Happy Friday, blog friends. I’m back to review a film that really struck me; it deals with very modern themes that are particularly relevant to current political discourse—especially here in Italy, where Islamophobia is a major issue. There are many Muslims here on Hive, and while I have nothing against the Islamic faith, like everyone else, I am frightened by Islamic extremism and terrorism. Let me tell you a bit about the plot: a young Belgian man of Arab descent begins to take a keen interest in Islam, even though his family has fully integrated into the Western lifestyle. He is a confused, vulnerable young man who falls under the sway of an Imam; the Imam manipulates him, convincing him that the extremist view of Islam is the correct one. The boy begins to develop a religious obsession that goes far beyond ordinary devotion. He studies the Quran all day but is led astray by an overly rigid interpretation, eventually coming to loathe Arabs who do not practice Islam. He harbors a particular hatred for women who live Western-style lives—going unveiled and showing little interest in religion. One of his obsessions becomes his teacher, whom he brands an apostate. He and the Imam frequently speak ill of her, and Ahmed begins to fantasize about exacting revenge on her; he views her as an infidel and a traitor simply because she has fully embraced the Belgian lifestyle and objectively criticizes certain aspects of Islam that she dislikes. Ahmed begins to hatch a plot to kill her and actually attempts to do so, but—fortunately for the woman—his murder attempt fails. Ahmed's mother is devastated, but he is so completely in the grip of religious extremism that he feels no remorse and continues to believe that what he did was right and willed by Allah.
Ahmed persists in his radicalization, continuing to idolize religious martyrs and extreme methods; even during his long stint in a correctional facility, his blind faith does not waver. That changes when he meets a girl with whom he connects well; she is sweet and lovely, but she does not share his religion, which places him in a difficult dilemma: despite his feelings for her, he believes the relationship is wrong because she is not Muslim. The young man grapples with deep inner turmoil yet refuses to abandon his convictions; instead, he feigns moderation and manipulates those around him into believing he has shed his extremist views, all to secure his release and pursue his plans against infidels. The film addresses a highly sensitive subject, illustrating how easily young minds can be manipulated by extremist ideas and showing that the issue is not merely one of religion, but of fanaticism—and the danger it poses to society. It also offers insight into how certain religions harbor distorted views of women, regarding their freedom as an act of betrayal. We have seen similar cases here involving extremists who killed their daughters for refusing to wear the veil or for adopting an Italian lifestyle; the most notorious instance is that of young Saman, murdered by her father, uncle, and mother because she refused to adhere to religious dictates and had an Italian boyfriend. In my view, extremism is wrong, and religion should not interfere with state affairs or with women's rights and lives—as is currently happening in Afghanistan.
