Here I am to review one of the best Italian series of recent years. This series was a punch in the stomach for me, because all of us Italians know and are ashamed of that terrible Italian cancer that is the Mafia. And this series reminds us all how horrible this criminal organization is especially towards women. Once upon a time a big lie was told and that is that the Mafia did not touch women and children but as we have seen over the years it is not true. This series tells the story of four brave women who decided to testify against the Mafia at their own risk and peril. It starts with the story of Denise Cosco played by the very talented Gaia Cirace who also acted incredibly well in the series My brilliant Friend, here she plays the daughter of an important mafioso Carlo Cosco and Lea Garofalo victim of the Mafia, she and her mother move under protection and suffer various attacks then one unfortunate day Lea Garofalo decides to meet her mafioso husband Carlo Cosco again and after that meeting she disappears. Denise is thus forced to return to her hometown with her father and his henchmen, one in particular Carmine Venturino follows her continuously, no one loses sight of her because they fear that she might talk to the police about her mother's disappearance. Denise does not believe in her disappearance, she knows how the mafia behaves with those who talk to the police and she rebels with great force against this system by following in her mother's footsteps and reporting.

Then there is the story of two other women witnesses, friends, both wives of members of the ndrangheta, Giuseppina Pesce involved in the gangs and in a miserable life made of insults, beatings and shady dealings one day decides to rebel and run away with her children, but the whole family is against her, including the children because that's how the mafia does it, it imprisons you even with your family and your children, if you report you are a traitor to the whole family. Even Maria Concetta Cacciola's family threatens her and holds her tight with guilt when she decides to report, Cacciola lives a recluse's life, she marries the mafioso Salvatore Figliuzzi at the age of thirteen at eighteen, has three children and her life is only home and school, takes a lot of beatings and tries to escape from her hell with the internet and an online relationship. These women are trapped at home by their own families, beaten, mistreated until they rebel but unfortunately the denunciations against the mafia are often paid with one's life. This is a strong and heartbreaking series, important because it reminds us of the courage of these women who paid dearly for their testimony.
It also shows us the mafia context in which they were born and raised, the habits, the emotional blackmail, the imprisonment, the domestic violence, the fear, the village life that becomes a prison for these women who did not choose to be born into the mafia but who chose to fight it. And they deserve all our respect and esteem.
La vida de Denise en el pueblo es una pesadilla. Quieren que se case joven, como es costumbre, porque así lo hace la mafia: las mujeres se casan muy jóvenes, como las otras testigos.
