World War II is one of those dark chapters in history that we would all like to forget. Those tragic years left countless victims, and for many years, war films have shown us the horrors of war from different perspectives. However, this movie is very different from any documentary or action film on the front lines; it is not a story about soldiers but about the German people of that time.
Directed by Taika Waititi, "Jojo Rabbit" is what I would call "something unexpected and impressive" The film is set in Nazi Germany during the final days of World War II. The story introduces Johannes Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis), a lonely boy nicknamed "Jojo" whose imaginary friend is an absurd version of Adolf Hitler himself (played by Taika Waititi).
From ignorance, with this premise, the film could have been a tasteless disaster, but surprisingly, it turns out to be one of the most touching dramedies of the last decade.
Its brilliance lies not only in using satire to ridicule fascism but also in addressing childhood vulnerability and the influence many people experienced during indoctrination and massive political propaganda.
Through little Jojo, Nazism can be perceived as a scout club where everyone is welcome as long as they pledge loyalty. For a 10-year-old boy craving attention who just wants to have fun with friends, that doesn’t seem like a big deal. But even though Jojo sees it all as a game and knows its rules, he is still just a child who does not understand what he’s getting involved in.
Jojo’s fanaticism for the regime is like that of a child obsessed with superheroes, which is why his imaginary friend is the authority figure he admires most. His sense of belonging is a desperate attempt to be accepted by everyone around him. Once you understand the background, Jojo Rabbit’s story stops being just a comedy.
That caricatured and idealized vision clashes with the world’s reality when Jojo discovers that his kind mother, Rosie (Scarlett Johansson), in one of her warmest roles, is hiding Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie), a young Jewish girl, in their attic.
This encounter forces Jojo to unlearn the blind hatred he had been taught, marking the slow transition from comedy to emotional drama. This transformation happens so naturally that it can catch any viewer off guard. The genre gradually shifts until it becomes a true tragedy, and not many films have the ability to turn laughter into tears.
If I had to pick my favorite character, it would undoubtedly be Captain Klenzendorf (Sam Rockwell), because although he appears as a comic character with little initial relevance, his role in the main story transcends to make him memorable and admirable. He adds layers of complexity and steals every scene he’s in.
"Jojo Rabbit" is not simply satire; it is a powerful message about empathy and love, the only tools capable of tearing down the walls of intolerance. Memories of the past remain to remind us never to repeat the mistakes others made.
If you haven’t seen the film, you should give it a chance. It is a modern masterpiece, bold, and I believe it is very necessary as a reference for the future.
