m not just talking about the protagonist, who, by the way, has a classic villain’s smile and is known as the “demon” at school because of his appearance. There’s also the rest of the group from Fire Department Company 8, which includes Shinra Kusakabe. We have the blond, schizophrenic colleague who thinks he’s a knight named Arthur Boyle; the young and powerful colleague named Maki Oze; the serious and responsible lieutenant named Takehisa Hinawa; the beautiful and innocent nun named Iris; and the squad captain named Akitaru Ōbi.
Every character and member of this team has their own story and arc throughout the anime. None of the episodes dedicated to getting to know these characters more deeply are boring in the least. What’s more, this anime also offers the pleasure of a pace that’s easy to follow, keeping you on the edge of your seat while entertaining you thoroughly at the same time. We could even say that the anime sometimes plays with drama, but in a unique way without becoming too intense or tear-jerking. I’ve left out many other character names who have gone down in history for their traits, personalities, or striking fighting styles.
Otra cosa que me gusta mucho de este anime son sus personajes, los cuales son difíciles de olvidar. No solo lo digo por el protagonista quien tiene por cierto una sonrisa típica de villano y una reputación de llamarlo “demonio” en la escuela debido a su apariencia. También está el resto del grupo de la Compañía 8 de bomberos donde se encuentra Shinra Kusakabe. Tenemos al compañero rubio y esquizofrénico que se cree caballero llamado Arthur Boyle, la joven y poderosa compañera llamada Maki Oze, el teniente serio y responsable llamado Takehisa Hinawa, la hermosa e inocente monja llamada Iris y el capitán del escuadrón llamado Akitaru Ōbi.
Cada personaje y miembro de este equipo tiene su historia y su desarrollo a lo largo de este anime. Ninguno de los episodios dedicados a conocer más a fondo a estos personajes es para nada aburrido. Es más, este anime también tiene ese placer de poder disfrutar de un ritmo que es fácil de seguir y que te mantiene en expectación y te entretiene bastante al mismo tiempo. One example that’s impossible to overlook is the case of the clumsy, brand-new, and careless ex-priestess named Tamaki Kotstsu. Regarding this character, I’d like to take this opportunity to mention that one of the negative aspects (which many who’ve watched this anime and didn’t like it have pointed out) is that it contains a certain amount of Fanservice. The upside is that much of this Fanservice is centered on Tamaki because of her “curse”—those interested in finding out what it is can discover it by watching the anime. They don’t overuse this trope; it’s reserved for specific comedic moments.
The anime also isn’t immune to certain clichés typical of action anime, such as the protagonist who always arrives too late to “save the world” and all that. But even with these clichés, this anime also features scenes that are fascinating, satisfying, and a joy to watch, thanks to that blend of clichés with a story and characters that are easy for us to relate to and identify with. Despite its humor and fantasy elements—all of which are original and quite creative—the anime also tackles some pretty interesting themes, some of which are even quite profound.
Un ejemplo que no es es imposible dejar pasar es el caso de la torpe, flamante y descuidada ex-sacerdotisa llamada Tamaki Kotstsu. Con respecto a este personaje aprovecho para mencionarles que uno de los detalles negativos (que para muchos de los que han visto este anime y que no les ha gustado esto) es que posee cierta cantidad de Fanservice. Lo positivo de esto es que gran parte de dicho Fanservice está centrado en Tamaki debido a su “maldición” que, los que estén interesados en saber cuál es pueden descubrirlo viendo el anime. A pesar de su estilo de humor y sus elementos de fantasía todo originales y bastante creativos, el anime también trata ciertos temas bastante interesantes y algunos hasta profundos.

When the plot shifts its focus to telling us about “Adolla” and all the mysticism behind it, the more questions we ask ourselves, the more interesting everything becomes. There comes a point in the story where they show you so many things—so many elements, so many characters (some with backstories that could be traumatic for more than a few viewers), and a variety of complex themes—that it’s hard not to want to keep watching more and more until you reach the end. That ending, while not one of the best out there, has a somewhat unique way of tying up certain plot threads and concluding the story with a display of power and supremacy that’s almost absurd to watch.
