Plot
The movie begins with a home video of a group of kids trying to pull a prank over the phone. The same boy appears repeatedly in the other videos pulling similar pranks while we watch them laugh among themselves. Then we see the same boy, now an adult, waking up in his enormous bed in his luxurious mansion. He heads to the doctor’s office, but along the way, people approach him to ask for photos. They call him George Simmons, and he appears to be a famous actor as well as a comedian. When he arrives and is greeted by his doctor, the doctor delivers the tragic news that he has Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Something that has been clear to me for a long time is what many people say about comedy actors who take on roles in dramatic films. But I believe there are very few actors who manage to balance both genres as naturally and perfectly as the film I’m featuring today does. Adam Sandler is already well known on this blog as a true comedy genius—someone who knows how to make us laugh and who isn’t afraid to tackle controversial topics or poke fun at all kinds of people or communities to give us an entertaining story full of laughs.
But with Funny People, something different happens, as we could consider this film a dramatic portrayal of his life as an actor and comedian. Adam Sandler isn’t just trying to make us laugh here; he’s also trying to convey everything that a person like him feels, experiences, and faces every day. If we take a closer look at the many similarities between this movie’s plot and Adam Sandler’s past life, it’s clear that he used himself as a reference for the director to create this story. However, instead of praising him for what a great comedian and actor he is, the opposite actually happens.
And he pulls it off in a way that isn’t quite as gloomy, but also not as absurd as we’re used to seeing in his other comedy films. In fact, the humor in this film is very different from the satirical, physical, and adult-oriented humor we’ve seen in his previous films. The humor in Funny People is dark humor—the kind that plays directly with death and gives us moments that are supposed to make us laugh, despite how uncomfortable we feel hearing them. This is to be expected, not only because he’s a failed comedian and actor, but also because of the news he receives from his doctor in the first few minutes of the movie. George learns that he has AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) and that he’ll be treated with experimental drugs that have a very low success rate. He’s given no guarantee that he’ll survive, which completely discourages our comedian. Even so, on his way home, people stop him to ask for a photo, and although he’s feeling down because of the news, he decides to smile for his fans anyway.
Next, we see him attend a Stand-Up Comedy show where we’ll also see our co-star perform. She’s a woman in her twenties named Aira Wright, who aspires to be a comedian and spends her free time writing jokes. There, she meets the famous George Simmons in person, after using him as material for her comedy routine. But despite his mood, George tells Aira that she does have a talent for writing jokes. The next day, he calls her and asks her to write jokes for him, which leads Aira to quickly develop a somewhat complicated relationship with George.
In addition to seeing and getting to know the dark, depressive, lonely, and uncomfortable side of George Simmons, we’ll also witness the very unique relationship he has with the young Aira Wright. It’s entertaining to watch George and Aira spend time together working on new jokes and putting on shows, while Aira keeps our famous, depressed comedy actor company every night before he goes to sleep. The most interesting aspect of this relationship between comedians is the striking contrast between George Simmons’s personality and Aira Wright’s. On one hand, we have a famous actor and comedian with a long career, yet one who is completely lonely, depressed, and full of regret about his life; on the other hand, we have a young, inexperienced, shy, introverted man struggling with self-esteem issues.
Not only do we get a glimpse into the life of a famous actor and comedian like George Simmons, but we also gain a distinct and quite nuanced perspective on how death can make you reflect and change completely. However, the second half of this film shows us more than just the typical dramatic story where the protagonist receives the news that he has only a few days left to live, becomes depressed, reflects, changes, and then gets a “happy ending.” That’s not how it plays out in Funny People, since our protagonist, despite having come close to death, shows us that some people simply don’t change.
To avoid giving away too many spoilers, I’ll just say that a certain part of the movie shifts from depicting the life of a famous comedian who awaits his death with deep regret to becoming the story of a selfish, self-centered, and manipulative person whose plans never quite work out. What I like about this movie is that the main characters aren’t portrayed in a generic way; instead, in addition to their virtues and funny moments, we also see their flaws and mistakes. Not just because it’s part of the joke, but because that’s the point of the story being told here.

