Doctor Strange felt like one of the biggest changes of direction in the MCU. After so many movies about superheroes, aliens, advanced technology and super soldiers, this one introduced magic and a completely different kind of world.
What I enjoyed most was how strange everything felt at first. The movie slowly introduced the idea of magic without making it feel like something completely disconnected from the MCU.
Benedict Cumberbatch was a great choice for Stephen Strange. He played him as someone who was extremely confident in his own abilities, sometimes to the point of being difficult to like. I liked watching that attitude change as he faced things he simply could not explain with his knowledge.
The visuals were probably the biggest highlight. The way buildings folded, streets changed direction and entire environments moved around looked completely different from the usual MCU action. Some of those scenes felt like watching a dream where nothing had to follow the normal rules.
I also liked the training scenes because they gave the movie a different pace. Instead of Strange suddenly becoming an expert, we got to see him struggle with something that required patience and practice. His relationship with the Ancient One also gave those scenes more weight.
Then there was the humor. Strange had a dry way of talking that worked really well, especially when he was dealing with characters who were much more serious about the mystical world. Wong also ended up being one of my favorite supporting characters, and I enjoyed the chemistry between him and Strange.
Mads Mikkelsen brought a more serious presence as Kaecilius, although I thought the movie was more interesting when it focused on Strange's personal journey and the strange world around him. The magical side of the story was what made this movie stand out for me.
What I liked most was the idea that Strange had to learn something very different from what had made him successful before. He had spent his life believing that intelligence and skill could solve almost anything, but this experience forced him to look at the world in a completely different way.
Overall, Doctor Strange was a refreshing addition to the MCU. The story gave us a new kind of superhero, the visuals were fantastic, and Benedict Cumberbatch made Strange interesting even when the character was not exactly easy to like. It also opened the door to a side of the MCU that I was very curious to see more of.