However, it looks good; in fact, everything that happens at the end is entertaining and even enjoyable to watch. It’s not an anime that sets out to answer every question we might have while watching it, but rather it shows us the story of a world plunged into despair—and that we can only overcome that despair with hope itself. In short, this is the lesson it leaves us with at the end, and it’s more than worth watching the entire series for that alone. Ultimately, what stands out most about this anime are its battles, but this struggle between good and evil in this world is among the best I’ve seen in many years.
Cuando la trama llega a centrarse en contarnos sobre el “Adolla” y todo el misticismo que hay detrás de esto, más preguntas nos hacemos y más interesante se vuelve todo. Llega un punto en la historia en la que te muestran tantas cosas, tantos elementos, tantos personajes (algunos con historias que pueden llegar a traumar a más de uno) y una variedad de temas complejos que es difícil no querer ver más y más hasta llegar al final. Dicho final, si bien no es de los mejores que existen, tiene una forma un tanto particular de cerrar ciertos puntos de la trama y concluir la misma historia con una demostración de poder y supremacía que es hasta absurdo de ver.
Sin embargo, se ve bien, incluso llega a ser entretenido y hasta agradable de ver todo lo que sucede al final. No es un anime que busque darle respuesta a todas las preguntas que nos hagamos al verla, sino que nos muestra la historia de un mundo sumido en la desesperación y que solo podemos vencer dicha desesperación con la misma esperanza. En resumen, ésta es la lección que nos deja al final y que vale toda la pena del mundo verla por completo. Al final, lo que más destaca este anime son sus batallas, pero dicha lucha del bien contra el mal en este mundo es de lo mejor que he visto después de tantos años.

Last but not least, we have to talk about the audiovisual aspects of this marvelous anime. David Production did a spectacular job with this animated adaptation. Starting with the creator’s signature art style—he made a name for himself decades ago with Soul Eater. We see that same art style, character design, and aesthetic approach again in Fire Force, but in a somewhat more elaborate and eye-catching way. Not only do the character designs stand out, but so do the various camera angles featured throughout the anime’s three seasons.
I love that the studio didn’t rely heavily on 3D animation or CGI for certain scenes. Most of the battles or scenes packed with action, movement, and fluidity seem to have been drawn by hand, which is fascinating. The visual effects, color palettes, and various settings—whether created by hand or by computer—are exceptionally well done. Their fluidity and level of detail are top-notch, yes, but something that surpasses even the animation itself are the sound effects. These effects resonate with you and practically shatter your eardrums in certain iconic scenes. The soundtrack isn’t far behind either, especially the opening themes, which are fascinating.
Personally, I give it a well-deserved rating of 9.5/10 in the action, fantasy, and comedy genres.
Por último, pero no menos importante, tenemos que hablar ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta maravilla de anime. David Production hizo un trabajo espectacular con esta adaptación animada. Empezando por el estilo de dibujo tan característico del creador quien ya se ha hecho una fama hace décadas atrás con Soul Eater. Dicho estilo de dibujo, diseño de personajes y estilos que maneja lo vemos de nuevo en Fire Force de una manera un tanto más elaborada y llamativa. No solo destacan los diseños de los personajes, sino también los distintos planos que tiene este anime a lo largo de sus tres temporadas.
Me encanta que el estudio no haya recurrido mucho a la animación en 3D o CGI para ciertas escenas. La mayoría de batallas o escenas con tanta acción, movimiento y fluidez parece haber sido hecha a mano, lo cual es fascinante. Los efectos visuales, las paletas de colores, los diferentes escenarios creados ya sea a mano o por computadora están muy bien hechos. Su fluidez y nivel de detalles es de lo mejor, si, pero algo que supera incluso la misma animación que tiene este anime son los efectos de sonido. Dichos efectos que te resuenan y te rompen los tímpanos en ciertas escenas icónicas. La banda sonora tampoco se queda atrás, sobre todo sus openings que son fascinantes.
Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de acción, fantasía y comedia.
