Plot
The movie begins by showing us various scenes inside a house in San Diego where a couple appears to live. The guy’s name is Micah, and he’s testing out his new video camera. His girlfriend, Katie, comes home from school and asks him how much the camera cost while he’s filming her. They both talk about a certain “situation” that’s going on and how the camera will help them record all kinds of activity that corroborates everything they might experience in this house, where it seems they’ve been living for only a very short time. After dinner and getting ready for bed, they set everything up to position the camera where it can capture the entire room and the background.

This is one of the most memorable and unforgettable horror movies from my childhood and teenage years. In fact, I’m really surprised that I haven’t reviewed it on my blog before, given how much I’ve wanted to talk about it. Actually, this eagerness isn’t just about this movie, but also about its sequels—the ones I remember watching countless times on TV since I was a child and preteen. Even back then, I thought they were among the movies that scared me the most because of their supernatural content and well-executed jump scares. It’s funny to say this, knowing full well that I also watched gory movies back then.
But if there’s one thing I can confirm as I write this, it’s that—for a simple hour-and-a-half Found Footage horror film—it still generates the same level of suspense and fear it did back then. While it’s common to see it in the film world today, back then, Found Footage was an audiovisual technique that revolutionized the way horror movies were made. This is evident when you look at the massive franchise that emerged following the enormous success of Paranormal Activity in theaters. Not only that, but it also served as inspiration for other horror and suspense films.

Es más, me sorprende muchísimo el hecho de que no le haya hecho una reseña antes para mí blog con las ganas que tenía de hablar de ella. En realidad, estás ganas no solo son con esta película, sino también con sus secuelas, las que más recuerdo haber visto incontables veces en la televisión desde que era niño y preadolescente. Incluso en esa época pensaba que eran de las películas que más miedo me daban por su contenido sobrenatural y jumpscares bien montados. Es gracioso decir esto aún sabiendo que también veía películas con contenido gore en aquella época.
Pero si de algo puedo confirmar al momento de escribirles esto es que, para ser una simple cinta de terror de hora y media de metraje encontrado, sigue generando el mismo nivel de suspenso y miedo que daba en aquella época. Si bien hoy en día es común verlo en el mundo del cine, en aquel entonces el metraje encontrado (Found Footage) fue un recurso audiovisual que revolucionó la manera de hacer películas de terror. Esto se puede comprobar al ver la enorme franquicia que crearon luego del enorme éxito que tuvo Paranormal Activity en cines. No solo eso, sino que también fue motivo de inspiración de otras películas de terror y suspenso.

Despite having a predictable plot that’s very typical of today’s horror films, what made an impact at the time—and still manages to throw in the occasional surprise—is its audiovisual presentation and how well-crafted it is. Paranormal Activity is about a couple who gradually begin to be haunted by strange occurrences in their new home. Because of this, the husband decides to buy a semi-professional camera to record—both on video and audio—everything that happens in their house, especially at night when they go to sleep. Things start to escalate after they invite a “psychic” into their home and try to “communicate” with whatever is there with them.
Personally, I think this movie manages to deliver exactly what it promises from the start. Keep in mind that I already had some idea of what it was about, so I watched it a few hours ago expecting nothing more than the occasional jump scare and little else. It’s not exactly the “scariest” movie of its time, but it’s true that it managed to make quite an impact on a significant audience back then—myself included. Even though I expected some kind of Jump Scare to appear during every scene of unsettling pause and silence in the movie, I still reacted instinctively.
A pesar de tener una trama predecible y muy típica en el cine de terror actual, lo que impactó en su momento y aún sigue generando una que otra sorpresa en su momento es su apartado audiovisual y lo bien hecha que está. Paranormal Activity trata sobre una pareja que empieza a ser acosada poco a poco por ciertas actividades en su nuevo hogar. Debido a esto, el marido decide comprarse una cámara semiprofesional para grabar tanto en vídeo como también en audio todo lo que ocurre en su casa, especialmente de noche cuando ellos se van a dormir. Las cosas empiezan a escalar luego de que invitan a un “psíquico” a su casa e intentan “comunicarse” con lo que sea que esté ahí con ellos.
Personalmente opino que esta película logra cumplir en su muy justa medida con todo lo que promete desde el principio. Recuerden que ya tenía alguna noción de qué trataba, así que llegué a verla hace pocas horas con dicha mentalidad de que solo me iba a sorprender por uno que otro susto y poco más. Tampoco es que sea la película “más aterradora” de la época, pero es cierto que logró impactar a un público considerable en su momento, incluyéndome incluso. Aún cuando esperaba que en cada escena de pausa y silencio inquietantes que tiene la película iba a aparecer una especie de Jump Scareare, igual reaccionaba inconscientemente.

