When "Man of Steel" landed in theaters, no one had any idea of what was coming. This film not only had the task of modernizing the iconic superhero but its success depended on launching an entire cinematic universe. This movie lays the foundation by addressing two questions: Who is Superman? And what does Superman mean to the world?
Directed by Zack Snyder and backed by Christopher Nolan in production, the film departs significantly from the classic Superman seen in Christopher Reeve's saga. It places us in a modern world, not the seventies setting of the comics. During the first hour, we are introduced to Clark Kent, who, having abilities that set him apart from other humans, seeks his place in a world that would fear his powers before learning to admire him.
I believe we all know the story of the baby sent to planet Earth in a spaceship to become the perfect man: from childhood, Clark Kent has felt different from others for a reason he could not understand until he grew older and sought answers. When he realized his purpose was the greatest responsibility he could assume to honor his biological parents, he took on the role that would make him the best of two different worlds.
Unlike the last Superman movie set in a world of superheroes with a backstory, this film shows us the first superhero and the most powerful of all making the decision to be the world's savior. But being a role model and a symbol of hope is not an easy choice in a world that doesn’t allow you to be who you want to be.
After discovering who he is and why he came to our world, Clark must protect his home from the evil General Zod, a space conqueror of the same species as Superman who is determined to rule Earth.
This reinterpretation laid the stylistic and narrative foundations of the now-defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Snyder opted for a dark and gritty tone. The planet Krypton we witness in the opening minutes is a masterpiece of sci-fi production design, a massive visual scale characteristic of Snyder.
Just like the first season of a series, "Man of Steel" worked as the perfect narrative beginning for everything that followed. Snyder had a plan that would not overlook what happened in this film; Superman’s battle against General Zod in Metropolis was the event that triggered the main storyline of the DCEU.
What happened in "Man of Steel" brilliantly and directly justified the events in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016), and it also holds chronological importance in "The Flash" (2023).
Everything seen in the film planted the seeds for the eventual formation of the Justice League.
Henry Cavill established himself as the anchor of this universe; unfortunately, the honor of being Superman lasted a decade that was not well utilized.
His imposing portrayal of Kal-El gave DC a cinematic identity diametrically opposed to the lighthearted formula dominating the genre at that time.
Although criticized at the time for presenting a very serious Superman, the film has gained the recognition it deserves over time.
"Man of Steel" built a world where superheroes were simultaneously treated as messianic figures and weapons of mass destruction. Unfortunately, circumstances for developing subsequent productions were not favorable, as Zack Snyder’s vision was not accepted. With all its virtues and flaws, this film defined an unforgettable era in superhero cinema, which is why I recommend watching it at least once in your life.

Cuando el "Man of Steel" aterrizó en los cines, nadie tenia idea lo que se avecinaba. Esta cinta no solo tenía la tarea de modernizar al icónico superhéroe, sino que su éxito dependía el inicio todo un universo cinematográfico. Esta película plantea las bases tratando 2 preguntas: ¿Quien es Superman? ¿Y que significa superman para el mundo?
Dirigida por Zack Snyder y con el respaldo de Christopher Nolan en la producción, la película se aleja bastante del Superman clásico visto en la saga de Christopher Reeds. Nos situa en un mundo moderno, no setenteto como en los cómics. Durante la primera hora, se nos presenta a un Clark Kent que al tener habilidades que lo hacen diferente del resto de humanos, busca su lugar en un mundo que temería de sus capacidades antes de llegar a admirarlo.
Creo que todos nos conocemos la historia del bebé que fue enviado al planeta tierra en una nave espacial para convertirse en el hombre perfecto: desde niño, Clark Kent se ha sentido diferente a los demás por una razón que no pudo comprender hasta que se hizo mayor y fue en busca de respuestas, cuando supo que su propósito era la máxima responsabilidad que podía asumir para honrar a sus padres biológicos, asumió el rol que lo convertiría en lo mejor de 2 mundos diferentes.
A diferencia de la última película de Superman que está ambientada en un mundo de Superhéroes con un trasfondo, en esta cinta se nos muestra al primer Superhéroe y al más poderoso de todos para tomar la decisión de ser el salvador del mundo. Pero ser el ejemplo a seguir y el símbolo de la esperanza no es una decisión fácil en un mundo que no te permite ser quien quieres ser.
Tras descubrir quien es y para que vino a nuestro mundo, Clark tiene que proteger su hogar del malvado general Zod, un conquistador espacial de la misma especie de Superman que está determinado a gobernar la tierra.
Esta reinterpretación sentó las bases estilísticas y narrativas del ya extinto Universo Extendido de DC (DCEU). Snyder apostó por un tono oscuro y crudo. El planeta Krypton que presenciamos en los primeros minutos es un lujo de detalles del diseño de producción de ciencia ficción, es una escala visual enorme que caracteriza a Snyder.
Al igual que la primera temporada de una serie, "Man of Steel" funcionó como el inicio narrativo perfecto para todo lo que vendría después. Snyder tenía en mente un plan que no iba a pasar por alto lo ocurrido en esta cinta; La batalla de Superman contra el General Zod en Metrópolis fue el evento que desencadenó el hilo conductor del DCEU.
Lo ocurrido en "Man of Steel" justificó de manera brillante y directa los eventos en "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016), también tiene importancia cronológica en "The Flash" (2023)
Todo lo visto en la cinta fue sembrando las semillas para la eventual formación de la Liga de la Justicia.
Henry Cavill se consolidaba como el ancla de este universo, por desgracia, el honor de ser Superman le duró una década que no fue bien aprovechada.

Aunque fue una película criticada en su momento por presentar a un Superman muy serio, el tiempo le ha dado a la cinta el valor que se merece.
"Man of Steel" construyó un mundo donde los superhéroes eran tratados simultáneamente como figuras mesiánicas y armas de destrucción masiva. Desgraciadamente, las circunstancias para desarrollar las producciones posteriores no fueron muy favorables al no aceptar la visión de Zack Snyder. Con todas sus virtudes y defectos, está película definió una era inolvidable en el cine de superhéroes, por eso recomiendo verla aunque sea una vez en la vida.