The character we’re most likely to empathize with is Aira Wright, who represents the entire generation that grew up (or rather, we grew up) watching George Simmons’ movies (something we’ve all done with Adam Sandler’s films). What’s interesting is how well she embodies that generation of fans. She also goes from being a fan who’s surprised and thrilled to be working with her favorite comedian to later becoming disappointed in her idol because of the decisions he makes. Personally, I consider myself a bit like Aira in real life, and only those who’ve seen this movie at least once—like me—will understand.
I also really like the type of humor the movie uses from start to finish, ranging from typical stand-up jokes to raw, direct black humor that’s woven into some dramatic scenes. However, unlike Adam Sandler’s other comedy films, the balance between drama and comedy here is perfect—to the point where you hear a joke during a tense moment and smile, even though you feel like everything inside you is falling apart. Another type of humor that recurs frequently in this film is that of the typical cringeworthy clichés, most of which are delivered by Aira Wright.

Así es, George Simmons no es el típico protagonista genérico que espera que empaticemos con él, sino todo lo contrario. Lo máximo que esperamos hacer es reírnos o lamentarnos por su estado físico y emocional en la primera mitad de la película.

Another thing I also like about this movie is that it tackles very heavy themes, despite its dark, adult humor. Aside from death, we also see themes related to suffering or lamenting the past, the fear of loneliness, not being happy despite fame and fortune, and how that fame and fortune negatively affect a person. All of this, combined with an excellent cast of actors who don’t get much attention (just like the movie itself), features geniuses like Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and even Eric Bana. Every character in this cast undergoes noticeable character development.
And to top it all off, I’ll wrap up by mentioning the excellent audiovisual production work in Funny People. Although we only have one other film as a reference to gauge the work of the director behind this project, it’s more than enough to appreciate his talent for creating dramatic settings and atmospheres—without ever losing sight of the humor. Whether it’s dark, awkward, physical, or adult humor, the film manages to balance these elements perfectly throughout every minute of the movie thanks to its excellent production and the effects it employs.
The cinematography, the shots, the motion effects, the grayish color palette, and the excellent use of light and shadow are top-notch. The same goes for the practical visual effects and sound design. While it’s true that some CGI scenes look terrible, that’s actually the intention. The soundtrack also adds a fascinating touch, effectively setting the mood for each scene and filling it with messages and subtle hints through melancholic—and even slightly somber—songs. In short, this is one of Adam Sandler’s most underrated films, but it’s not for everyone—just a heads-up.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the drama and comedy genres.
Otra cosa que también me gusta de esta película es que trata temas muy densos, a pesar de su humor negro y para adultos. Aparte de la muerte, también vemos temas relacionados a sufrir o lamentarse por el pasado, el temor a la soledad, no ser feliz a pesar de la fama y fortuna y cómo dicha fama y fortuna afecta negativamente a una persona. Todo esto, sumado con un elenco excelente de actores que tampoco se habla mucho (al igual que la película como tal) donde vemos a genios como Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill y hasta Eric Bana. Todos los personajes de todo este elenco poseen un desarrollo que se puede notar.
Y para más inri, voy a finalizar hablándoles del excelente trabajo de producción audiovisual que posee Funny People. A pesar de solo tener una película como referencia para conocer el trabajo del director que se hizo cargo aquí, es más que suficiente para saber el talento que tiene para crear entornos y ambientes dramáticos, pero sin dejar de lado el humor. Ya sea humor negro, incómodo, físico o para adultos; dicha película los llega a matizar muy bien en cada minuto de eta cinta debido a su excelente producción y efectos que utilizan.
La fotografía, los planos, los efectos de movimiento, la paleta grisácea de colores y el excelente uso de luces y sombras son de lo mejor. Lo mismo ocurre con los efectos visuales prácticos y efectos de sonido. Aunque sí es cierto que algunas escenas con CGI se ven pésimas, pero esa es la intención. La banda sonora también le da un plus fascinante, logrando ambientar muy bien cada escena y llenándolo de mensajes e indirectas con canciones melancólicas y hasta un poco lúgubres. En fin, esta es de las películas más infravaloradas de Adam Sandler, pero tampoco es para todo el mundo, aviso.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género del drama y la comedia.
