Willy´s Wonderland es una película de terror y comedia dirigida por Kevin Lewis y protagonizada por Nicolas Cage, pensada inicialmente para estrenarse en 2020, pero debido a las complicaciones por la pandemia de Covid-19 pudo empezar a verse en 2021. La película nos muestra a un personaje del cual no conocemos su nombre, bastante rudo y silente, que es engañado para limpiar un restaurante familiar donde deberá enfrentarse a un grupo de animatrónicos embrujados que intentarán asesinarlo.
Vale destacar que a través de su argumento disparatado, Willy’s Wonderland busca abrazar el cine de bajo presupuesto o serie B más bizarro, donde el terror y la comedia se cruzan constantemente. Y es a través del guión y la dirección donde esta película logra un buen balance entre ambos géneros, donde se construye un clima tenso que acaba resolviéndose de forma estrafalaria y exagerada, filmado y editado de forma dinámica en medio de espacios oscuros y donde intervienen las luces neón para crear una atmósfera idónea. Por otra parte, Nicolas Cage se muestra cada vez más cerca de salir de su mala racha de películas y actuaciones decepcionantes, encarando en esta ocasión a un personaje sin diálogo y al que le imprime suficiente carisma para lograr ser gracioso e intimidante a partes iguales a lo largo de la historia.
A pesar de sus logros y su tono paródico hacia otras películas de terror, Willy’s Wonderland en ocasiones parece no saber distanciarse de los clichés, usándolos de tal forma que se sienten forzados, como es el caso de la toma de decisiones ilógicas por parte de los personajes. Además, la historia puede tener algunos agujeros argumentales o inconsistencias que tal vez no terminen de convencer al espectador al final de la película.
En conclusión, Willy’s Wonderland resulta ser una película ácida y divertida, que posiblemente divida a los espectadores por sus excentricidades y puntos flojos en la narración, pero que sin duda no dejará indiferente a nadie. On the other hand, Nicolas Cage is getting closer and closer to getting out of his bad streak of disappointing films and performances, this time playing a character with no dialogue and enough charisma to be funny and intimidating in equal parts throughout the story.
Despite its achievements and its parodic tone towards other horror films, Willy's Wonderland sometimes seems to not know how to distance itself from cliches, using them in such a way that they feel forced, as in the case of the illogical decisions made by the characters. In addition, the story may have some plot holes or inconsistencies that may not end up convincing the viewer at the end of the film.