Other than that, I don’t recommend expecting anything better written—either in the screenplay or the story—let alone characters that stand out for any good character development or anything of the sort. Both the plot and the story as a whole are as predictable as can be, even featuring the occasional cliché typical of haunted-house horror movies. The film’s limited cast of characters doesn’t allow us to focus our attention on anyone other than the couple living in this house. However, what did pique my curiosity was the past of the girl, Katie, who tells us at the beginning that these phenomena have been happening since she was very young.
I’d rather not accept the disappointing and predictable ending the film gives us—one that simply doesn’t provide a clear or concrete answer about the origin of everything that’s happening to them and leaves us with absolutely no hope at all. But since this is a supernatural horror film of this style, an ending as cold and predictable as this one is to be expected. I would have preferred to see what other ending they might have come up with for this film back when they were first producing it, but oh well. The theme of the supernatural and how it’s linked to something unknown and inexplicable is very common—it’s only natural to see it here.
De resto, no te recomiendo que esperes ver algo mejor escrito tanto en su guión como en su historia, ni mucho menos personajes que destaquen por algún buen desarrollo ni nada por el estilo. Tanto su trama como su historia en general llegan a ser de lo más predecibles posible, llegando incluso a tener uno que otro cliché típico de película de terror sobre casas embrujadas. El escaso elenco de personajes que tiene la película no nos permite centrar nuestra atención en más allá que en la pareja que vive en esta casa. Sin embargo, lo que sí me dio curiosidad es el pasado de la chica, Katie, quien al principio nos cuenta que estos fenómenos han estado sucediendo desde muy pequeña.
No quisiera aceptar el lamentable y predecible final que nos da la película, la cual simplemente no nos da una respuesta certera o concreta del origen de todo esto que les está ocurriendo y que simplemente nos deja sin ninguna esperanza en lo absoluto. Pero al tratarse de una película de terror sobrenatural de este estilo es de esperarse un final tan frío y predecible como éste. Me hubiera gustado más ver qué otro final le hubieran hecho a esta película en el momento en el que la estaban produciendo apenas, pero bueno. El tema de lo sobrenatural y cómo llegan a ligarlo con algo desconocido e inexplicable es muy común, lo cual es normal verlo aquí.

Any explanation or origin they might have given for this phenomenon would be a little more acceptable than the poor explanation they give us at the end. Whatever it is, I won’t deny that the sequence and order of events that take place in this house—and the way everything ends—blends very well with the mental and emotional state of the two main characters and everything they do to try to “confront” this phenomenon. Here we come to the point of discussing the useless and skeptical protagonist, Micah, who’s only interested in recording these paranormal activities for the sheer thrill and excitement, without any respect for the unknown or whatever might be in that place.
Another interesting aspect is the very obvious—and even comical—way in which this entity is portrayed; it’s supposedly not human and seems to be very fixated on Katie. Its level of obsession could easily be considered “harassment”—harassment from “the beyond,” one might say. I think that’s a thousand times more disturbing than the fact that it’s a real, flesh-and-blood stalker… although the occasional real-life case reveals quite the opposite. Be that as it may, this makes me chuckle a bit, to be honest—not out of morbid curiosity or anything like that, but because of the thought that everything this couple goes through in this movie is the fault of a paranormal being obsessed with Katie.

Otra cosa interesante es la manera tan evidente y hasta graciosa en la que nos pintan esta entidad, que según no es humana y que tal parece está muy apretado a Katie. Su nivel de obsesión puede fácilmente considerarse como “acoso”, un acoso del “más allá”, se podría decir. Creo que eso es mil veces más perturbador que el hecho de que sea un acosador real de carne y hueso… aunque uno que otro caso real nos revelan todo lo contrario. Sea como sea, me da un poco de risa esto, la verdad, no por morbo ni nada de eso, sino por el hecho de pensar que todo lo que vive esta pareja en esta película sea por culpa de un ser paranormal que está obsesionado con Katie.

Found Footage is an excellent technique for capturing the level of suspense, fear, and horror found in paranormal or supernatural stories. In the case of Paranormal Activity, it’s clear that this constant reliance on Found Footage is a testament to the level of suspense the filmmakers aim to convey—and they pull it off exceptionally well. But unlike other found footage horror classics such as The Blair Witch Project, this film doesn’t rely heavily on erratic or fast-moving camera work that might make you dizzy.
Pero bueno, ya creo que hablamos más que suficiente de lo que sucede en esta película y de su historia toda predecible y repleta de clichés. No solo eso, sino que también tenemos bien en claro que el punto fuerte y destacable de esta película es su apartado audiovisual. El que dirigió Paranormal Activity es el mismo que escribió su guión y que también la produjo. Incluso se encargó de la edición y fotografía de la misma, lo cual ya te digo yo que no es nada del otro mundo ya que, como podemos ver, el 100% del largometraje se grabó con puras cámaras semiprofesionales. Ese estilo casero y con casi nula edición y cortes es lo que hace más “natural” y “realista” esta historia.
El Metraje Encontrado (Found Footage) es un recurso excelente para capturar ese nivel de suspenso, miedo y horror que hay en historias paranormales o sobrenaturales. En el caso de Paranormal Activity es evidente que dicha dependencia de recurrir al metraje encontrado todo el tiempo es una muestra del nivel de suspenso que se busca transmitir, cosa que logran de una forma muy bien hecha. Pero a diferencia de otros clásicos del terror hechos con metraje encontrado como lo fueron The Blair Witch Project, aquí no abundan los escenarios o grabaciones con movimientos erráticos o acelerados que te pueden marear.

En cambio, lo que nos muestran aquí son escenarios con planos fijos en su mayoría o con muy poco movimiento. El objetivo de esto es enfocar la atención en lo que sucede alrededor del plano y cómo reacciona la pareja de protagonistas con dicha “actividad”. Suena de lo más sencillo, pero la forma en la que está grabada, junto con el excelente uso de luces, sombras, fotografía y paletas de colores naturales le dan un toque único a esta película. Todo esto sumado con un excelente uso de efectos de sonido que logran protagonizar gran parte de estos escenarios y jumpscares que nos dan, inclusive. El silencio es la “banda sonora” perfecta para esta película.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de terror sobrenatural.
